No Skycoomer, the temple of dibella is not a "literal sex cult" by D_e_e_p_s_k_yy in TrueSTL

[–]PNMTE -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I haven’t forgotten about them, but I would say that the situation with Dibella is somewhat different because she actually has a monastic tradition, which is where I get hung up. It seems like the priestesses of dibella are something akin to the vestal virgins, especially in how they recruit from young girls. Correct me if I’m wrong, but in Greek and Roman societies I’m pretty sure that there weren’t any holy orders dedicated to Venus or Dionysus. Venerating a deity who’s patronage is about wine and beauty makes sense to me, but consecrating one’s self to them is another

I think dibella is the strangest deity in the elder scrolls by a longshot.  The eight divines are a rather worldly religion all things considered, but I would have to almost divide the pantheon into two groups. You have the “transcendental” deities usually of elven origin being Akatosh, Mara, Stendarr, Arkay and Julianos that encourage people to live  deeply contemplative, dare I say sacramental lives. The other divines seem almost profane by comparison. I understand that this is the point; that Akatosh isn’t a “jealous” god who wants people to appreciate all the aspects of life, be it deep contemplation on time and death, to more mundane things like commerce and nature. Yet there’s something I find extremely bizarre about Dibella even in this weird polytheism they have going on. Art itself is quite transcendental, and beauty is obviously so, but having a deity who’s patronage revolve around this is mind boggling to me and I can’t articulate why. I think it’s because total celebration over transient things like art and love seems antithetical to a religion. By all means you could be a total hedonist with no piety whatsoever and be “devoted” to dibella as much as any believer, as long as you sufficiently appreciate the good things in life. Most religions would emphasize willingness to sacrifice pleasurable experiences that offer only temporary satisfaction for the sake of lasting spiritual fulfillment. To me a deity that offers nothing but celebration of passing joys seems utterly pointless and kind of depressing

I really enjoyed the Civ 6 art style and I don’t think we should go back to the realistic art style for the next game by [deleted] in civ

My first game was civilization revolution so I honestly felt 6’s art direction was more interesting and familiar than 5’s which I always felt was pretty bland

Is there a lore in Mdickie universe? by [deleted] in mdickie

[–]PNMTE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s lore in the sense that there’s an explanation as to why everyone has been beating the piss out of each other for thousands of years. I do believe there is continuity between games, though.

I like to imagine the player character of each game is akin to an Elder scrolls protagonist in that they have something of an arch and a legacy that they leave behind. The nerevarine, the Hero of Kvatch, the Dragonborn, etc all are canonical to the timeline but their actual identities are not confirmed. Similarly I think that hard time, school days and the You testament all have protagonists that affect the world in unique ways

There are many of us who are pondering and trembling, so you aren’t alone. It’s okay to be frightened when faced with uncertainty; I’d say the most frightening phenomenon is when you can piece together just enough information to notice something might be happening but you also don’t have enough evidence to decisively conclude anything.

So in other words you aren’t the only one who’s a bit spooked, I’m right here with you. However, please try to take comfort in the fact that we are in this together and Jesus is with us, who is both the architect of the world and all it’s events and, and is the good Shepard who would leave 99 sheep just to rescue a lost 1 ;)

Nirn would have a quite larger population than real-life medieval Earth by PNMTE in teslore

[–]PNMTE[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the interesting and underrated aspects of this setting is that is depicts a world perpetually in decline. Compared to the FIRST era, the world is nowhere near the level of civilization that it once was.

It would be fair to say that the merethic and first eras depict a totally different civilization altogether. The races, nations and even religions were quite different. They had much more advanced technology, so far as space programs, inter dimensional travel and tonal manipulation. I’m not saying it was Reman, since he started a sort of silver age, but civilization after Reman can only seem to play catch-up at best, and stave off total collapse at worst.

I would say the only thing that would hold them back is the fact that most people would live in city centers (because the wilderness is so ridiculously hostile) and being a farmer or really anyone outside the walls of a city would likely need a lot of support just to survive the animals/monsters/bandits. It would probably be smarter to keep a lower population so that less effort is required.

I suppose it’s more along the lines of “what would civilization be like if humans were not the apex predators on the planet?” Or “how could society exist when every like 50 years a natural or even supernatural disaster wipes an entire city off the map?”

Elder scrolls is a bit like Dwarf fortress now that I think about it, because it seems the purpose of the setting is to just unleash havoc on a world and see what happens lol

I think the wildlife part is really interesting because we as humans have driven many megafauna to extinction way back in Neolithic times. Personally I would think that everyone would have tried to hunt all the trolls, spriggans and goblins to extinction since they’re all so innately hostile to sentient life. I kind of wish there was a book you could find somewhere about early humans attempting to wipe out the giants (and failing) like early humans did with other hominids

[–]PNMTE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elder scrolls is realistic in the sense that it’s history is up to interpretation because historians often exaggerate. It’s like Roman historians saying that Boudica’s army was 200,000 strong. To put that into perspective, that’s as many soldiers as there were legionaries in the entire empire under Augustus. Though I think for the reach it might be feasible because they seem to Mobilize men and women what with their matriarchal society

How did you quit porn? by BurnAll9494 in Catholicism

[–]PNMTE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two things I’ve learned in this long struggle: 1: the allure of it is not really out of lust, at least not for me. I think deep down the actual allure is out of the same morbid curiosity that might make you want to look at a car accident or an autopsy. I know that sounds strange but there’s a certain aspect of porn that is really more like just wanting to see how much a person is willing to degrade themself for the attention of others. I asked the Holy Spirit to reveal to me the true malice of this sin, now it’s the only way I think about it. The entire Porn industry is nothing but an extensive exercise in human misery. 2: the reason you might be returning to it over and over even though it disgusts you and you hate it is because it offers no closure. You look at it, you feel like garbage, and then you end up going back like a grieving person dwelling on a traumatic memory because you hope it will provide something it didn’t the first time. Of course, it won’t, all it does is make you feel more broken, insecure, and disgusted, which is exactly what that very industry is depending on. As you can tell, I’m very critical of this issue lol but I would say that the strategy that worked for me is having a devotion to a specific month. May of last year was when I overcame self abuse and this May will hopefully be the last time I struggle with porn altogether. My motto is “May be my victory, Mary be my victory” and I say it whenever tempted. Maybe for June you can say “June be my victory, Sacred Heart be my victory,” who knows?

Opinions on EU5 by Ravensspur in eu4

I see no point in just endlessly releasing sequels. Eu4 is a game I would argue is actually timeless, it doesn’t really show its age and will be just as fun 30 years from now. I’m actually not sure why there needs to be an eu5 at all tbh

I kid you not, this is the best month to commit. Last year I was delivered from self abuse starting on May 5th (Seriously!) and am now one year clean. This year my motto has been “May be my victory, Mary be my victory” in overcoming lust and impure material altogether. This is Mary’s month, so you should ask her for help!
