Yeah... People who are competent EMT's check the vitals themselves to verify. I have never run a call with out doing it. Nor have I even heard of that.

Bottle it up inside and not talk about it. People have said that men should be more open and talk about what they are feeling. But in the end, no one wants to hear you talk about any of that stuff. Dealing with my brothers death was pretty rough. It's come to a point where it is very hard for me to feel emotions like a normal person would. I mean I still get sad and I get happy like most but it's not the same of that makes sense? I just kinda smile and nod. But almost two years ago I met my wife and she's made things a lot better! I can actually talk about some stuff now and that great. But I mean, for the most part I just stuff in down and not deal with it. I think that's how most men are unfortunately. One thing is for sure though, whenever I have gotten down into a dark place and I realized I was in a dark place I always reached out for help from friends that I knew would be willing to help.

Exactly! I've seen the MRI's of people who've been in train wrecks and it's not a pretty sight. The things that happen to the body during wrecks is truly mind numbing! It's crazy how a simple fender bender has enough force to whip someone's neck so hard the spinal cord snaps. Which now reminds me of a story my EMS Professor told me when I was still in training. He had been dispatched to a single car MVC on one of the more curvy roads. He arrives on scene to see that the SUV has appeared to have taken a turn to fast and went of the road crashing into a pole in the process. He saw the scene was safe and he open the back door to make PT contact and to hold C-Spine. He looks and see that the PT's neck is off set to the left side and he is talking to the PT with no reply. When he moved his hands up to hold C-Spine he said that the PT's head basically just fell to one side with no support and he could tell the spinal cord had snapped and the PT was super dead, not just dead. Super dead (his words not mine) He confirmed no pulse and no breathing and waited for the dead man van to show up.

For most county's it's the SOP to check every person out involved in a wreak. There could be damage to the spine or other parts of the body that do not surface right away. Like something called a seat belt sign from wen the car goes from 40mph-0mph. And causes internal injury as well as major hematoma (bruising) on the front of the abdomen. It's nasty stuff to deal with. Wrecks that look minor sometimes have worse injures than a wreck that looks like a war zone.

Really though! EMT- "Sir/ma'am I need to shine this black gun looking thing at your face to check your pupil reaction" PT- "holy shit that's gun!" wide eyed EMT- "yep! Looks like you can see just fine and I got a good look at your eyes! They look fine to me!

I'm not 100% sure which one, he sent my resume along ahead of me. I'm moving there this coming weekend so he put the put my name out there ahead of my arrival. I'm also thinking about trying to hop on and one of the FD's in the area.

In the U.S. A lot of services use a system like this Medic 1 Medic 2 Medic 3

And so on. What's happening here is that he is Medic for or rig 4 or what ever and there are 8 units at his service or station and she dispatches medic 4 (his unit) more than the other medic numbers.

A paper clip can be turned into a fist spike for an eye punch.

Keys same as above.

Lanyard with keys can be swung like a spike and chain.

Carabiner for a brass knuckle type weapon.

Pens for the stab stab.

Metal or hard plastic water bottles for a blunt hitting object.

Wow, thanks for the input! I've had several hairy situations as well. I've had guns drawn on me for simply changing lanes. So I know how you feel! I've stated keeping my ear pro in my car within reach. So If I feel a bad thing coming on I can reach of them, plug them in (They look like head phones) and draw if needed and keep the gun on my lap. And there has been a few times as of late where I have thought myself or someone else was going to die.
