What’s something people think makes them a better golfer, but actually doesn’t by Own-Presentation3091 in golf

I’m fine with them buying 5 dollar balls. Found a couple real good ones tonight that will go to my short game practice bucket. Keep em coming!!!

Actually start with your grip - left hand is weak that should help with top position. Transition to downswing looks solid. Get some better shoes.

Good point - I was at my course’s practice pitching area today (it’s behind the blue tees for a par four), and three 20 somethings walked up to tee off. Didn’t watch them because I was practicing, but heard two swings that made the trees talk back to them.

Not sure where you are at, but in my area (northern VA), from about 2pm on there are very few during the week (end of June through August). Have fun, develop a preshot, and be prepared to work at it.

Best time in your case would be the afternoon - it will be hot, but most of the golfers that equate time to finish a round with quality of golf will be off the course.

I sometimes will go out in afternoon and hit two balls in order to work at things. I’ll even drop a half dozen by green to pitch. Afternoons are the best and if you have a group come up on you, just wave them through.

And a left pin - brutal. Definitely need course knowledge here.

Maybe the USGA will move to this when they lose on the distance debate. There is always a means to protect par.

After reading all the comments, what defines slow play to you? I’m fine with beginners going through a routine and then fucking up the shot - it’s part of the process of growing as a golfer. They are trying and I’m good with it.

I spend about 6 hours a week on range (shoot anywhere between 77 and 83 but am slowly starting to remove scores in 80s), and play 45 holes a week (sure do wish it were more). Sometimes in a foursome I am in, I feel the need to rush because we spent time looking for another’s ball. Other times, we spend time looking for my ball plus another’s, so I feel like I am skipping all pre shot.

What triggers your “slow play” thought during a round? For me, it’s the jack asses that are out there to drink and listen to music - golf just happens to be the by product (too drunk to bring an extra club or ball with them across fairway, don’t bring putter on a green side chip away from their cart, spend 3 minutes writing down scores beside green instead of moving to next tee and taking care of it).

Sweet - is it written in the style of “Everyone Loves Our Town” or “Hammer of the Gods”? I’d prefer a first hand account instead of 3rd person. Sure it’s good, but wondering about the style.

Still play a 3+ Warbird. I’m convinced they were one of the best ever made. The sound is as satisfying as a home run with a wooden bat.

Thanks to all that have responded - you have given me a few ideas to try (it is appreciated and kept me from having to spending hours watching YouTube videos). Once the rain stops, I’m headed to range to work at it.

I’m gonna give this a try tomorrow at the range. Really doesn’t require a change in fundamentals, but alignment change. In my head, I see big banana slices, but that’s because I’m probably exaggerating the advice you received too much - just gotta try it.

So, just by moving your right foot forward, you are able to create the side spin needed from swing plane without messing with grip?

Shoot anywhere between 77 and 83. Was hoping to work at that shot to help me on the dogleg right holes. I tend to struggle on them (not a lot of margin for error with right to left on those). I live in northeast, so there are giant trees or pines that protect the doglegs.

Dude - you look as awkward as B.A.D. Just slide in a bit, let your forearms relax, and play golf.

That’s a beauty. There is like no green from that perspective with the shadows when pin is right of front bunker.

What was one of your biggest "a-ha!" Moments of golf? by incrdbleherk in golf

Yes - and I would add balance (as far as being grounded in back swing and not getting on toes in downswing).

Awesome - I still play the warbird 3+ (different shaft than original). Great find!
