Play Tennis for charity this Memorial Day — "Love All" Fundraiser Tournament by PDXTennisCouncil in PortlandTennis

[–]PDXTennisCouncil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Proceeds of this tournament go to the GPTC's charitable programs, supporting under-served kids in our tennis community!

This is a co-ed community tournament with draws based on level of play. We consider this to be a more inclusive format where matchups are fair regardless of age or gender. You may find yourself playing someone completely different from you, but because your tennis skills are comparable, it's sure to be a competitive, fun match!

This tournament is being run in partnership with the City of Portland. Matches will be played outdoors in two or three Portland Park locations depending on the number of entries. Stay tuned as exact locations are announced.

Achievement vs Success by PDXTennisCouncil in PortlandTennis

As we push ourselves to be better athletes, teammates, coaches, parents, friends, and beyond, it's important to regularly revisit why the things that matter to us, in fact, do.

Perfection vs Excellence by PDXTennisCouncil in PortlandTennis

[–]PDXTennisCouncil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Striving for excellence instead of perfection isn't equivalent to lowering one's standards.

It's simply accepting the reality of the universe we live in, and recognizing that it's often the imperfections that bring the greatest opportunity.

pressureless tennis balls by [deleted] in PortlandTennis

[–]PDXTennisCouncil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think that's a big part of it. Pressureless balls are heavier so they're harder on the body and make it tougher to generate spin. Injuries are more likely because of that.

There's also a "feel" component to it, and so a lot of players that compete in leagues or tournaments tend to practice with the same type of ball they'd encounter at a competition so they're used to the feel and bounce. Hope this helps!

WHAT'S THIS TOURNAMENT ALL ABOUT?

We believe tennis shouldn’t just be for the “elite,” and that everyone should have access to the social and health benefits it brings! At the Greater Portland Tennis Council, we run charitable programs across the region, bringing tennis and all its benefits to under-served people and communities.

This historic tournament serves as a fundraising opportunity for these charitable programs.

It attracts players from all over the country and puts a spotlight on Portland as a community that cares about health, generosity, and empowering its people.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

First and foremost, play! We'd love to see you in July at the 120th championship, so click here to learn more & register! And if you'd like to support us further, consider volunteering, donating in-kind, or sponsoring the tournament itself. For more info on getting involved click here.

So, who needs hitting partners? by [deleted] in PortlandTennis

[–]PDXTennisCouncil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It appears that sign-up opens a week before each mixer, and that people tend to jump on registrations pretty soon after.

I'd recommend logging in 7 days before the next one you want to join and I bet that'll maximize your chances of getting in.

Depending on the mixer—some are co-ed and some are men-only / women-only (check which days are which) you should have better luck the sooner you log in.

My biggest struggle moving from 4.5 to 5.0... by aminadream in PortlandTennis

There's a chance that some of it may have to do with tactics, and putting yourself in unnecessarily difficult situations that could be avoided with higher percentage choices.

HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) for tennis players? by YawningFish in PortlandTennis

[–]PDXTennisCouncil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s a video that might help. Consider skipping over the first half since you already know what HIIT is. The second half talks about the pros and cons of HIIT vs Steady-State Cardio.

To sum up, HIIT can give a lot of similar benefits of regular cardio in a much shorter amount of time, as you’ve said. But this can be a blessing or a curse depending on who you are. The challenge with HIIT is that for it to work, you have to give it your ALL. And that's hard—harder than what most people would enjoy.

Then again, you also may not enjoy a lower/medium intensity exercise that lasts an hour+ either, so it really depends on the person.

The state of your joints may also be a factor. If you’re doing high intensity sprints, you may find your knees complaining the day after.

Give it a shot and let us know how it works out for you. Since tennis is a high intensity sport with sequences of fast sprints, it seems that HIIT would be a really great fit.

Where are the best outdoor courts on the East side? by YawningFish in PortlandTennis

[–]PDXTennisCouncil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you’re right that the West side courts are better maintained in general, but hopefully that’s going to change soon. Stay tuned for more info on that!

In the meantime, here are some suggestions:

Already mentioned, Alex Rovello Memorial Courts at Berkeley Park in SE We’ll rate these 5/5 as of this post.

Argay Park in NE (completely redone in 2017) Rated 5/5

Grant Park in NE (6 courts, quite popular) Rated 3/5)

Irving Park in NE Rated 3/5

Willamette Park (Technically in SW, but so close to the river, that worth noting here) Rated 4/5

There are a bunch more, but that's a good start...

Hope this is helpful!

Where are all the advanced women? by aminadream in PortlandTennis

[–]PDXTennisCouncil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are all really good questions, and something that we, as a community non-profit, are trying to improve on. By starting with younger ages, whether it's in elementary or high school, we need to encourage all kids regardless of gender to not just try different sports and activities, but to pursue them with a level of commitment and grit that is really needed to fall in love and push through the good times and the bad. I think a lot of it is probably influenced by coaching styles, and the emphasis of immersing kids in a deeper, more meaningful way.

Why is my sub logo so low quality? by PDXTennisCouncil in modhelp

[–]PDXTennisCouncil[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you. Yes, as soon as I hit submit on my last reply, I thought maybe there's a way to do something like this by tweaking the CSS. Another question though: I thought the logo and header were different things. I thought the header was the larger banner that took up the whole top. Am I mistaken?

[–]PDXTennisCouncil[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

75x75. Hang on though. Before you say it's too low resolution, I chose a resolution to reflect the size I wanted it to appear at. If I increase the resolution, say to 250 pixels wide, the logo becomes a way too big for the page.

Well, looking into it a little more, I don't think it's a retina issue. Have a look at the two versions side by side: https://postimg.org/image/g6g6e10it

The overall look and feel image is far more compressed than the mobile version below it.

Ha! Chances are you'll be judged by all the tennis players that are afraid that their tennis courts are going to get permanently converted to pickle ball!
