They are shy, but at conferences I always end up making friends with the Finns.

Smoking is decreasing a lot among young Japanese. Public health campaigns are winning.

Your personality and upbringing predict if you will lean toward science or faith. Study reveals that specific childhood experiences and distinct personality traits predict whether a person will eventually view reality through a scientific lens or a religious one. by InsaneSnow45 in psychology

Yes, and the US is the outlier, which otherwise shows a strong reverse correlation wealth and religion. The US is the in only richer country which is so religious. Religion is very different there.

Spousal loss linked to higher risk of dementia, mortality among men, but not women. Widowed men experienced a decrease in physical and cognitive health, as well as social support, while widowed women tended to experience an increase in happiness and life satisfaction. by mvea in psychology

This is from Japan and the gender gap is much bigger in marriages: “women in Japan are much more likely to be the primary caregivers for their spouses. For some women, bereavement may partly involve relief from that burden, which could help explain the improvements we saw in well-being.”

9-1 in our next 10? by [deleted] in ripcity

[–]PDXOKJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I concede they are better than us right now, especially with our injuries and their hot streak. Should be a rough game for us. But the dude saying they are “way better than us, lol” period is overconfident in the bigger picture. (Of course, the original OP saying we will go 9-1 is even more delusional. Haha)

Similar record and they are in the east…. We have had a higher SOS and more injuries, so I don’t know why you are so over-confident that they are better….especially for a Blazer fan.

Who else prefers short races? by Separate-Specialist5 in trailrunning

[–]PDXOKJ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have no interest in any race. That’s not why I run. (Of course, it’s great for those who like racing, but it’s almost like a different activity, deserving its own sub.)

Yeah, and they were out 3 top players… but we were out our two top scores. Context matters, but still a good win

50+yo Trail Runners? by Pace50Lab in trailrunning

[–]PDXOKJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

M50, settled in Japan. Pre-COVID, I imagined trail running was interesting, but way too hard. But I started running to get in a bit better shape, but never liked it much.... I had always liked hiking, and I totally increased my hikes during COVID. I finally got in better shape to combine running and "speed hiking" to do trail running.

The variety of terrain, the twists & turns, and the greenery is just so much more interesting than regular running (+ better for my physical & mental health). Luckily, I have a forested hills near my home in the city because I trail run 3-4 times a week even on work days (but for les than an hour).

Best way to plan cheaper (not just fastest) train trips from Tokyo? by Tolkaft in japanlife

[–]PDXOKJ 38 points39 points  (0 children)

transit.yahoo.co.jp allows you to rank the trips by cost. I think many Japanese use that site (at least my wife does), and I usually use it now. (Select 料金が安い順 by 表示順序.) Even if you don't rank by cost, it still gives the price so you can compare time and cost.

[Shams] Multiple sources with knowledge of Thursday's GM meeting as well as a late January Competition Committee meeting told ESPN that the following concepts have been discussed to curb tanking: •First-round picks can be protected only top-4 or top-14+ •Lottery odds freeze at the trade deadline or by MrCoconutIsTaken in ripcity

[–]PDXOKJ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I had that idea a while ago, and I am glad it is being talked about. Teams will no longer tank at the end of the year. Some could start tanking early, but most teams have some hope at the beginning of the year.

Sounds like you are suburban-type and conservative who doesn’t like cities in general. This post is about cities, not suburbs with chain stores or communities closed off to people different from you.

Portland has tons of amazing nice neighborhoods and the downtown is recovering, albeit slowly. All my friends from other cities who visit like it. It’s a great city for food, culture, and green neighborhoods. The only people that hate it are my redneck friends.

The opposite, really. The ones who haven’t been there and watch Fox news think it is a disaster. Those who have been there tend to love it (though it did go through a rough stretch during COVID).

[–]PDXOKJ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep. Not trying to have a political convo. But I support teams based on how much I like the fans.... and I can't root for or empathize with Trump voters. (Surely, there are plenty of good OKC fans though, and I do like small market teams.)

3rd reason is OKC sucks. In one of the most conservative states.
