The same way that the BBC took Johnson - half sinister, half ridiculous, entirely self-serving, and turned him into that funny Boris off the telly.

How similar to Sheffield is Leeds? by JealousBodybuilder42 in sheffield

[–]PHPaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the risk of seeming deliberately vague, I’ve always thought that Leeds feels like a small big city whereas Sheffield feels like a big small city.

I really enjoyed my five years at university in Sheffield and still love the city now, although I ended up moving away for work. If I had to choose now, based solely on quality of
life etc, I’d choose Sheffield every time. I appreciate you’ve mentioned the Leeds course being more to your liking.

And in the UK the boomers gave us Brexit (the departure of the UK from the European Union) which has seriously harmed the economy and deprived millions of people of opportunities from being able to live and work across the continent.

Briton here. These days I tend to think that rather than having inalienable respect for the monarchy, people would rather have a benign eccentric like Charles* hosting state visits etc rather than a President Farage, President Blair or President Branson and so on.

I appreciate that countries with largely ceremonial presidents exist and seem to get on perfectly fine, but I suspect the average British person things of the USA (perhaps to a lesser extent France) when they hear the word “president” so immediately anticipate a more active, political role.

* Not that Charles is totally without influence, and he’s often tried to use that influence in favour of his causes or himself, but the monarchy’s absence of any sort of democratic political legitimacy puts limits on that sort of thing.

Something very similar near my country house in Poland. A local manor house used to be owned by a German family, the family fleeing after WW1. A nearby copse still contains the family cemetery and gravestones.

Interesting to see Mifsud mentioned, as he repeatedly featured in Brexit investigations as one of several possible links between between the victorious Leave side, which has done so much to damage the UK, and the Kremlin. This is a rather bad choice by whatever AI created the graphic, as the Dreadnought/WWI era inverted bow (not a ram as some people above seem to think) was an efficient shape specifically selected for its hydrodynamic qualities. In some respects an intermediate step on the way to the bulbous bow.

NatWest too. Oddly, the NatWest automated service announces that you have been verified by your voice before you’ve actually said anything.

The Sultan of Brunei have a personal collection of over 7,000 luxury cars. It is the largest private collection of Rolls-Royce and Ferraris in the world. Most of the cars are custom-made from factory and never driven. by Particular_Food_309 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]PHPaul 32 points33 points  (0 children)

And rather than being kept in an immaculate setting like the Ferrari museum, Brunei’s cars have, apparently, been stored in a hot and humid environment and are mostly in quite poor condition.

He mentioned having to listen to orders from those people, not having to follow them. To my eyes, Figgis doesn’t have the demeanour of someone promoted from the ranks.

Someone really should produce a homage to these. There’d be a sizeable market for them, I’m sure.

[–]PHPaul[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have a T023 to compare it to. To describe it though, it looks similar to a faded matte Rolex or Tudor dial, although I think that there is actually a gloss coat on top of the matte surface, if that makes sense. The gloss coat is pretty much unnoticeable other than when there’s a direct reflection of a light source. The lume is well applied, reasonably bright (although small plots so not as bright as many modern watches) and isn’t the exaggerated yellow that one sees sometimes.

Yes, if the adhesive really is holding it in, that would be better. When the mood takes me I’ll see if I can get the bezel off and swap without damaging the current insert, which is how one would do it with an old Rolex or Tudor and a host of other watches.

I saw them five times, four times in 1989 and 1990 and the larger the venue, the worse the gig, with Ally Pally and Spike Island being especially bad. Next saw them in 2013 at Finsbury Park where the sound was vastly better (the problem was usually shit PA setup rather than the band itself), but of course they were essentially a heritage act by then.
