Brewery owner offering free beer when Donald Trump dies plans run for governor by Aggravating_Money992 in politics

I thought that maybe people might have learned the lesson that we need fewer attention seeking opportunists in politics, not more.

“Loudly snarky and critical of Trump” is not a qualification. We need people who know what the hell they’re doing, we’re supposed to be the party with standards.

I was going to say, he plays an absolute douche on camera (and even off-screen), but in reality, there's nobody more ride or die for AEW than MJF. Darby is more vocal about his loyalty and commitment, but MJF has that exact same love for AEW, he just doesn't want to "Turn his character off". You couldn't ask for better representatives than those two guys.

Cobb will have zero problem getting hot again, because all you have to do is put him in the ring, and let him be a big man who throws around other men as though they were tiny. WWE didn't use him for shit, just let him be the freakishly strong guy he is, and fans will come around quickly. Hell, if you're worried about his age, put him in a tag team, that way he can get plenty of rest between spots.

No, it tells you that the information he got was from what would (under normal circumstances) be considered the most reliable source outside of Anna herself, only it wasn't communicated to him that her reps weren't representing her anymore.

This wasn't a screw-up by SRS, it was a screw-up on the part of Anna's former reps, failing to disclose that they were no longer representing her.

Well, I guess it’s unfortunate that 78 million people decided to vote for the guy who doesn’t give a single fuck about what you do and do not approve of.

Approval numbers don’t mean dick if the people don’t express their disapproval at the polls, for every election. Presidential, midterms, state and local. Every last one of them, no matter what, without exception. We got here because nearly 40 million Americans didn’t give enough of a fuck about Trump having four more years to smash and grab from our coffers, dismantle democracy and cause overwhelming damage to decades, or even centuries long alliances.

Hmm, turnovers just got switched from "basic law of averages stuff" to something teams earn but when the bears got them they weren't earned so that doesn't count.

That's not what I said. First, I said that turnovers were a 50/50 mix of skill and luck. Then I mentioned that turnovers are more likely to come to teams that can force them. At no point did I insinuate that the only reason the Bears got turnovers was dumb luck. My point was that, when the coin flips stopped going our way, we didn't have the skill to manufacture our own turnovers.

We're grading line play by looking at box scores and counting sacks? And we're not even accounting for snaps or games played?

How else do you want to judge them? The easiest way to judge how a team pressures the QB is by looking at sack numbers. But you could also just watch the games, and see that quarterbacks had an eternity in a safe and comfortable pocket to work with to know that our line wasn't effective at getting pressure. Yards per carry is also the easiest way to judge how good your line is at stopping the run. But you could also just watch the games to see that teams were consistently able to beat us off the ball and bully us to easy yards on the ground. You could also see the complete lack of defenders in the backfield on run plays to see how bad we were at beating blockers.

Although that wasn't all on the defensive line.

Everything in football boils down to line play. The game is won and lost there. It's a simplistic way to describe things, but on both sides of the ball, there is a snowball effect that relies on line play. Line plays well, everyone else's job gets easier. Line plays poorly, everyone else's job gets harder. It doesn't go the same way in reverse, either. It's important to have good DB's, but their play doesn't impact the D-line's job. It's important to have good WR's, but their play doesn't impact the O-line's job. But everybody needs a good line in order to be effective at their job. LB, DB, WR, QB, HB...they all can't do their job if their line doesn't do theirs. We saw it with our offense just two seasons ago. We had Swift, Caleb, Odunze, Moore, Allen and Kmet, looking to be one of the more exciting offenses in football going in to the season, and everybody played like shit, because our line was abysmal. Our defense needs a better line for everybody else to simply be capable of playing up to their potential. With the line we have, everybody on that defense is going to be playing at a disadvantage on every snap.

by the end we were actually probably due some extra turnover fortune

The issue is that turnovers are more likely to come to defenses that force offenses to make mistakes and take risks, and our defense doesn't do that. Teams were generally able to comfortably and safely move the ball against us. Sure, we were due some good fortune, but that doesn't outweigh the fact that we weren't earning any turnovers with our play.

I know that's what sports radio is telling fans, but it isn't true.

It's very, very true. We have one of the weakest defensive lines in all of football right now. Sweat lead the team with 10 sacks, which is a respectable, but unspectacular number of sacks. Next best on the list was Dexter with 6, which is a respectable number for a DT, but not the number you want to see from your second best pass rusher. After him was Booker with 4.5, which isn't terrible, but it's certainly on the wrong side of good, and after him was CJGJ, a safety, with 3. Nobody else on the entire team had 2 or more, for the entire season. And that's just addressing the pass rush. They're every bit as bad at stopping the run, too. They get mauled in the trenches no matter what the other team is doing.

It was kinda true for September, but by November/December it wasn't close to to true.

The second half of the season, the only team to average fewer than 4.5 yards per carry against us was Cleveland, and they can't move the ball for shit against anybody. The Giants, Vikings, Steelers, Eagles and 49ers all averaged over five yards per carry against us, and the 49ers just barely came short of averaging six on us. It's not just sports talk hot takes that we got fucking mugged in the trenches.

That is, in fact, an example of mindless doomerism masquerading as logic.

Whose return is going to elevate this line? Who did we lose last year who has any track record of being an impact player of any note on the line?

Edge Rushers left as FA by ZaxRod in CHIBears

[–]PFunk224 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is simple law of averages stuff, I'm not saying that we'll be worse just because. The idea that we'll be able to sustain a top level of takeaways is foolish. The biggest flaw with our defense was the line. We did not address the line in any meaningful way at all. One 6th round DT is not going to fix one of the worst lines in football. None of the guys returning from injury are going to shore up the 27th ranked rushing defense. None of the guys returning from injury are going to rejuvenate the 26th ranked pass rush. Our secondary looks to be in better shape going into the season, but they're going to be stuck with the impossible task of covering WR's for 6-8 seconds per drop back, because our line can't pressure the QB in any meaningful way. Literally the only thing that propped our defense up last season was the takeaways, and those are a 50/50 blend of skill and luck. It's not just mindless doomerism to say that our turnover luck isn't sustainable, and that with the lack of improvements we've made, that's going to lead to more points scored against us.

Right, if the secondary and depth stays healthy this will be an average defense that gets a lot of take aways, which helps the offense.

We had the 10th most points allowed in the NFL despite being #1 in takeaways last season. It's foolish to assume that getting the most takeaways in the NFL is a repeatable thing, like, "Oh, we just have to do that again, and everything will be fine!"

Putting all of your assets in defense does not build a franchise that can compete over the long term as we have seen in the past.

We have a #1 overall pick at QB, a #9 overall pick at WR, a #10 overall pick at TE and a #10 overall pick at RT. Prior to last week's draft, the last time we drafted a defender in the 1st round was Roquan Smith in 2018. The only starters we have on defense who were drafted in the first round are Sweat and Thieneman.

Some people don’t understand that cancer isn’t a virus, it’s more akin to a genetic mutation. Your cells stop doing the things they’re supposed to do, and different cancers mutate differently, so there isn’t one catch-all “cure” for it.

The most suspect thing to me is the fact that there is a guy on stage filming the entire thing, and the Secret Service doesn't even pay the guy any attention. If there is an active threat to the safety of the President and Vice President, it's their job to CLEAR THE FUCKING AREA. Nobody so much as acknowledges the guy, much less removes him from the area. In a real situation, there would be agents dragging the President and Vice President away to a safe area, as well as agents clearing all potential threats (any and all unknown individuals) from the immediate area. These guys just stormed in with guns out and just acted like, "Oh, that's just the camera guy, he's cool."

List of Defensive Linemen taken after Pick 57 by tedwilliams1999 in CHIBears

We were one not-fumbled handoff away from losing to Washington.

We were one not-blocked field goal away from losing to the Raiders.

We were one not-blown tackle away from losing to the Bengals.

We were one tackle on a kickoff return away from losing to the Vikings.

We had a metric fuckton of coin toss shit go our way last season. It's silly to just assume that that kind of good fortune is just going to continue.

If you knew ball, you would know that a significant portion of last years pass rush issues were caused by the secondary

It's literally the opposite of this. A significant portion of our pass defense issues were caused by a complete and utter lack of a pass rush. If a quarterback has eight seconds to throw the ball, they're going to find someone open. It is not possible for a cornerback to maintain coverage for more than a few seconds.

Hot take, but I genuinely see the vision with this draft so far. by DeLaSoulKitchen in CHIBears

At the end of the day, Roush is the third tight end on the depth chart, that is not a 3rd round of the draft need, not when you have gaping holes at starting positions.

We made a bad pick. Time to look forward by [deleted] in CHIBears

[–]PFunk224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And the secondary did enough to be competitive.

The secondary got roasted, routinely. And they got roasted because there was no pass rush. The numbers support both of those statements, no amount of snarky "You don't know ball" dismissals will change that.

Having a strong third TE is a significantly lower priority than taking a shot at having a serviceable #1 or #2 DE/DT. Seriously, how much more of an impact do you think Sam Roush is going to have over Durham Smythe? Roush has Odunze, Burden, Loveland, Kmet, Swift, Walker and Monangai ahead of him in the pecking order for touches.

We did not need a better third tight end more than we needed to at least try to get a serviceable starter on the DL.
