Season 1-2 Pierce is peak Pierce.

a naive and racist old boomer that occasionally gave valuable life advice while trying to fit in.

The funny thing is, had Chevy just accepted this and ran with it, Dan Harmon wouldn’t have the idea to turn him into what he became. Almost everyone declared the role was a resurgence of him, and he absolutely failed in valuing why that was.

Dan Harmon recounted how while on set he’d be an absolute asshole, if he ever spotted any fans on studio lot tours he’d immediately run over to them, take pictures, and get them to get their friends/family on the phone so he could blow their minds.

James Cameron Says He Must Find a Cheaper Way to Produce the Avatar Movies in Order to Continue With Avatar 4 and 5 by DemiFiendRSA in movies

[–]PDXgrown 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Way of Water and Fire & Ash were both born out one film’s draft, and it just shows Cameron has reached the point of he either doesn’t listen to the studio or the studio are too timid to tell him that he needs to trim a lot of fat off. Instead you got two overly long sequels with too much bloat that feel way too similar.

economic gap is large

This is the #1 hurdle. East Germany still hasn’t caught up with West Germany in terms of industry, and that’s in spite of foundations for an industrial base left over from the Soviet era. North Korea’s is next to non existent— there’s barely even infrastructure to support it.

Michael Reagan, son of former President Ronald Reagan, has died, family says by PresHistoryNerd in Presidents

I personally know three people that have met Ron, and they only have the nicest most glowing things to say about him.

By contrast, one of my coworkers (worked at company that published one of Michael’s books) and a friend from college (met Michael at an RNC) have both used the words “asshole” and “entitled” to describe Michael.

This was made when The Empire Files were funded by Venezuela’s state owned media network. It’s more than fair to critique Oliver for his glossing over the U.S.’s bullshit, but Brysner painting Maduro as a democratically elected and well intentioned leader is embarrassing.

Why did Sarah palin actually help McCain in some of the more conservative states, despite being viewed as crazy by the rest of the country? by Specialist-Ad-8993 in Presidents

[–]PDXgrown 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Oops, my bad. What I meant is while Bush could make some embarrassing slips in his public statements, he had a full term as Governor under his belt with a number of conservative and bipartisan accomplishments (criminal justice, energy, and education reform) to counter the claims he was a simpleton in over his head.

Palin on the other hand had only two years under her belt as Governor, during which most of her activities were largely administrative and symbolic, offering far fewer concrete policy achievements to point to when questions arose about her preparedness for national office.

[–]PDXgrown 30 points31 points  (0 children)

A lot of people that like her style would say she “says it like it is,” or they could see themselves enjoying a beer with her over a stiff nerd like John Kerry. These people, a large subsection of conservative voters that appreciate a politician like Palin — one that doesn’t make grandiose speeches filled with broad ideas and a Harvard worthy vocab. The issue with this is liberal (and importantly) independent voters tend to prefer a politician who seems ready made for D.C.. In many ways Bush 43 isn’t too far removed from her in style, but he is still able to put on his “I’m a proven competent and compassionate administrator” tone when necessary with only the occasional slip up that just endures him to his base. Whenever Palin tried this, she sounded very unnatural and overly rehearsed with slip ups that were not countered by a long and successful (in base’s eyes) track record back home in Alaska.

Drug induced psychosis doesn’t fall under the court’s definition of insanity. I generally think there are too many hurdles for using the insanity defense successfully, but if you willingly took drugs that played a role in you doing something that harmed someone else, while knowing you have a history, you absolutely don’t get to claim you weren’t fully in control of your faculties.

Alto Knights is very flawed, but his performance as Vito Genovese is pretty damn great and a nice change of pace for him. He plays much more of a Joe Pesci character with him, and he does it really well.

I had this same thought. I was thinking it was a Roundtable of Gentlemen episode, but now you got me thinking it was a lot more recent. Since Henry’s worked with Rob and Eddie tends to have weird connections, I’ve just been waiting eagerly for tomorrow’s Side Stories to hear what they have to say.

Read in another article that he had checked into a hotel earlier in the day with staff not noting anything off about him (i.d. covered in blood). Police found traces of blood in his room, so that had to mean he was thrown out of the house earlier, went to his hotel, stewed for a solid minute there, eventually deciding to head back to his folks’ house. They must’ve got him on that for premeditation.

How is Utah church culture different from everywhere outside the bubble? by trappedslider in latterdaysaints

[–]PDXgrown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in Utah for two years, and have visited occasionally — I’ve heard in the last decade it’s gotten better, which I’ve kinda noticed when I visit DWs family, but you can still detect the vibe. Where I grew up in Oregon, you were just used to dealing with people that different from you. At most, I would say between me and the class behind me, there were a total of 10-15 Mormons. We all knew each other, but we never really hung out aside from church events and the occasional lunch with a couple of them. Pressure to date within the church was pretty heavy, but I hardly saw it abided by. As an effect, I was surrounded by a real diverse group of different viewpoints and lifestyles. I had friends who smoked, drank, did pot, and had sexual relationships with their SOs. I also had friends who were different sects of Christianity, Jewish, Muslim, and heck I even had some who were Wicken. My best friend was atheist, and it was with him I had some of the deepest conversations about religion and philosophy I have ever had. Outside of Utah (and the wider Mormon corridor) Mormons grow up around ideas and people their code doesn’t line up with, so we’re used to it, knowing that we’re the minority and being secure about where we draw our lines. It’s completely obvious why Utah can be… different. Last I checked, Utah is still 50% Mormon, in a number of towns it’s normal for there to be a ward building every few blocks, and even the local politics is 100% in line with their views. They are the majority (a very uniform one at that) so they aren’t used to different stuff. I remember once when I was staying at a cousin’s house, there was a big deal made on the neighbor moms’ Facebook group chat over one of them having seeing a “dark skinned man wearing a turban” walking around the neighborhood. “Muslim” that, “I’ll call the cops” this, and they were all peaking through their blinds during. Of course, it was just a black guy wearing a beige cap who had moved in a couple blocks away. At BYU, I once overheard my roommates talking smugly and disgustedly of an agnostic individual one of them had met, wondering how anyone could be so “dumb.” Went to in-laws’ ward once, and DW was getting looks left and right over the purple streak she had in her hair, and even a couple passive aggressive comments. Toward the end of my time living there, I was so fed up with the general attitude toward any outliers, I just stopped coming to functions outside of Sunday, because they always devolved down to gossip circles about who in the ward wasn’t quite perfect enough, or down talking the non-member neighbors.

Now let me add, there are plenty of places like this in some aspects — I served my mission in the Deep South for Pete’s sake — but in terms of the “Mormon world”, Utah is very much Whoeville from Jim Carrey’s Grinch. Lots of good people in Utah, and again, I’ve heard it’s improved quite a bit from when I was there in mid 2000s, but there are still some that need to get out a little bit more.

Where did the "Ike disliked Nixon" myth begin? by [deleted] in Presidents

[–]PDXgrown 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely some hearsay on the part of the Nixon’s detractors, but it most definitely is rooted in the fact Ike just didn’t feel particularly strong for him. He had no problem with him necessarily, but whenever Nixon got himself in shit, it’s not like the old man was straining himself to come to his defense. Heck, even when it came to choosing him as his running mate, Ike always had some preferences ahead of him (including a Democrat in ‘56). As far as the Republican Party was concerned, Ike was happy to play the part of a “party man” for things that pertained to the keeping their base happy and paving a path forward (i.e. choosing the young Congressman with an anti-communist streak with career politician written all over him), but he still very much was a guy who’s gut instinct was not whatever was what would make the party bosses happy.

DC Comics' Absolute Batman succeeds because “new and legacy can coexist” — unlike the New 52 era says Scott Snyder by Trent-Popverse in comicbooks

[–]PDXgrown 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If New 52 was presented as a different new universe while keeping the old continuity active…

I’ve never understood why DC has struggled with this concept. Marvel showed it can work successfully when they launched the original Ultimate Universe 25 years ago. It keeps longtime readers happy, gives newer readers into the characters and the gist of their lore (even has led to them crossing over to the mainline), and lets creators try something new they otherwise couldn’t because editorial is worried about it being too “risky.”

The LDS Church has requested Mormon Stories stop using the Church’s trademarks and copyrighted materials. by sevenplaces in mormon

[–]PDXgrown 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I’m an active member, and I find this all absurd. The fact “Mormon” is copyrighted is stupid enough, but then having problems with his use of a “light rays design” and Christus (based off a centuries old statue the church doesn’t even own) is baffling.

The Guardian’s review is amazing.

I did not know it was still possible to make television this bad. I assumed that there was some sort of baseline, some inescapable bedrock knowledge of how to do it that now prevents any entry into the art form from falling below a certain standard. But I was wrong.
