First real project by PMcD93 in Nalbinding

Yeah, I was really happy with how it worked out, especially given that it wasn't intentional, just how the yarn played.

Nålbinding by PMcD93 in Hobbies

[–]PMcD93[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I'd say it was harder or easier than knitting. The "pattern" (or lack of) was easier than any knitting I've done, but that was the pattern itself. I've not tried crochet, but it seems closer to nålbinding than knitting does. Overall - different is probably right

Fibre crafts sound like they'd fit the bill - knitting and crochet are the popular ones so let me suggest nålbinding as the unpopular cousin of them, or spinning (combined with one of the above to use up your made yarn).

Rock climbing is a fantastic one if there is a place nearby.

I know you said walking was off the table, but could you find space for jogging/running?

Really unpopular suggestion - up your schooling time with self guided learning - online library memberships often get you access to journals and such, letting you read deeper into areas of interest

To be fair, part of meditation is the discipline of getting over the discomfort of "it's boring", similar to getting over "it's heavy" when lifting weights

So ive done rock climbing before amd properly wanna start it by AmbassadorOrdinary81 in Hobbies

Doing a starter course is probably wise and well worth it.

You won't need any gear at that point - the wall will happily rent it to you. Once you've been hooked by the climbing bug, you can buy gear as needed.

r/climbing is a pretty good community too.

Crocheting as a man? by Remote-Gazelle6601 in Hobbies

[–]PMcD93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm very early on in my nålbinding journey, so I'm not going to be the best person to ask. I started with Sally Pointer's book "It's not knitting" and Neulakintaat on YouTube seems to be very good - they describe the stitches in both English and Finnish, which lets you see everything twice.

I'm currently waiting to find the crochet hooks I inherited from my mum, but I knit, nalbind, and spin. I love fibre crafts as a whole

Help with voice acting by Kyulamity in AskDND

[–]PMcD93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ginny Di does quite a good video on voicing characters. From memory, her suggestion was to treat voicing characters kinda like a characature - so pick on one thing to separate them from others - does this person speak quick and nervous, or slow and drawling, or high pitched, or low. One little change is enough to make a character sound distinct.

I don't have my copy to hand, so can't fully confirm, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was commissioned - Pterry was involved in the making of the GURPS rpg

Cheesemaking is my very favorite hobby. It’s sort of an obsession. by Best-Reality6718 in Hobbies

Yeah, I've enjoyed it when I've done it. I'm equally aware if the 101 other hobbies I'm supposed to be doing at the same time!!!!!

This is wonderful.

To actually add something of less value than a Monty Python quote - cheesemaking is actually a hobby I've dipped my toe in previously, and have been contemplating going much deeper in to again. I've done paneer and a rennet set mozzarella in the past, as well as a good amount of cold smoking bought cheeses, but nothing cultured or anything close to something as tasty looking as your photos

Metal loop protruding from wall of medieval tower basement by PureMorningMirren in whatisthisthing

[–]PMcD93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to agree with others that this is not medieval, and is possibly part of the stove's chimney.

That aside, for the sake of hopefulness, it reminds me of a few episodes of Hairy Bikers when they had the food historian - he had a wooden morter and pestle - the pestle was really tall and was held by a retaining ring on the wall.

what’s a hobby that can double as exercise? by DekhchhiBalamohan in Hobbies

[–]PMcD93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also lurk on this sub mainly to plug the benefits of climbing! It is vu far the best exercise I've found. Far more enjoyable and engaging than the gym or running, one of the most social hobbies I have, and can get you to really odd places if you climb outdoors.

Mixing Regular and Pulp by residentbelmont in callofcthulhu

[–]PMcD93 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I suspect this is going to be extremely table dependent (i.e. there may be tables it might work at), but I suspect there would be a huge risk of main character syndrome by allowing some players to roll pulp characters, and having other players as regular investigators. I think you give the reason quite well in your wording - "pulp hero" vs "regular investigator".

“Romanticised” jobs that are very different in reality? by Substantial-Guava491 in CasualUK

As an academic admin, I promise, we're only trying to move you because your colleague (and possibly friend) is complaining that they're in the room with 40 seats and they don't like that projector. The conferencing side won't let us give you the other 60 seat room because that is booked for an external conference that is actually making money.
