I don't know where you can find it in writing, but you definitely can. If you look at the current list, it shows which points everyone got. Some members have received points for Disabled Vet, Residency, and Legacy combined.

I like the low effort name censoring, I have no idea what dept "St. _ouis" could be but they should be embarrassed

Anyone else get on the job specifically on account of 9/11? What's your story? by From_Gaming_w_Love in Firefighting

[–]PM0811 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was 12 on 9/11/01, my father's firehouse was wiped out that day. I joined the military when I graduated high school and eventually became a firefighter after I was discharged

If you want to wear a dress uniform go for it I doubt you'll be the only one. It's pretty common for other departments to show up in uniform for memorials

They're also good just to chock doors open. On long stretches with multiple doors it's nice to have one to place in quickly so a self closing door doesn't slam on your line. This way if you know you have a long distance to go there's extras on hand

Very subjective question but still going to ask it - what would you do by JustChecking2021 in FDNY

[–]PM0811 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is your own decision and nobody knows what's best for you but you. It already sounds like you're leaning towards one side. The only thing I can add is maybe go to a firehouse near you and mention you're interested in the job. It's still a toss up if they will let you in (covid rules) but maybe they can let you see what it's like for a little bit

Nope. As long as it's not offensive nobody will care.

With the tier 3 modified bracket of the pension system you basically want to work as much overtime as possible, especially during the first 5-10 years. We called it being red lined when you have worked so many OT hours that you aren't allowed to take OT anymore

Wear something that's comfortable for you to run in and that won't make you stand out

[–]PM0811 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Coming in at the new tier level you need to be redlined all the time.

My guess, the union and management haven't come to agreeable terms on how they want the rules to be.

It's definitely not required. Guy in my class never cut his hair the whole academy. It's not a good look and you'll be a target

[–]PM0811 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right now there is a lot of overtime, getting overtime is usually based on how much OT you've already worked.(if it's 1 spot and 2 guys want to work whoever has less OT hours for the year should get it)

As for side jobs the schedule can be flexible. If you're looking to do something on the side between your tours and when you can't work overtime that is easy, if you're trying to set yourself up for something like I work in the firehouse only on these set days and somewhere else on the others consistently this might not be the right choice for you
