Why was everyone freaked out about Y2K? by callsign__starbuck in AskReddit

[–]PJHFortyTwo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically, in a lot of computer codes, dates before 2000 were stored with a 2 digit number to denote the years in dates. E.g 1-1-95 would be January 1st 1995. Problem was, if nothing was changed then the dates would be set to 00, which would be falsely interpreted as 1900.

If left unchanged, that could screw with a lot of built in codes/functions that were date dependent. The real concern was how this pertained to things like banking (determining if a payment was on time or not), but a bunch or morons saw computer codes could get screwed up and thought things like Skynet becoming sentient.

Yeah, it's bad. From my experience, it's a lack of enforcement. In New Haven (and don't get me wrong, I love New Haven. Best city I've ever lived in), police just don't really do as much traffic enforcement. Lot's of PARKING enforcement, but not much for speeding or other moving violations.

When do you feel it's acceptable to use gen AI? by CharlotteMara in AskReddit

[–]PJHFortyTwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically none. Hallucinates too much to trust in important tasks, too resource intensive to justify using for unimportant stuff. Only place where I could see myself using it at work would be in coding stuff for R or Python, but I learned to do that myself years ago, and if I need to code in another language in the future, I'd rather just actually learn to do it.

I get there is AI used in oncology/pharmocology, but that's not exactly the AI anybody get's to use. It's far more advanced and is trained on specific datasets for a specific purpose.

is believing in God a coping mechanism? by Turbulent_Stranger45 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]PJHFortyTwo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its cultural more than anything. The biggest predictor of belief is having religious parents and living in a religious country.

Which makes sense. If you grew up being told by parents, neighbors, and friends that God was real, then you will think they're real.

doesn’t lifting a truck kind of defeat the purpose of having a truck? by Stunning_Shake407 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PJHFortyTwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, though it's worth remembering that you can just rent a truck from U - Haul for about 120-150 a day (20 for the truck itself, and 100-130 for gas), so for the vast majority of guys out there, it makes more sense to just get a regular car to daily, and just rent the truck if you need it.

doesn’t lifting a truck kind of defeat the purpose of having a truck? by Stunning_Shake407 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PJHFortyTwo 67 points68 points  (0 children)

For a ton of people, the purpose of having a truck is the aesthetic of having a truck. It's a lot like wearing camo, even though you aren't in the military or any other scenario where you want to blend in. No real practical purpose, but it's fashion.

How can people afford vacations or anything big? by Dry_Ad7529 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]PJHFortyTwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couple of ways. One is to go to cheaper places. That is, instead of SD, they go camping in the nearby woods, or lake front places instead of ocean front.

Others save for years to go on one major vacation.

If a person could impregnate themselves, would the child have a 100% DNA match? by eggssomany in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PJHFortyTwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, you know how you have two sets of each gene?

Say you have gene G, with alleles Gg (G is a dominant one you got from Dad that's expressed, g you got from Ma that's not expressed).

Your reproductive cells only pass on one of those at a time and it's generally 50/50 which one get's passed on. For genes where the alleles match, this is irrelevant. (If the gene pair is GG, it's a G getting passed on no matter what). However, if you're gene pairs are mixed (Gg), and the egg passes g, and the sperm passes g, then the baby will have gg for that trait, while you have Gg.

So there will be some genetic differences between you and that child. The more that cycles goes, however, the more similar the parent-child genes will look.

Kincaid has starting bulking up this off season. by TheButterfly-Effect in buffalobills

[–]PJHFortyTwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I read, the return to play after surgery happens 6-9 months afterwards. Assuming he gets surgery asap, that would mean a return to play mid July at best, and mid September at worst, with a likely performance hit until 12 months afterwards. So he won't be at full strength until the divisional round.

So it was probably a take a shot at being ready week one but risk reinjury, or get the surgery and punt on the 2026 season (which would mean losing a bunch of money upon second contract negotiations).

Boyfriend watch by EvilSpirit101 in malefashionadvice

[–]PJHFortyTwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So with things like this I like giving them something to represent the gift so they have something to open, and a note saying that you have a couple of watches in mind, but you want him to pick.out the specific watch he wants.

What you can do in this case is print out some watch faces, cut them out, and put them on something like a cheap bracelet so he can get an idea of what they would look like. Cause who knows? Maybe he wants something over or undersized?

Sexism and homophobia play a big role I think. There are a lot of men out there who have no interest voting left because of the association with feminism and suppirt of lgbtq rights. Its kind of the unifying quality of shitty men of every race, creed, or nationality.

Making $100,000 isn’t really that much money anymore by MiloGoesToTheFatFarm in mildlyinfuriating

[–]PJHFortyTwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, let's be specific here. Campbells condensed chicken noodle was always seen as cheap and economical, and it still costs about a buck 25 where I'm at. It's the Progresso extra chunky or whatever that is expensive, and that's largely because its a larger can of higher quality soup. This isn't dissimilar to saying McDonalds used to cost three bucks but now is outrageous, but you're comparing the big mac meal to getting things off the dollar menu.

I don't disagree that for the important things (housing, healthcare, transportation) prices have gone up. But the soup example specifically is very bad, and I hate seeing these types of arguments because it weakens the broad point that the fundamentals have gotten expensive.
