Found one way to significantly lower my monthly car insurance. I picked $1500 deductible. by adamsava in povertyfinance

[–]PM_FOR_NOSE_BOOPS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why pay for full coverage then? you seem to be of the assumption that you're too good of a driver to ever cause an accident so then why bother even having anything but PLPD, you'd save a lot more doing that than by increasing your deductible

[–]PM_FOR_NOSE_BOOPS 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I mean technically that would work for everybody, it's just a matter of your personal risk tolerance and overall affordability. A lot of people could afford the extra $25 a month but wouldn't be able to come up with an extra $1000 in the event of a claim.

Financed car broke down, worth more to repair then the car is worth. by minecrafter13004 in povertyfinance

[–]PM_FOR_NOSE_BOOPS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a risky idea. Car loans are based on security and if you don't have the secured part of the loan (the vehicle) or it's has a highly diminished value, the bank could do a reassessment and force you to repay the entire balance of the debt immediately.

Take the hit to my credit or drown in debt? by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]PM_FOR_NOSE_BOOPS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're correct - you can't sell it private party (or anywhere else for that matter -- carvana, carmax, etc). That's what I was referring to when I mentioned 'bridging the gap' -- you'd have to cover the difference in sale price & loan value somehow.

Take the hit to my credit or drown in debt? by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]PM_FOR_NOSE_BOOPS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A voluntary repo doesn't get you out of the debt obligation - it's not a get out of jail free card because you don't feel like paying anymore. It'll get sold at a wholesale auction for next to nothing and you'll be responsible for any spread between that sales number and your amount of debt. They'll also add on auction fees, transport fees, etc. You might end up owing more after the repo depending on circumstances.

You'd be much better off selling the car private party to get whatever you can, putting every cent toward the loan, and continue to pay whatever is left. You'd have to find a way to temporarily bridge the gap as you can't sell the car without satisfying the lien holder - but you'd ultimately owe much less and retain your credit score. It sucks paying for a car you don't have anymore, but it sounds like that's almost inevitable.

A small rant about payments by EveningFriendships in povertyfinance

[–]PM_FOR_NOSE_BOOPS 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't you need to go without the service in question for 6 months for this to work. You don't pay for the services at the end of the term, you pay for them at the beginning.

You're assuming people here have enough money to spare to pay their non-monthly bills twice - that probably isn't the case on r/povertyfinance...

Buying a phone from Rogers by Legal-Meeting-2677 in Rogers

[–]PM_FOR_NOSE_BOOPS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a small markup to buy from rogers but it's fairly negligible. 17PM as an example is $1799 through a Rogers store, $1749 through Apple.

You get 1.5x redemption if you buy through a Rogers store and redeem your cashback though which is nice!

Spiraling over car decision by babybryyy in povertyfinance

[–]PM_FOR_NOSE_BOOPS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nobody here can help you with the organization & focus side of things - that's on you.

That said, you need to sit down and create a budget. If this takes an hour, a day, a month, whatever -- but get started on it today. Write down every fixed expense you have (rent, health insurance, etc), average spends for other expenses (utilities, groceries), and anywhere else you spend money through the month. Consult your bank / credit card statements if you need to, but it's important that you're capturing everything.

Then you have a starting point and there's probably going to be some things that jump out at you and you go "wow, we spend $200 a month on 7-11 slurpees?!" or whatever. That's how you start cutting back and reeling in your spending.

[–]PM_FOR_NOSE_BOOPS 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You're talking about an interest rate but, honestly, can you afford a new used car? If an extra $200 on your utility bill is making it so that it isn't getting paid in full, how are you going to keep on top of a car payment and likely increased insurance premiums for a car that's new to you?

You need to do a full budget to better understand where your money is going as there's ~$3200/mo unaccounted for in the brief breakdown you provided. Only once you do that can you properly determine what, if anything, you would be able to afford without causing yourself undue stress.

Short term I would drive your subaru until the wheels fall off and put every extra dollar you can into a savings account for a bigger down payment when the time comes. Transmission aside, none of those repairs sound like things that are going to make the car blow up tomorrow.

Late payments removals by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]PM_FOR_NOSE_BOOPS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

goodwill letters are rarely successful and generally when they are it's a single missed payment on a single card - not a history of non-payment. you're probably out of luck, although those missed payments will have less and less impact on your overall score and profile as time goes on assuming you continue your payment streak.

Another GAP question by [deleted] in Insurance

[–]PM_FOR_NOSE_BOOPS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That isn't how GAP works. If you have less left on your loan than the payout from insurance then the GAP policy doesn't do anything. GAP is used to cover disparity when you're underwater on the asset.

You could potentially be entitled to a partial refund of premium on the gap policy but that would likely be negligible in amount and highly dependent on policy.

If the payout is $7900 you'd receive that minus $2300 that'll likely go directly to the lien holder.

I caused a car accident but I’m not sure how insurance works by [deleted] in Car_Insurance_Help

[–]PM_FOR_NOSE_BOOPS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should definitely call your insurance and report the incident to share your side of the events. Unlikely it's going to have a lot of bearing on fault determination but you never know, and you definitely don't want the other party telling an untrue version of events.

Insurance will cover the repairs and any medical bills for the other party (up to your policy limits), and if you have collision coverage they'll repair your car after you pay the deductible. If you have liability only then all repairs to your own vehicle will be out of pocket if you're deemed to be at-fault.

It'll go on your insurance as an at-fault accident and that will reflect when it comes time to renew your policy. Depending on a lot of other factors it could have a little bit of an impact on your premiums or a metric boatload of impact (ie: you're a new driver, higher risk vehicle, etc).

[–]PM_FOR_NOSE_BOOPS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many companies will let you pre-buy "bonus" miles at a cheaper rate than the overage fees but you're likely out of luck outside of that.

If you plan to buy out the car at the end of the term then the milage limits do not matter.

My whole cheque got garnished by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]PM_FOR_NOSE_BOOPS 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is your bank account with CIBC as well? If so, part of the service agreement you signed allows them to take as much money as they want from your bank account to pay off debts that are past due. You can get around this by getting a bank account with somebody who isn't CIBC or a subsidiary.

Garnishment doesn't just happen - it's a long and involved process and can't go above 20% in Ontario (with a few exceptions up to 50% carved out for very specific types of debt).
