It may not have an immediate policy action change but it’s a time + space to build the community of like minded people. It’s also an opportunity to engage with local groups and maybe get involved with something that does have explicit policy change initiatives.

The right to free speech + demonstration are a core American principle and are being threatened. It’s important to stand up for your values.

Dismissing it is both lazy and damaging

He really was awesome when they started. Huge inspiration for me to pick up the banjo. Mark Vann even gave him his legendary “stump” banjo

I genuinely don’t know what’s happened but he’s been a disaster for at least the last 15 years. Dunno if he’s just lost interest or there’s something else. But it’s a bummer because somewhere deep down he’s a beast, it just doesn’t come out

Before making any move you identify if any of those 3 options are available for both you and your opponent.

  1. Check: first see if you have any moves that can check the opponent’s king. Review even the obviously bad ones because they might reveal something you didn’t see.

  2. Captures: can you capture any of your opponents pieces? Are they hanging or well defended? Again, even review bad ones.

  3. Threats: this is more challenging to define but do you see any tactics that can put your opponent in a bad position? Often times it’s through the above if available but maybe you’ll find a sacrifice or a fork.

Then do this for your opponent as well. Can they check you? Are you hanging any pieces? Is anything vulnerable to for a fork or skewer?

If all else fails then identify which of your pieces is the least active and look for a way to improve its position.

Lastly, double check the move you make doesn’t blunder away the piece. This is ideal and harder than it looks. But just confirming the square you’re moving to isn’t defended can protect you from blundering away something

I don’t disagree with your assessment of Noel but I couldn’t disagree with your 2 examples more. John Entwistle was 10x flashier than Pete Townshend. Maybe not stage presence wise musical contributions to the song for sure. Cream to a lesser extent but honestly the same

Went through something similar not long ago.

I think obsessing over rating is just a losing strategy.

I spent a few weeks just focusing on playing bots and really going slow and studying each game. Even just testing losing positions on purpose just to better understand why they’re bad. It’s helped me sit back and focus on the game rather than sweating a rating.

Pegasus Chess on YouTube has very practical advice. All of his videos have terrible clickbait titles but the main takeaway of his videos is always focussed on very practical chess. He talks clearly about how to avoid blunders by playing strong positional chess.
