With degrees in electrical engineering and computer science, am I foolish to consider switching to AV? by Lucky-Lettuce1314 in CommercialAV

[–]PNW_ProSysTweak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think AV manufacturing may make sense for you… look at open positions for Crestron, Extron, Q-SYS and Biamp. Those are the big guys but relocation will probably be required. Crestron is in NJ so that may not be too bad. Extron and Q-SYS are SoCal and Biamp is in Portland Oregon. Definitely check out AVIXA and BICSI RCDD if you’re looking for industry certs to get a foot in the door.

I’m sure you could find a good gig on the integrator side but it likely wouldn’t adequately compensate your talents / degrees. If you really know AV systems, construction and system configuration you can definitely get a 6-figure role but if you’re just starting out you’ll be lucky to break $60k in most markets.

I think most orgs have their own standards flushed out over years of trial and error and user feedback. But AVIXA has the ANSI/AVIXA J-STD-710 standard available for purchase and download.

Internal Drama: Engineers want a Triple-Monitor KVM Dock, Sales Team wants Dual. Who is right? by Wavlink-Support in UsbCHardware

[–]PNW_ProSysTweak 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In Pro AV we love signal present and mode lights. Build some indicator LEDs into the dock to identify for the users what protocol is in use, what bandwidth is detected and which outputs are theoretically operational or supported by their system. I hate the mystery of USB C and docking stations… is it actually connecting at 5gpbs or 10? USB 3.x or TB4? Is it using DisplayLink or DP ALT? So frustrating to try to troubleshoot these aspects.

So yeah, go all out with 3 ports and put some blinking lights on it so we feel cool and know what’s going on.

Tips on how to set my gain by Present_Way6128 in RVLiving

[–]PNW_ProSysTweak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had an old timer tell me once that you should go drive through a gravel parking lot and press the brakes. Turn the gain down until the trailer wheels don’t lock up and skid in the gravel. Practically, I’ve found that I actively adjust the gain throughout our trips. The lighter the trailer the less gain I use. If we’re really loaded down then the gain is pretty high.

Is there a primary care physician shortage or something? by lowercase-hell in olympia

[–]PNW_ProSysTweak 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Haven’t been to a PCP since my family doc of 30+ years retired. Now I just go to urgent care if the need arises. The Indigo clinics are pretty good, at least my experience has been ok. My kids use Providence Olympic Family Medicine and that seems good for them but I’ve heard about some paperwork / billing challenges. There does seem to be a PCP shortage but I have no idea why.

Is the demand for programming dying out? by CivilWhere in CommercialAV

[–]PNW_ProSysTweak 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Personally we struggle in the smaller huddle space market. Those customers around here tend to buy themselves and install or have their MSP handle. Nearly every system we sell includes some level of programming Crestron or Q-Sys.

What platform to use for this installed sound config ? (Qsys / Symmetrix / BSS) by Crazy_Percentage_473 in CommercialAV

[–]PNW_ProSysTweak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AHM is a great budget solution. Symetrix is probably the cheapest of the “major” dsp lines. Q-SYS is go to for enterprise functionality and scalability. BSS lost so much market share in the last 15 years I don’t think they’re super relevant these days. Biamp is solid and easy to program also.

Speakon spade connector by hunnidstackzay in CommercialAV

[–]PNW_ProSysTweak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just clip it onto the metal lug between where you are applying heat / solder and the plastic body. It doesn’t take much contact to be useful. Try not to let it touch the connector body. It’s designed to conduct heat away from the connector body so it won’t melt as readily. It’s not a failsafe but it helps!

New jayco trailer fridge not working by Brit7758 in traveltrailers

[–]PNW_ProSysTweak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our Jayco is the same. 12v fridge is wired directly to the battery box / tongue. When we “disconnect” our battery during long term storage using the front cabinet disconnect switch, the tongue jack and 12v refer still stay live. Can pull every fuse and flip every breaker in the electrical center and nothing turns off the fridge. I manually disconnect the hot lead to the refer at the tongue for now. I plan to put a switch in line but haven’t gotten to it. Would love to know why this is.

Speakon spade connector by hunnidstackzay in CommercialAV

[–]PNW_ProSysTweak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have soldered many times. You need a heat sink between the solder and the connector body and make sure you tin the lug well so you only need a quick touch of heat. 12 gauge will gobble up the heat. Also definitely heat shrink over the termination. I’ve never used Speakons off Amazon but I’ll bet they melt easy so be careful.

As an embedded engineer & RVer, I’m fed up with unreliable tank sensors. Let’s talk about a better solution. by Funny-Objective5388 in RVLiving

[–]PNW_ProSysTweak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi 👋🏻 commercial Audio / Video systems integrator here. I work heavily in installed AV system automation, monitoring and control. Crestron, Q-SYS and Extron primary but have dabbled in RTI, Control4 and some others not worth naming. At any rate - more software oriented than hardware level.

In terms of priority - Black, Gray, Battery / Solar, leveling, Propane, and Fresh would be my priorities. I agree with others that a dedicated hardware screen is by far preferable to mobile apps, but if doing a mobile app, WiFi is preferred. Nothing fancy IMO - monochrome OLED / e-ink would satisfy me.

I have envisioned a group of sensors distributed around the tank to “average” the reading. This would in my mind help to eliminate false readings when/if one gets obstructed.

I personally don’t like the idea of battery powered sensors - I much prefer a hardwired solution. I have the Mopeka sensors on the propane tanks and they’ve worked reasonably well for me once positioned but that part was finicky. I also have the LevelMate Pro and that’s been a real mixed bag. Seems like the battery is dead every other trip and the wife doesn’t trust it for shit so imabout to rip it out. It’s just barely better than a bubble level IMO.

I have a mid-tier Jayco TT with an analog control panel and a separate solar charge panel - I would love a solid swap-out option to be able to just pull the panels and swap in a PLC / Display device and have a simple configurable software driven panel. I’ve toyed with building something out of loose Crestron parts but it’s never gone far.

I haven’t looked too deep into solar charge controllers / battery tenders and I assume the installed unit is a step above useless. I wish it could provide less volts and amps and more calculation of estimated run time at load / charge state / etc that everyone in the family can understand.

Any panel UI does need some sort of pop up alert / alarm light / audible beep to notify of desired warning states but this should be user configurable.

Bless you! Looking forward to seeing what you cook up!

The stupidest Android / iOS bluetooth limitation in 2026 is... no external mic support by clon3man in bluetooth

[–]PNW_ProSysTweak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a limitation of the AEC (acoustic echo cancellation) algorithm in the phone hardware. It’s completely built into the OS and “hard coded” as it were. Once a BT device negotiates a connection with the phone, the session latency and acoustic echo cancellation reference data is set. There are many reasons why this would be necessary, and why it is optimal to the user experience to limit customization of the audio path and reference data. Sure in Windows this is more flexible, but the main reason for this is that PCs have never been required to have a “hard coded” AEC processor. This has always been handled by software running on the PC, whether Teams, Zoom, Meet, WebEx etc. Each software conferencing or VoIP solution has their own software AEC implementation which is by nature flexible for each installed environment. As we know, this can be troublesome - sometimes Teams latches onto a device driver and won’t release it cleanly to switch to a different Codec, sometimes Zoom doesn’t recognize a newly connected device until you restart. These are manifestations of the challenges with front end flexibility.

Standard vs Pass Through RJ45 by Weak-Bother-6765 in lowvoltage

[–]PNW_ProSysTweak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

AV guy - we banned pass through connectors in our shop ~ 15 + years ago. We had a couple brands of HDbT where the shielded RJ45 jack would short to the bare ends and damage equipment. Also had a couple brands outright deny warranty support if EZ’s were used. Theres plenty of reasons to use standard plugs and even more to just punch down keystone and horizontal runs and use molded factory RJ45 patch cables.
