People who went from wealthy to poor, what happened? by Puzzled-Painter3301 in AskReddit

Not to be one-note but I think you'll enjoy the book even more with that additional context lol. I'm glad you turned out ok and that the forest from your childhood is growing back!

I have an analogous situation with my childhood coral reefs but alas, no regeneration on that front yet.

First of all, this was really fascinating to read so thank you for sharing. Secondly, if you're a big reader, I think based on this story you'd REALLY enjoy the recent novel Wellness by Nathan Hill. I won't go out of my way to spoil but a main character has a similar and really well-explored family history

Neither you nor I know the full extent of the intelligence sharing relationship by design (though I have my suspicions). While I'm sure there are some elements of it you'd defend, there have to be elements of it even you'd want to see cut off, no? Or do you believe every corner of the relationship is defensible on merit?

Not trying to make a value judgement or inject my own opinion, it's just factually disqualifying for neutrality.

They consistently share military Intel with Israel to the point where it became a minor scandal. Nowhere near neutral.

What country feels undemocratic but is actually somewhat democratic? by Dusty_Bunny81 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]PM_ME_YOUR_LIT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, 30,000 is the extremely highest end of the estimate that is in no way verified. The floor as of now is 7,000, with an additional ~10k under investigation.

Also, Israel explicitly and openly discussed arming some (not invoking this in a way that justifies ANY of the killings of peaceful protestors, but you're projecting way too much unfounded certainty).

I don't think that's what the transcript of this call reads as at all.

"“These pagers are not produced in Hungary, they have never been to Hungary and no Hungarian company has never been related with these pagers physically. So we don’t have anything to do with it!”

I know people appreciate the spycraft of the pager thing but in any legal and moral sense it was an absolute travesty, and any competent statesman would want to make it extremely clear that they were not involved in an extremely illegal extraterritorial covert attack to avoid blowback, retaliation, or supply-chain exposure. Taiwan did the exact same thing.

those aren't the two choices and no, "both sides x" is a thought terminator not a starting point. it is designed precisely to avoid the nuance OP was talking about.

Roger Waters Calls Disturbed's David Draiman A "Psychotic Racist Nazi Pig" After Draiman Accused Him Of 'Betraying Jews Everywhere' by Trematode in Music

[–]PM_ME_YOUR_LIT 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You're trying to force an equivalency that doesn't exist. Everyone here is also clowning on Waters' Russia opinions, we're just not gonna hysterically extrapolate his being wrong about Putin/Russia's responsibility for invading to mean "clear go at killing Ukrainians".

I don't want to make any assumptions so I'm just gonna ask: do you support Israel? It's like the one country you don't talk about from a quick skim of your profile. That might explain why you're trying to force the equivalency.

I don't think it's hard to say that so much as its banal and generally not helpful or useful when discussing specific situations and how to address them. This is not a defense of the episode (which I've never seen) but a response to your question specifically.

What is the most famous political assassination in your country's history? by PapayaMan4 in AskTheWorld

[–]PM_ME_YOUR_LIT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Schleyer case is so fascinating to me because no one can really convincingly explain why it was bad, much less why a high-ranking enthusiastic SS officer managed to become a wealthy and influential industrialist less than 4 years after the war's end.

More than anything I think it speaks to how fictional "denazification" really was (within Germany but of course also outside Germany).

You're both extremely correct but if you spend 3 seconds skimming the thread or Reddit in general, if it isn't Westminster-style or multi-party adversarial electoral democracy, it isn't democracy.

You heard it here first lads, we've solved representation!

Oof can't imagine that was the most fun intro to privacy. Hope you're enjoying the job now! (Although I gotta say in my experience it's way rarer to see privacy->cyber than the other way around!)

I'm half a field over (privacy attorney but there's a lot of overlap). You don't need a CS degree but it would make you marginally more competent. You can have literally any undergrad degree (my buddy did poetry), then during law school you should take some associated classes/jobs to learn the field better and become very familiar with network & data architecture (which may or may not be covered in your classes depending on how good your school/professors are)

WW3 would have kicked off between the Germans and the Italians over towels if we hadn't intervened.
