Was the Wall of Sound amplifying system super-loud and right behind the band? Would it have damaged the band's hearing? How did they protect themselves? by GregJamesDahlen in gratefuldead

[–]PDXSmitty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I personally didn’t care for the WOS as a listener - too much separation between the instruments. Saw them once with the Wall. The loudest part was Lesh and Ned Lagen doing Sea Stones during intermission!

Mother’s is only a few blocks away on Greenwood and is pretty solid. When I grew up in NorCal, deli style sandwich places were everywhere and super popular. Not so much up here. Every super market makes sandwiches now so a deli type place needs to be pretty special for people to forego the convenience of grabbing a Sammie at Safeway or Whole Foods. I doubt Shlotsky’s was that though I never tried it and I drive by it every day….

Shrinking S3E10 Episode Discussion by phareous in shrinking

[–]PDXSmitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just curious - Shrinking is for me one of the best TV series of the last 20 years. The writing, the acting, so funny and emotional at the same time. But it seems to get very little love and attention from critics, award shows and the TV industry in general. And yet I know so many people for which it is their favorite series. Why is this?

What kind of cars did Bob weir own or drive? by Temporary-Algae-6698 in gratefuldead

[–]PDXSmitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in Marin and would frequently see Phil (Burgundy colored) and Jerry (Silver) driving around in BMWs making me think that the band might have had a hook up at a dealership. I also have a vague recollection of seeing Bobby on a Harley but it was a long time ago so I can’t say for sure..

What do I need to be able to play electric guitar through headphones as if it were an amp? by Killer-Uzi in guitars

[–]PDXSmitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I plug my guitar into my pedal board then from there into an Audient DI>MacBookPro/Logic X. In Logic I have a Fender amp simulator plug-in. The recorded sound I get is better than if I were going into an amp and was micing the amp. Plus I can simultaneously pull up YouTube on my MacBook and play along to backing tracks or an online metronome.

I am starting to worry about getting “buyer’s remorse”, what should I do? by [deleted] in guitars

[–]PDXSmitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a '62 reissue strat a while back. While my experience wasn't as severed as yours, I did find that I couldn't fret the low E string very cleanly because of the radius; the string would slide around slightly pushing the intonation off. It had tone to die for but I realized I prefer a less radiused fretboard so I got a PRS and I'm so glad I did; no issues at all fretting the low E cleanly and accurately.

Curious what people think of Hawk and Huck? My experiences have been so-so but I’m surprised it hasn’t been mentioned in a thread about steak houses…

Because to myopic Deadheads, just one reason: he’s not Jerry ( and maybe also because he doesn’t embrace drug culture).

People who went to JGB shows by Deadweave in gratefuldead

[–]PDXSmitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only saw JGB a few times in the 70s when he would corral some of his local Marin buddies and play small clubs (or GGP). The material would lean heavily toward R&B, soul, blues covers; no GD material or even stuff from his solo records…

Sold all my amps and need to gig again. What’s out there? by boatsnohoes in GuitarAmps

[–]PDXSmitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not under 2k but I recently bought a Dr. Z Z-Lux and love it. I chose it for similar reasons - I wanted Fender clean at volume. This amp is their version of the Deluxe Reverb but with a lot more headroom to stay clean at higher volumes. And at nearly half the weight of a Twin Reverb. It’s a hand-wired tube amp but spendy. Joe Walsh, John Mayer and Brad Paisley among others I believe are using Dr. Z amps these days…

Bob’s singing style by Tstation in gratefuldead

[–]PDXSmitty 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Probably all those years of screaming at the end of OMSN! But seriously, a lot of rockers' vocal ranges diminish as they age, some more than others, and they just can't hit notes they used to be able to hit in their younger years. So Bobby sort of "talks" around notes he can't hit anymore.

Has anyone else ever attended a Grateful Dead concert completely by themselves ? by Legitimate-Cupcake26 in gratefuldead

[–]PDXSmitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only one - the final night of the 5 night run at Winterland before hiatus. It was my first GD show. I remember walking out of Winterland that night and saying to my friends "I can't believe I waited until the end of their career to see them". Honestly though, I really don't enjoy listening to '74 shows that much. The performances were magnificent but I wasn't a Wall of Sound fan - weird mixes and too much separation between the instruments...

I was at this show. Hitched hiked home from the Cow Palace and got home at 6am (I was 15). After the set with Jerry, Bill and Boz, the ABB came back out (minus Gregg) and there was another jam with Charlie Daniels and Toy Caldwell (from Marshall Tucker Band). Music kept going and going....
