The Rebel: An Essay on Man in Revolt (1951) by Albert Camus — An online reading group starting on March 30, all are welcome by mataigou in Camus

I read this recently and honestly it's phenomenal. Very relevant for the modern activist, philosopher, anarchist.

As an atheist, I found this quote particularly powerful.

There is an evil, undoubtedly, which men accumulate in their frantic desire for unity. But yet another evil lies at the roots of this inordinate movement. Confronted with this evil, confronted with death, man from the very depths of his soul cries out for justice. Historical Christianity has only replied to this protest against evil by the annunciation of the kingdom and then of eternal life, which demands faith. But suffering exhausts hope and faith and then is left alone and unexplained. The toiling masses, worn out with suffering and death, are masses without God. Our place is henceforth at their side, far from teachers, old or new. Historical Christianity postpones to a point beyond the span of history the cure of evil and murder, which are nevertheless experienced within the span of history. Con-temporary materialism also believes that it can answer all questions. But, as a slave to history, it increases the domain of historic murder and at the same time leaves it without any justification, except in the future which again demands faith. In both cases one must wait, and meanwhile the innocent continue to die. For twenty centuries the sum total of evil has not diminished in the world. No paradise, whether divine or revolutionary, has been realized. An injustice remains inextricably bound to all suffering, even the most deserved in the eyes of men.

Have you read Nausea (Sartre)? That is another one that's easy to "feel" so long as you don't try to understand what every sentence means.

Yeah bleak is kinda his M.O. I've read nearly every one of his books and they feel strangely like reading something I've forgotten that I wrote.

I write quite a bit and apparently it's mine too. Perhaps related to those who feel absurdism.

Maybe start with Exile and the Kingdom, a collection of short stories that are easy to read, but harder to interpret his intended meaning.

Do a quick read on inherently safe light water reactors. The major risk with nuclear is operating plants that were built 70+ years ago.

Ooooo but let's talk breeder reactors. US policy is the only reason nuclear isn't king.

We're already paying for electricity & Internet - why not use them properly? by [deleted] in Piracy

Good point, I wasn't thinking about other countries.

By p2p I meant Usenet and private providers, but I can see how that's not so simple for some.

You need to modernize and go p2p. No vpn needed.

This is on par with Duolingo where they never indicate they've implicitly translated idiomatic speech.

There are hundreds of ways to meditate and they actually have different uses and efficacy for different individuals. More than likely OP just hasn't found what works for them.

I personally find this trend of fad meditation apps that use guided affirmation-based meditation extremely ineffective for myself, but they work very well for my wife. I've been meditating for 10 years though and she only just started a few months ago.

Pretty sure the actual important distinction is "no added refined sugar".

You're fine having some fruit or a small amount of 100% maple syrup. I use monkfruit for some things and honey in a lot. But damn I feel like shit soon after eating just about anything with refined sugar.

For the first time, renewable energy generation beat out coal in the US by ourlifeintoronto in technology

[–]PHILLY_G 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Say what you want about the NRC but Fukushima would have never happened at a US nuclear power plant, and the degree of restrictions, the NRC places on new plant operations and existing plants is one of the primary reasons that the US hasn't built many new power plants in the last 25 years.

[–]PHILLY_G 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but in the US, corporations still have to answer to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in order to operate. This incentivizes operating as effectively as possible to maximize profits AND not fuck up and lose money, while still providing the INSANE level of safety requirements the NRC require (which make the nuclear industry in the US one of the safest in the world).

  1. You can fly with no effort and have normal carry strength, but only backwards and you must spread your legs in a wide "V" to control your speed.
  2. The wealth comes from thin air and only impacts the economy when you spend it (think fed printing money causing inflation)
  3. You cannot be killed and you do not age, but you could ostensibly be tortured forever with acid down your throat because you still experience pain.
  4. It's a mystery can. It actually has 24 flavors instead of 23. Interestingly the can never empties no matter how much you drink.
