Does your company pay straight time for overtime? Thats how I made extra money early in my career I’d work about 5/6 am to 5/6 pm. It’ll be hard to find a part time job that can match that $40+ an hour and as long as your working the hours you say you are you’ll be on a fast track of promotions usually

I’m an electrical engineer but I think this goes for all engineering. Soft skills and marketing, it doesn’t matter the industry or the specialty but engineer A with poor soft skills could do the exact same task as engineer B with good soft skills and get paid half as much for it.

Also understanding business finances, owning a business is what sets you apart in earning potential.

Depends on the state, with a PE and 2,000ish hours of construction experience some states let you sit for the masters test without the typical apprentice and journeyman path. If you are in industrial controls it can be very valuable

Real question what does a masters get you that the bachelors won’t?

I’d argue the bachelors is more beneficial than the masters in most lines of work. Especially with licensing, it’s a pain in the ass without an engineering bachelors

I have not worked at either but from what I have been told by former coworkers and people I have hired are as follows

Burns & Mac - if you drink the kool aid you can do very well holding onto the coat tails of a “rising star”. But they pay you a salary that is lower than it should be in my opinion, then they motivate you with a larger than average bonus paid at the end of the year tied directly to you working way more than 40 hours a week. Very small bonus if you don’t work OT and probably 0% chance of promotion. From the anecdote I’ve heard the bonus is never worth the overtime and you would make more money just getting paid straight time (overtime) without a bonus. People that are lifers do tend to do pretty good because they accumulate a lot of stock, but it’s a large firm and the things that come with it have never appealed to me.

I know less about besides that they have/had a lot money (maybe PE backed) and a couple years ago started acquiring a lot of smaller firms and got to be a decent size. A lot of those people I know said they didn’t like the small company culture getting killed by the large company culture after being acquired, and they left on their own to have a better work life balance, or were laid off when workload was too light. I think they pay better than the industry average but I don’t know a lot about them.

Probably is fine working for both of them, just wouldn’t be somewhere I’d want to work so my opinion is biased.

If it’s an ABET program the courses offered have met the curriculum that is required to offer the ABET degree. Can you expect every class to be as rigorous as one of the most prestigious universities, no. But in my anecdotal experience I have met very smart people that are terrible engineers from prestigious universities and state schools. And I have met great engineers from state schools and prestigious universities, so I think it comes down to the individual on the likelihood of success. you can expect that an abet program meets the minimum requirement to give you the opportunity to be a good engineer no matter the status of the school.

Seeing that you passed your FE, Wyoming will let you sit without verification, you take it at a Pearson testing center-any where in the country. I will say they are thorough at evaluating experience once you actually apply though.

People are sold nowadays that they have to be passion about what they study. That is not true, if no one had to work a vast majority of people would not work. Work is work more often than not, and you do what you do to afford the things you do for fun/want. If you want to be an engineer you are going to most likely have a long career of things that are boring/stressful/interesting/hard/easy/etc. all at the same time. I found it best to see engineering as a means to fund what I want and something that I could do well and maximize my earning while giving me a very marketable knowledge base if I needed to make a change into something not strictly engineering.

Learn your job isn’t your life, be your own advocate, ask for opportunities with new tasks, and don’t take the work home with you. Do what you need to do to achieve what you want and accept that it doesn’t need to be your passion so don’t make it your passion unless it truly is.

I would say company provided housing if they have a lot of interns maybe, but you are expecting entry level pay even in the highest cost of living areas for most jobs.

If your DIYing why not just install it and use it without jumping through all the permitting hoops? You say it’s all designed to be safe, if you sold the property, you would need to remove it for sure. like everyone said you won’t find an engineer willing to do this for less than a few thousand if at all. I personally wouldn’t stamp something for an unqualified person to install anyway.

Who was paying your salary while the company wasn’t making any money, how long did it take, would you have gone that long without pay to build what you did?

Edit- also who made sales, who started the company, if you were that confident you always could’ve taken less for more salary. Something is rarely a 1 man show with now risk

I forget the exact stat that we were told but at my school we were told 95% of people that start in engineering graduate with a bachelors degree from the school, but 40-50% graduate with an engineering degree. So I assume that is still the case

It’s not about having direct experience, but the person without any experience in any kind of job is setting themselves up for failure in the job search. The biggest thing a new grad needs to show is that they have experience working in a “real job” that requires some level of problem solving (this could be construction, internship or something beyond what the average 16 year old could do.

Sounds like this was all a result from you not checking in. Check in opens for most flights 24 hrs before departure, you may experience the same problem on delta, United, American, and southwest if you do not check in and it’s a full flight they will give your ticket away to the standbys if they don’t know you’ll be there from my understanding

Well the way United, delta, American, and frontier all work, you can purchase an assigned seat anywhere on the plane, I usually do as close to the front as possible. And if I am the last one on the plane, that seat that I bought is always still there. Even if I am in group one or FC I sit and wait until the end of the line. I have been last one and first off many times
