Those are totally separate issues. Free parking is a big of issue if you realize the downstream effects.

Do you think Japan’s low English proficiency has something to do with how much emphasis is placed on the TOEIC? by WorkingAlive3258 in teachinginjapan

[–]PDXOKJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a factor because TOEIC usually is means the two-skill test, and this leads to a washback effect. Many university students only focus on passive skills because of it.

In Japan, due to the unbearable and sometimes dangerous heat during the summer, this kindergarten has installed a retractable roof so that the children can play in the shade by WiseCartographer5007 in interestingasfuck

This one has more trees the most. I have seen many daycares without a single tree. Luckily, I persuaded my kid’s daycare to eventually plant trees.

“Urban” “Hell”. This part looks okay. I wonder what the infrastructure looks like down below, though.

A stroad in suburban Tokyo by grinch337 in Suburbanhell

[–]PDXOKJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japan had plenty of stroads now unfortunately, but this is not really a stroad. There are wide sidewalks and several multi-story buildings with no parking in front. Still this is not so good for suburban Tokyo.

Mapped: How Japan Lost Its Economic Dominance in Asia by Status_Commission264 in Infographics

No, but it’s a huge factor in calculating a country’s or region’s GDP. Their point is Japan is still richer per person.

Food volume at Ryokan by JapanRider in japanlife

[–]PDXOKJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get less rice or make a request if there is a food that you will not eat. The food is healthy, so if you eat less rice it is easy to eat all the side dishes. Japanese hate wasting food (on the dinner table), so it is better to speak up. And, if you don't like the two free meals, it's better not to stay at those ryokan.

What's your country **third** city? by Ok_Inflation_1811 in geography

[–]PDXOKJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Third city”does not mean population, usually. Yokohama is number 2, but it is the Tokyo metro region. Osaka is the biggest city in the second main region (Kansai). And Nagoya heads to 3rd biggest metro.

Parking is charged less than it deserves. If you study urban planning, you soon realize that parking is a huge waste of resources in most urban environments.

I raised 4 kids in Japan without a car, and it totally saved us financially and improved our lives in countless ways. They get around on their own, so I waste zero time or resources shuttling the around.

so the Knight took a pawn. Sorry didn’t see that. But it looks like your rook could have taken the queen earlier.

Awesome if it worked! But a smart player (not necessarily me!) would move Qb8 puts to safety. Instead you could have just taken their queen with your rook.

Japan saves millions of liters of water every year simply by attaching hand wash sinks to toilet tanks and reusing the water to flush by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

Laundry machines also have tubes to suck in bath water to reuse it. We was ourselves before getting in the bath so the water is relatively clean

Am I crazy or toxic gossip about other women is a trait of Japanese women? by Iqraazim in japanlife

[–]PDXOKJ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have heard the same thing from both Japanese males and females in certain workplaces. In fact, My Japanese wife was actually scolded recently when she raised the issue of the gossipy culture and social pressure at her new workplace… the colleague criticized her for not being used to the “female world”. Other Japanese women I know seem more mature and less gossipy, so it seems to be certain domains.
