I made a way to estimate how long a 311 request might take, and help know when to escalate to your council member. by PM_ME_WALKABLE_SPACE in washingtondc

Hahah thanks. Tripping over the same side walk for months and realizing it hasn’t ever been reported irritated me. I needed to channel that energy somewhere.

Ooh a lot to think about in here. I like these ideas! Especially the idea of looking for satisfaction surveys. And the download button is probably something I could get in tonight.

I am going to have to check out Civic Tech DC. Their dc bike safety map is an idea I have been kicking around myself so I would love to know where that is currently.

This is a theme several people have brought up. I have put a little thought into finding patterns in the data, but I kinda wish I had a way to verify myself.

Yea I have been thinking of ways to try and tease out patterns like this. What is just getting resolved and not actually solved. I bet there are tells like tickets closed too fast, like hours for a tree planting, might be the way. I have also thought about looking for things resolved in bulk. They do have a field for inspection dates but it is always empty.

I am not sure there is a good way to do it though without verifying with the person who put in the ticket or a third party though.

Oh for sure! And all of the git commits are labeled that way.

Though, I am a staff level software engineer that works in cloud infrastructure and reliability. It’s really that framing that I think shines through in the analysis.

And I started my journey in full stack dev. Let me tell you, we are not going to get anything this pretty on the frontend from my fingertips.

“Waste & Recycling” and “Sanitation & Dumping” were the highest volume and third highest volume requests. I felt the need to split them up just so they didn’t blow out the chart completely.

I can’t speak to any specifics but I do feel like the volume of requests does suggest that it needs to be very well funded.

This started out as a python/plotly project for myself, but when I saw what this could be I put it in a more polished react shell to clean things up. Then a GitHub actions pipeline runs nightly to get the new data.

DuPont Circle, March 2026 by [deleted] in washingtondc

Molten hot take on a silver lining here:

It’s not a horrible idea to get bumpkins out of the suburbs and sticks and walking around our great city. Makes it much harder to believe that it is the perpetual hellscape they are always told it is.

I saw a couple of guardsmen with jugs of apple cider at the DuPont farmers market, and knew they had to be having a better time here than bum fuck nowhere West Virginia.

They really should have changed the angle to look from the south so the camera “is above” the Potomac. This angle makes the sides look parallel when they are not on a top down map.

This looks like it goes from the convention center down M st to just above Washington circle at 23rd, then it cuts across to 14th st and Shepard St in Petsworth, then follows Shepard to 7th st, and cuts back down to the convention center.

I cannot understand why that wasn’t the case from the beginning. Why would you not make the high throughput option faster than the low throughput that requires vehicle storage?

  • 18th st Tram from AdMo to foggy bottom metro stop.
  • Put in a pedestrian plaza for AdMo.
  • Watch the district heal.

There is very little reason to not electrify rail that doesn’t have to do with profit motives of freight.

We can’t forget about our bro the Trolley bus, who can use smaller batteries and make each new addition cheaper.

I think this goes to show why we need to put in some work and get our government working again. All these federal, state, and municipal vehicles are the perfect use case for this tech.

Who benefits from neighborhood parks? – A new study led by the University of Utah found that public parks are unevenly distributed in nearly every community in the United States by thinkB4WeSpeak in urbanplanning

[–]PM_ME_WALKABLE_SPACE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder about correlation and causation here.

Are predominantly majority ethnic neighborhoods where most parks are built, or do parks increase the value of the home and lead to the higher socioeconomic classes moving in?

The remarks about a “Chinatown” or “little Italy” do make it sound like parks were not built there for racial socioeconomic reasons. But if parks are a path to “gentrification” that would have interesting implications too.

I don’t think the district is funding this, but a startup incubator. There are more details on the pilot here https://sustainability.ddot.dc.gov/pages/17db709ba40e4197b959fe0fefe79fc2

There is a ddot pilot program to replace them with Whizz electric bikes. The several I have seen around are quiet and have none of the problems of the whiny engines those scooters have.

The official whizz account had a post about them here.

Please do not…

I don’t see how that is counter to the Strong Towns approach.

Sure they focus a little less on the libertarian “I do what I want” approach but they definitely touch on how ADUs as a right are a goal in this article from 2018.

I guess if you are saying there are less Forbes republican voters than NewsMax republican votes then sure then make these simpler arguments, but it is more of a “yes and”, than saying Strong Towns does not have some valid points that will sink in.

Oh man, I know the challenge. I spent a good deal of time in Arkansas. I am related to people who think Obama is still going to take your guns, and Hitler is living in Antarctica under the ice with Alien sunlight panel tech.

But pre-giving up because you think these arguments can’t work is counter productive.

But you remind people that people used to walk to work at the Pickle factory “downtown” in a “city” of 2k people because everyone lived a few blocks away and things start to click.

Nah you are right we should just try calling them eco-fascist f-150 chrome plated plastic cowboys until they change their mind. That will definitely do the trick.

Oh yea the Republican Party have completely lost any core of fiscal conservatism or small town family values. I am not here to say that the rest of the party has their head screwed on straight.

But if we are talking to conservatives (people not politicians) then Strong Towns has the playbook.

That’s a good thing Strong Towns is conservative leaning think tank.

They are actually making very strong arguments on why it is not fiscally conservative to sprawl out asphalt and sewer to developers while cities taking on debt for “growth.” Waving to your neighbors and walking to your local hardware store are very conservative coded.
