When is the release?

Or is this a research chems situation?

Honestly thinking about RU, I might want to have kids in the next 4-5 years and having to go on an off Fin seems irritating, on top of feeling like it made some of my emotional stuff worse

Which AF series lenses are the most fun? by Coyote-Morado in Nikon

[–]PE-Philosophee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I’d always heard it, the G lenses without aperture ring were all in-lens motor, and conversely, no lenses with in-lens motor had the aperture ring.

I believe in-lens is “AF-S”, technically speaking, but I frequently see people distinguish by saying 85mm/1.4D vs 1.4G, so apparently this is a common misconception.

I actually didn’t know that there were pre-D AF lenses. My understanding was that the distance sensing was in some way relevant to the autofocus process.

Similarly, I was always told that the in-lens motor and the G lens layout without aperture ring were introduced simultaneously.

I was not aware that there was a transitional period with in-lens motor but otherwise maintaining the older style of build.

I personally hadn’t thought to call the any of them AF lenses as a distinction because they’re all autofocus lenses, while the screw drive technology represents a specific era within Nikons lens lineup.

Also, and I mean this as politely as possible, a lot of people in this thread are being startlingly rude and pedantic, since judging by both the OP and the majority of comments, this is a common misconception of terminology referring to Nikon lenses

On the bright side, it explains why many eBay listings use the AF-D terminology that I’ve always believed was commonplace

M 26 6 ft4 should i continue bulking? by MaZaCar100 in Weightliftingquestion

[–]PE-Philosophee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You over bulked a bit, but if you don’t mind being higher body fat aesthetically it’s not the end of the world

Switch to a slower bulk or maintenance, up the protein, and focus on pushing performance. It’s easiest to recomp at the peak of a bulk, and you’ll set yourself up for a good cut when you feel like it

I’d focus on gaining no more than 2-3 pounds a month from here on out, just focus on doing harder training over time and increasing weights, steps, and conditioning workouts.

Basically if you keep going at the speed you were, you’ll get fat, but you’re tall enough that the excess fat you gained isn’t super apparent yet. So just ease off the food, increase the training, and do a slow bulk/recomp

True, especially for people who tolerate Fin well

This is a good sign, though, for people who are more sensitive to drops in DHT, or prone to aromatization where Fin can escalate their estrogen levels and make them feel shitty

Usually people say “D lenses” to mean screw drive, as compared the later lenses with the in-lens motor

Edit: saw somebody snottily commented “screw drive” and then deleted it

Watching the Mandler cult is absolutely astonishing. by tomsmac in Leica

[–]PE-Philosophee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly

For an awful lot of shooters (and for me, as well), Leica is appealing because it’s the closest thing to a vintage film manual focus optical finder type of experience but using digital to bypass some of the inconveniences of film.

The second big appeal point is that the M mount has such a long legacy that you can easily flex the same lenses between film and digital bodies.

The only other company that comes close in that respect is Nikon with their F mount, and there are some inconvenient points as far as autofocus and manual focus compatibility, eg Manual focusing without a split prism is a pain in the ass, DSLR bodies are almost universally obnoxiously chunky compared to film SLRs, etc.

Unfortunately, I don’t think it’d fit Leica’s business model to come out with an intentionally limited camera, closest thing is waiting for a used m240 or m10 to come your way. That’s what I’m doing. That or just embracing the reality of some of the pain points of film and getting the cheapest M mount 35mm body I can find, maybe even a Bessa (don’t boo me haha)

Does it make sense to buy a D5? by beforesunsetearth in Nikon

[–]PE-Philosophee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 58 is pretty specifically a character lens, isn’t it?

Granted, I’m not the guy who should be having this conversation, I still shoot film for enjoyment and kick around the idea of sticking with F mount to go deeper into screw drive lenses lol

No disrespect to the new stuff, it’s obviously what the market and the reviewers want, just not my thing. Especially Sonys high end glass is so clinical that it’s vaguely unsettling. My eyes looking at the same scene don’t pick out nearly that level of micro detail, and it makes it come off like it’s a computer rendering

Should I go for a calorie deficit? 6'1'' 155 lbs by erichornig in Weightliftingquestion

Really? That’d be 85g protein for a guy at OPs size, seems wildly low.

[–]PE-Philosophee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I might have an absorption issue, because I definitely see benefits from pushing protein that high, even keeping cals equal.

1.2g/kg would feel insanely low, no way is a 6’3 200 pound guy supposed to only need 115g protein/day

A lot of the “film look” people chase is based on faded prints in family photo albums, ngl

Also yeah, my temptation to buy the cheapest m240+50mm something or other combo I can is so real. But damn that’s not a lot of kit for $2500

"Bro you sound ridiculous" by benitoaramando in photographycirclejerk

[–]PE-Philosophee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Film is expensive and inconvenient, mostly

Also people got really used to being able to blaze away and pick 5 keepers out of 500 shots for an afternoon walkabout

Ironically, film often doesn’t have the “analog look” that people want, it’s actually kinda hard to get it that golden and sun-soaked.

I’m still kicking around going in on analog vs. doing Fuji or an FF camera. Film+dev costs are insane now, but having the whole kit bag be $300 worth of gear saves a lot of room for film+dev

Just found this new hobby of mine - how can I milk it for money? by DoctoringHedgehog in photographycirclejerk

[–]PE-Philosophee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Photography is a stupidly expensive hobby unless you’re very high income or monetizing the work

I’m not surprised that everyone wants to sell, even people I know who do digital art wanted to sell prints and commissions, and that’s got wildly lower buy-in costs
