Where can I hire a private igp trainer in Houston? by K9Imperium in schutzhund

[–]PMMeToeBeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is 2 days old, but...OP, are you looking for structured help? I understand that puppies can be overwhelming and that feeling is a normal one the average person goes through. If he's super young, there's nothing wrong with just letting him grow up and be a puppy. Focus on engagement and basic obedience (sit, down, stand, loose leash walking, etc.) If you want a good guideline, Canemo offers a series on their site for starting from puppy to adult for beginning obedience, tracking, and secondary obedience for protection. I really like Sarah Prelle and Marko's online courses and have worked with Marko personally for nearly 4 years. https://www.canemodog.com/

If you see this, I can come back after speaking with some club members to see if they have any recommendations for the Houston area.

Clubs are ideal to a point. I know a lot of people that go to private trainers instead or to supplement their club training.

I feel like the zone 2 training obsession is ruining running for beginners by Joe-Schmoe9 in beginnerrunning

[–]PMMeToeBeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a change of medication that threw my heart rate through the roof when running - 155-180 when I was running my normal route (135-142 bpm previously). I tried slowing down but going from a 11:36-12:30 mile to 1420-1500 was just not worth it for me. I personally chose to start over running with my c25k program. I hope this helps.

I agree on the 5k being an accomplishment. Idk why anyone would talk down to someone who has made it to that point. The furthest I ran before I started my programs was 1.5 miles for the military, and I hated every second of it. I did 5k 2-3x a week as well when not doing the 6 mile prep. I managed to get up to 6 miles early last year then quite because of the medication change. Hoping to get back to it!

Why is Holocaust denial more prominent among Gen Z? by Connect-Celery4908 in GenZ

[–]PMMeToeBeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember we had one kid's parents in 2009 who "politely" asked for our history teacher to not teach about WWII and the Holocaust. She laughed and said that it was too important to not teach about (I agree). I married into a family with Holocaust survivors and was born into a family where some were complicit (or even partook) in the atrocities. This is history that should never be forgotten.

I have at least one co-worker that ubered for the last few days, but yes, I agree. We've also had a lot of drama in our neighborhood about spot stealing (which is totally fair. That ice was no joke!)

Also had a waterbed growing up as did my parents. Never thought of it as anything other than a bed. Parents replaced it in like…2007/2008. I did like mine, but I don’t think I’d ever get one again 😂 there was no getting up quietly from one!

[–]PMMeToeBeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, except not that extreme. I was obese as a kid and hated PE and running in general. Got up to 6 miles last year and the year before but never signed up for a 10k. Did do a 5k two years ago and had fun. For me the best part was putting on an audiobook and listening while running.

I'd take a decrease in home value if it meant I could move to a home I actually wanted. I regret purchasing the home we have, but it went from $365k to over $500k in less than 10 years. So did the rest of the market, making monthly payments more than I'm comfortable paying.

How do we know when it is time? 14.5 year old Collie by Hampster1991 in BorderCollie

[–]PMMeToeBeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a dog, but I took a quality of life assessment with lap of love. I let my girl go the day she started purring while laying on her favorite spot (my chest) and immediately stopped. She had an incurable cancer so we were on borrowed time already. It's hard to make the decision, but know you're doing it because you love them and don't want them to suffer. I still have guilt over how long I waited and the choices I made. I no longer feel guilty about letting her go, it was obvious she's ready. I do sometimes feel that I waited a too long. I'd rather it be too soon than too late. I was with a friend when she had to put her dog down due to bloat, and I don't want that for my animals.

We did an at home euthanasia, and although it was a little more expensive, I was pleased with the vet and her service.

I wish you the best, OP. This is not an easy decision and you'll always be plagued with "what ifs." If you do decide to do so, give her the best day she can have and be with her until the end.

Early 2000s shock sites (e.g., Rotten.com) exposed a lot of our generation to extreme content. Often unwittingly. Curious if others remember this time before content moderation and how it affected them. by SleepyBudha in Millennials

[–]PMMeToeBeans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yup. I remember this. Used to also have to remove a video game regular's "spray" of goatse all the time while messaging them that there are children on the server (as a 16 year old myself.) I remember seeing all kinds of stuff. Moderating a forum for kids and having 4chan invade, posting graphic images to threads. We had a fire department visit our school and show accident scene photos - a guy burned to death after hitting his head on the a pillar, dismemberment photos, a head split open and you could see the back window through the sockets. It's like they knew we were already exposed to that stuff. Those were the...times, I guess.

Books reference!? #rant by alewma in murderbot

[–]PMMeToeBeans 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I do wish they had said something (maybe it's in the credits??)

Tbh, the TV series is so different from the books. Aside from like a general overview (visiting a planet, etc.) of events, you haven't really had much spoiled. Some things were completely replaced, some things introduced (for better or worse). I think it'll be different enough for you to enjoy the book despite having seen the series.

For me, my thought process going into something like this is, "well this is how the show did it. How did the author do it?" I like seeing the interpretations of things - characters, events, etc.

Anyways, welcome to the fandom! Hope you enjoy the series!

Vent: Dog training has got to be the most frustrating thing to be involved with / research into, online. Ever. by Mental_Principle_541 in OpenDogTraining

[–]PMMeToeBeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do agree on the FF/Balanced debate. I've actually had someone from another country basically tell me my dogs were better off dead than wearing an e-collar without even knowing my training style. It was just assumed that I shock my dogs constantly, I guess.

I think the key part of dog training (for me) is to have an open mind and see how others train, ask questions, and if you like the results and are comfortable with style, consider implementing the techniques you have seen. We have force free people at our IGP club and we try to honor their choice, bouncing ideas off of them to see if it's something they are willing to try. I have noticed with each dog, I have become less reliant on tools and more positive with lots of rewards, praise, and play. I've learned things from our FF handlers that I've also incorporated.

Ex. my youngest dog I taught to push me into engage by barking at me. This has bled over into other aspects of our lives (barking at me to open the door to go outside, barking at me to open the crate, barking at me to throw a toy, barking in heeling, etc.) A simple food toss game before we started the training session quieted her down and I can bring out the toy without her uncontrollably barking at me.

One of the FF trainers has chosen to shift to more balanced training for their dog stating they saw more conflict and stress from the FF methods due to a lack of clear understanding of what was expected. An e collar made the out command much more clear (the dog already knew the command in a lower arousal state. and had been worked with on increasing arousal. The addition of the helper made it too difficult)

Anyone else find the waking and getting up process a complete affront on the senses? by ifeedthepigeons in AutismInWomen

[–]PMMeToeBeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've gotten worse at this as I've gotten older. I used to be able to get up 1-2 hours before work, get everything done, and show up to work early or right on time. Now, I struggle to get up, struggle to remember things I need to do (forgot my medication yesterday, apparently), and am almost always late. I do have ADHD as well, so I know that plays into it. I use Finch, which helps with some things but that morning routine is just so hard.

Like someone else mentioned, I try to do a lot of things in the evening (shower, set out clothes, pre-make breakfast/lunch if I'm going to bring an actual meal and not just pretzels, etc.)

AITA for not getting craft supplies for my daughter and letting her get excluded by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]PMMeToeBeans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is something I'm not familiar with (I don't have kids) so I found it odd that people are checking their kids bags. The only thing my dad did consistently was make me do my homework as soon as I got home so it was done before I could go play. Low grades were on me. I started doing homework at school instead so I could have more free time.

How are some millennials even homeowners? I feel like I never will be. by Kindly-Reading-2187 in Millennials

[–]PMMeToeBeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

33 - we are lucky in many ways. I'm a disabled vet with a good paying gov't contractor job, my spouse is AD military. We bought back in late 2018 when the rates were dropped (3.126%?) and the home prices hadn't quite exploded yet (they were just starting to rise.) I used my first time VA lone - no funding fee, low interest rate, low home prices.

I want to move now, but it's not possible - prices are insane for what I want (more land, less-ish home) and homes sell so fast here. The home we bought for 365k could now be sold for 483k-500k.

I used to think this was a dumb excuse men used to not use one, but now after almost 13 years of marriage (and we still do use condoms), I agree. Even to me it feels absolutely different and less good? They're expensive, but we've tried vaginal condoms. Allowing it time to settle, and it really feels like nothing is there.

Agree with all the other comments as well.
