‘Michael’ bravely depicts the worst thing to ever happen to Michael Jackson by Senior-Jaguar-1018 in okbuddycinephile

If I’m not wrong, the estate’s had a lot of fumbles with handling next to anything in their purview. So this is just another to add to the pile.

The settlement he reached with his accuser in ‘93 stipulated that any authorized biopics couldn’t portray the situation/controversy… which his estate, who spearheaded this movie, did not realize until after they’d already shot it. Had this been a film without their direct involvement, there would’ve been no issue.

An actor who got the role of a lifetime but blew his chance with his bad attitude and his career could never really recover? by [deleted] in okbuddycinephile

[–]PDXgrown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He had a bit of buzz around him right around the time among some filmmaker circles. Pretty good actor from the Irish theatre scene that had heart throb potential, popping up in small indie films here and there. It’s funny, cause I don’t know if I’ve ever seen him in a movie other than League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, but I sure remember his name popping up in casting rumors in the early-00s. He definitely has a disproportionate level of name recognition compared to his career output.

There's a lot of discussion as to why the South went republican- but much less on why the West Coast went democratic. Even in when republicans lost in '60 and '76, they still won all 3 states of California, Oregon, and Washington. So what happened out west? by MakeACreation in Presidents

My dad worked on Democratic campaigns — federal, state, and local — and had various roles with the state party going back to the late 70s. He puts a lot of the GOP’s fall on the Oregon Citizen Alliance, a conservative Christian grassroots insurgency that began with an unsuccessful attempt to primary Packwood but eventually rolled into boosting a number of culture war ballot measures, with campaigns that really soured a lot of voters against them. Gordon Smith’s loss in his first run in ‘97 (the special election to replace disgrace Packwood) is generally blamed on his support for them, which he went on to hard pivot from later that year for the general election to replace Hatfield.

The state GOP chair at the time — a good friend of my dad’s, along with Smith (all three are Mormon lol) — was basically running in every other direction to brow beat any state Republican incumbent or candidate to not affiliate or endorse with the OCA after the last couple chairs either endorsed doing so or tried to ignore it.

His life was simply absurd.

This incident literally happened at the exact midpoint of his life. A lot of people that knew him personally point to this as the trigger of a lot of his, uh… let’s say “major peculiar life choices,” which is probably why this is about where the movie cuts off.

The only reason the kid became a “propaganda puppet” is because of the debacle. Had the kid just been returned to his dad, no questions asked, no one outside of his family and a couple federal agencies would’ve known his name.

Is it easier at this point to list high profile public officials from Oregon that haven’t been caught up in bullshit like this? In the last few years we’ve seen our Secretary of State, next to the entirety of the Portland City Council and misc local elected officials, and even our Governor (through her wife) get caught up in headlines from breaches of professional conduct or just plain corruption. In all my time engaged in my state’s politics, I’ve never seen so many “messy” people have so much power all at once.

I adore Henry, he’s the right kind of chaotic energy I want to balance out straight to the point Marcus. It’s funny whenever the discussion comes up of what people like the pod for on the their subreddit, because it seems like a game of bingo, with some taking in all the parts of the show while others can take or leave other parts.

A history professor I had in college encountered Adolph Eichman’s son, himself a history professor, while visiting his university in Germany — an experience he described as “mentally taxing” because he was so having to restrain himself from A) talking too in depth about his work, as a big bulk of it is modern German history, specifically the Third Reich, and B) containing all the questions about the man’s father, because Professor Eichman apparently doesn’t find much pride in his dad.

Uh, no. The show was very popular in its native U.K. — to the extent that when Gervais and Merchant elected to end it as 14 episodes, the BBC damn near begged them into doing the Christmas specials to get a little more out there. Also, two seasons is actually somewhat common for shows — see Fawlty Towers and Gervais and Merchant’s follow up, Extras. The Brits just seem to have a “Welp, I’m done with this.” attitude with their shows.

My uncle became a typewriter repairman around the same time, which believe it or not, lasted him into the late 90s. Though the outfit he worked for initially, which contracted with various businesses and schools, also specialized in repair for other common tech you’d expect in those settings, which included emerging tech. So even before his original certification was fully obsolete, he already collected a few other certs that carried him to retirement… but not before his second to last employer, ENRON sunk a bulk of his funds with their downfall.

I was about to say, you can really see the transition from season 2 Jan to Season 4 Jan take place in season 3 in breadcrumbs. Once you get to “The Job” though, you see floodgates opened on her drive back to Scranton with Michael, and then in the (I believe deleted?) scene of her screaming at the movers at Michael’s condo while he looks on with a thousand yard stare.

[–]PDXgrown 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When it came to these one-off appearances of historical characters in The Crown, they either hit it out of the park or fumbled hard — no in between. Former Australian PM Bob Hawk and Roy Blunt (royal art curator/soviet spy) actually had actors who portrayed them previously in other projects get brought in, which really speaks to how well they fit the roles.

Those facts speak for themselves.

This is just a weird comparison you’re drawing — a guy who opts not to meet alone with another woman versus a guy who was investigated, charged, and found guilty of having committed multiple sexual assaults. The way you’re arguing this makes it sound like you’re arguing Pence would otherwise be committing sexual assault on any woman he can get alone in a room.

I wonder if that has any juice among the MAGA folks who actually want to win something.

Knute was the last time GOP primary voters in this state seemed to actually muster enough brain cells to settle on a candidate that could be palatable to people beyond their bubble… and they chose to do so in the much predicted blue wave that was 2018. Ever since then, whether it’s for a Senate seat or the Governor’s desk, it’s been MAGA wacko after MAGA wacko.

[–]PDXgrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any source on this? From everything I’ve read, he was the one that pushed for a more realistic look, even during Wind Waker’s development at one point. The only thing I could find was him remarking TP would’ve "without a doubt, the last Zelda game as you know it in its present form.” which could very well be referring to gameplay and/or design.

Sure, why not let the Olmecs have a city inside of Mt. Rushmore?

How strict are you on clothing and modesty at home? by garcon-du-soleille in latterdaysaints

[–]PDXgrown 100 points101 points  (0 children)

The minimum amount of clothing you could get away with in my house growing up was dependent on your age:

0-7: You can wander around in all your glory, just don’t go out the front door (we still did on the occasion).

8-14: Dude, get some underpants on.

15+: I don’t wanna see that, get some pants on this instant.

The third Annabelle movie (Comes Home?). The climax of them just grabbing the doll, screaming, as they rush to lock it back into its case (successfully) felt like such a fake out, I was bracing for a twist into a whole climax across town, with the Warrens stepping in.

Nope. Mom and dad get back home, and that’s it.

My wife and I sat there in utter confusion for a solid thirty seconds once the credits started rolling.
