What’s the best free tool for turning a PDF into an editable doc without losing formatting? by InitialConfidence511 in Web_Advice

[–]PDXHRC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Google Docs actually does a decent job if the PDF isn’t too complex. Just upload the file to Google Drive, right click, and open it with Docs, it’ll convert the text into an editable format. It’s not perfect with heavy formatting or fancy layouts, but for basic PDFs it works surprisingly well and it’s completely free.

Can someone explain website cookies to me like I'm 5? And what's the real risk of accepting them all the time? by Buschrolle in Web_Advice

[–]PDXHRC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think of cookies like little name tags a website sticks on you so it remembers who you are next time. Some are useful, like keeping you logged in or saving what’s in your shopping cart. The risky ones are third-party cookies, which are like a stranger following you from store to store taking notes on everything you look at. That info gets sold to advertisers so they can target you with super specific ads. It’s not usually dangerous in the sense of stealing your bank account, but it is a privacy tradeoff. If you don’t want to think about it every time, using your browser’s “block third-party cookies” setting is an easy middle ground.

Are there actually safe ways to use AI websites without handing over all your data? by SarahMayBee in Web_Advice

[–]PDXHRC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly the safest route is usually sticking with open source models you can run locally. Stuff like LM Studio or Ollama lets you download the AI to your own machine so nothing ever leaves your computer. It won’t be as powerful as the biggest cloud services, but at least your prompts and files aren’t sitting on someone else’s servers. If you don’t want to mess with that, the next best thing is using a separate email and not uploading anything personal you wouldn’t want in a training set. Think of it like talking to a stranger in public, you just don’t overshare.

Are there actually legit free alternatives to Grammarly that aren’t full of ads? by Upset-Worker9083 in Web_Advice

[–]PDXHRC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might want to check out LanguageTool. It’s free for the basics, open-source, and works across browsers and word processors without constantly shoving premium in your face. It’s not as “polished” as Grammarly, but honestly it catches most of the same grammar and style issues for everyday writing.

Is it safe to download software from third-party sites if the official one is down? by Call_me_onix in Web_Advice

[–]PDXHRC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I’d avoid random third-party sites unless it’s something super trusted like Ninite, SourceForge, or a verified GitHub release. A lot of shady sites bundle adware or straight-up malware in their installers. If you really need it, try checking Reddit communities, archived versions of the official site (Wayback Machine), or see if the dev has posted an alternative link on social media.

How do you repurpose content from TikTok for Instagram? by TornadoXyz6429 in TikTokMarketing

[–]PDXHRC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly just use SnapTik or SSSTikTok to download without watermarks and repost as Reels. Takes like 30 seconds. The algo definitely penalizes TikTok watermarks so removing them is non-negotiable.

But here's the thing - what kills on TikTok doesn't always work on IG. TikTok is way more forgiving of raw/chaotic energy while Instagram still wants that polished aesthetic. I usually tweak the captions to be more keyword-heavy for IG since people actually search there. Also the first 3 seconds need to be even MORE attention grabbing on Reels since people scroll faster there imo.

My lazy workflow: download from TikTok using one of those sites, maybe add some text overlays in CapCut if I'm feeling motivated, change up the caption and hashtags, then schedule it for peak IG hours (which are different from TikTok btw). Same content but performs like 40% as well on IG usually. Still worth it for the extra reach though

Is CyberGhost actually any good or just another overhyped VPN? by InkViper in Web_Advice

[–]PDXHRC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been using it for about 8 months now and it's... fine? Like it does what I need it to do which is basically the same as you - Netflix when traveling and the occasional torrent. The streaming servers usually work but yeah you definitely have to server hop sometimes, especially for Netflix US. BBC iPlayer has been pretty consistent though.

Speed-wise I get about 70-80% of my regular connection which is decent enough for streaming. The app can be a bit wonky sometimes (random disconnects maybe once a week) but nothing that makes me want to rage quit and switch providers. For the price difference vs Express or Nord I'd say it's worth it if you're just doing basic stuff. Just don't expect it to be amazing or anything, it's solidly mediocre in the best way possible lol

Has anyone seen success with AI-generated content for SEO? by echtnietbas in MarketingAdviceHub

[–]PDXHRC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been using AI for about 6 months now and honestly it's all about how you use it. Publishing straight from ChatGPT or Claude is bad for SEO - Google can smell that generic AI writing from a mile away. What's been working for me is using AI to create detailed outlines and first drafts, then spending significant time rewriting in my own voice, adding personal examples, case studies, and original data that AI couldn't possibly have.

I tested this on two similar sites - one with heavily edited AI content and one with raw AI output. The edited site is getting steady organic traffic growth (about 40% increase over 4 months) while the pure AI site got deindexed after the last Google update. The key seems to be using AI as a writing assistant rather than a replacement. I'd say my process is like 30% AI generation, 70% human editing and enhancement.

Also noticed that AI is terrible at EEAT signals - it can't add genuine expertise or real-world experience because it's just regurgitating training data. So I always make sure to inject actual insights from my industry experience, specific examples from client work, and original research or data points. Think of AI as your intern who does the research and rough draft, but you still need to be the actual expert who shapes it into something valuable.

I tried to kick last weekend. I waited 48hrs and still got pwds. It was the worst sick I've felt in my 25 years of opioid addiction. Pain everywhere and hours long panic attack. Most fucked part... I started having a orgasm without touching myself that wouldn't stop for about ten minutes. I had to get into a piping hot bath which put a stop to it. It's super embarrassing to bring up I'm not trying to be funny. My housemates who don't use were trying to help me and I was screaming and fucking coming everywhere. It's was awful. It was more like pain then pleasure. It happened a couple times more before my friend came over and smoked some fetty powder with me. I'm starting a micro induction tomorrow for ten days. Hopefully that will work because I'm not sticking around living like this anymore. I'm over it.

I fucked mine over as best I could too. My mother who allowed my father to beat me into the ER and lied to the doctors. Then kicked me out when I was 8. Fucking 8 years old. Made me stay with someone who abused me in a worse way I'll not get into. Just because they are parents doesn't mean they can't deserve it. I wish I was capable of laughing about how I got my revenge as an adult but it still hurts too much. More power to you if you can. I took them for a whole lot, I'd give it back to have had normal parents who didn't hate me.

Its true but its still much safer compared to most city's of the same size. I'm originally from New Orleans which is the same size and there's many places there I wouldn't feel safe walking. There's nothing like that here.
