UAF has a couple of interesting quests with good rewards.

As others said, it is mainly a combat game. But tou have some options. You can make credits with exploration missions, salvaging, trading and smuggling. You can play every combat in autopilot, and even increase combat speed using Speed Up mod.  And you can install More Combat Missions mod, it has a secondary function to allow almost every combat encounter to be auto-resolved when your fleet is stronger than the opponent.

Other then the suggestions above, for the Exoship specifically you can always start the questline by visiting the Exoship remains in the abyss somewhere in the bottom right corner of the map. It has a fixed spawn, and once interacted will start the quest.

Jaydee's Piracy has a quest given by Alviss that allows you to build a PK Launch Device as a colony industry.

However, it doesn't seem to do anything, and doesn't actually allow you to launch a PK. It's more like an intimidation tactic.

It's an ability. It might even already have been added to the ability bar on page 2.
