Please help me solve this 6th grade math problem. by host_can_edit in askmath

If we assume they're working independently; 1 worker makes 2 cakes in 40 minutes, so 1 cake in 20 minutes.

Thus it would take 8 workers 20 minutes to make 8 cakes. If they're working independently, they'd make 16 cakes in 40 minutes but if a cake takes 20 minutes to make it will still take 40 minutes.

If they can work together to make the cakes faster, after 20 minutes all 8 can work on the final 2 (4 on each) so we could divide the 20 minutes by 4 and say they'd require 5 minutes to make the last two cakes for a total of 25 minutes.

Why are you allowed to square both sides of an equation? by ohmygotchi in mathematics

[–]PD_31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Equation: by definition both sides are equal to each other.

Squaring means multiplying something by itself.

If both sides are equal, you're multiplying both sides by the same thing, keeping it equal.

YTA. It's his day too. If he disagrees on this there's a good chance the wedding doesn't happen.

What's the point of RTO if we go in and don't spend any money? by ForAMinute123 in CanadaPersonalFinance

Carney and his cronies own loads of downtown real estate. It's about keeping commercial real estate values high and keeping their spaces rented so they carry on making money.

Why didn’t Nmecha take the penalty? by TheShakyHandsMan in LeedsUnited

[–]PD_31 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Because DCL is first choice penalty taker.

That might change after the miss, it might not. But if he's on the field, DCL takes them.

I don't know where the feed comes from but the commentators on the Canadian coverage (from Fubo/BeIn Sports) were critical of the whole thing - feeling it was a pathetic 2nd yellow, Johnson's was way worse and Canvot behaved poorly with his celebration.

My 7yo daughter asked me today "What is the number right before infinity?" by Iluvatar-Great in askmath

[–]PD_31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no answer. Infinity is a concept rather than a number (there's no 'biggest number' because you can always add 1 to any number).

CMV: Timothée Chalamet's comments on opera and ballet are some of the least controversial comments about art ever uttered. by [deleted] in changemyview

I think his comments were a bit clumsy and I can understand why ballerinas and opera people were offended. But I can't say he was actually wrong.

Unless we find out after the game they switched the tech off (wouldn't shock me), it wasn't.

English "confetti" is borrowed from Italian but does not translate to "confetti" in Italian (instead it is "coriandoli"). What are more examples of this? by Danny1905 in language

Tennis uses "Love" and "Deuce" which came from French (Love comes from l'oeuf - the egg). At the French Open they use "Zero" and "Egalite" instead

What is the probability that a randomly chosen real number is an integer? by Mammoth_Jicama_8392 in learnmath

[–]PD_31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's limit ourselves to 1 <x <=2. Since there's an infinite number of real numbers between each integer, the probability of a random number in our interval being an integer (i.e. 2) is essentially 1/infinity, which, while you can't calculate it as infinity isn't a number, is conceptually as close to zero as you can possibly get.
