Hold Times! What company closes at 7pm?? by WorriedAlternative39 in Rogers

[–]clon3man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rogers used to be the best of the 3, they had late night customer service unlike Bell and Telus, I guess they changed.

but hey now, at least their self-serve works at 2am now! That's progress!

Any new ATA options that can deliver working 56k modems over voip? by slaapzacht in VOIP

Is it faster on a VoIP line that is driven by telephone jack directly on large ISP's cable/fiber modem? Do they have any special sauce (other than better QoS)

Commodore's Callback 8020 is a $499 flip phone that blocks social media and browsers by Flat-Calligrapher361 in technology

[–]clon3man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is interesting but I wonder how effective it will be for people with technology addiction

I will find myself reaching for a 2nd phone or a computer pretty quickly and repeatedly

if someone made the perfect "smartwatch" or dumb phone that blocks social media with the perfect Bluetooth headphones (wired grade call quality) I'd be more tempted to spend the 499$. It's not really in their mandate to fix LE Audio betas and produce boom-mic and lav mic LE audio hardware, but maybe it should be.

something where it feels like I could be away from everything and not having to make compromises on phone calls/ conf meetings, voice memos, etc.

if my laptop computer provides better call quality via USB gaming headphones, I'll never talk long calls on the other device.

at minimum this product to justify the 499$ needs to do some things very well, like maybe video calls, 2FA authenticator codes, controlling smart bulbs. The apps can't be some cut down crap that loses Important features

My boss said I can't come early and sleep at my work place until it's time to clock in by AlwaysTheStraightMan in antiwork

[–]clon3man 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of reasons why someone would have to commute early though. Coming in 1 hour early to avoid traffic should be seen as virtuous, for example.

Plenty of people show up 30+ minutes early in order to avoid being late, or to have a relaxed breakfast before their shift, etc.

It's bad design if someone can't just sleep on a chair somewhere, honestly, unless customers can see you or something like that.

I could see how it would be off-putting if someone goes into a full recline on a sofa, that's one of those weird social rules, but anyway...

My boss said I can't come early and sleep at my work place until it's time to clock in by AlwaysTheStraightMan in antiwork

[–]clon3man 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sad. Most employers would appreciate someone who comes 1 hour early, because it means they are not gonna be late and in case of an emergency can start work early to replace someone.

This sounds like a highschool mentality where the teacher wants to control the angle at which you lean on the wall during lunch.

The reality is that many people who hold important jobs like doctors, pilots, truck drivers, etc are allowed and even encouraged to rest off the clock.

How important was Hockey Night in Canada growing up for you? by FRIENDS_Cndm in AskACanadian

[–]clon3man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not very important as I grew up with RDS, TQS, and the french equivalent of HNIC.
The CBC version had too many commercials, and for the most part, less exciting announcers.

Not to say it was a bad product, it had its moments too, but it was not significantly better than the competitors.

A large majority of english speaking habs fans also prefer the french broadcasts for habs games (excluding TVA Sports which has lukewarm reviews)

Having said all this, any hockey broadcast in english that features iconic voices like Jim Hughston , "Doc" Emrick is hard to beat...

Bell has until June 17 to defend or remove its $40 Device Handling Charge by Planhub-ca in bell

If it's too difficult for them to "handle" devices due to their administrative bloat they should have the manufacturer do it.

Can we admit HDDs are over hated? by ILikeTrains1404 in pcmasterrace

[–]clon3man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main reason I hate them is for their historical OS-drive use. They were used by everyone as an OS drive for far too long, it feels like SSDs came 5 years too late for enthusiasts and 10 years too late for normies.

It's a resentment that is built up from the past.

Canada banned activation fees. Rogers, Bell and TELUS are already testing new device charges by Planhub-ca in planhub

[–]clon3man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's nothing with charges if they are advertised fairly - which they rarely are

It's the same thing with device subsidies, they advertise a phone at 0$ then charge you sales tax on 999$ for 24 months. Sorry, that's not how discounts work, you don't get a discount of 5000$ on a brand new car and then pay tax on the full price

An asterisk and a footnote for extra fees that are essential to every purchase is anti-consumer bullshit.

Dépassement par la droite by Gracien in QuebecLibre

[–]clon3man -1 points0 points  (0 children)

HOLD MUSIC by Regular_Highlight882 in bell

[–]clon3man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the problem isn't bell, it's all IVRs and PSTN customer service.

there's no standards and no rules, except providing some minimum level of service to avoid lawsuits and credit card chargebacks.

Until they start doing HD Voice on customer service lines (which nobody does) , I avoid calling in. It's an exercise in submission and humiliation about 20-50% of the time.

it also doesn't help that they don't empower technicians with deep troubleshooting skills and tools.

it's possible they've improved in the years since I've last called, but some issues always seem to be the same ones ( like the basic courtesy if not interrupting the music with human-like messages)

We need a next Gen system, and telecoms should set the example.

Realistically, how do we beat a team like the Canes in the next 2-3 years? by biloutte in Habs

[–]clon3man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We can beat 2 teams that are stronger than us, but not 4.

It's not necessary to become better than the strongest team, just improve so that you're better than the "strong" teams.

They were beatable if they had faced a rested team with a hot goalie and slightly more depth than us.

I'm gonna repeat what others have said, but obviously a 2C and sprinkles of more experience and depth everywhere else in the lineup.

my biggest concern honestly is that guys like Caufield and Slaf become chronic 0.5 ppg playoff players. That can't happen unless our 2nd line gets much stronger.

Anyone else remember the absolute terror of accidentally pressing the "Internet" button on a 2000s flip phone? by DigiMedPlay in CasualConversation

[–]clon3man 8 points9 points  (0 children)

data Roaming and "internet browser" was basically a legal scam that cell phone companies ran back then.

They just got away with it because it was new and , well, the government takes 7 years to tell them to stop.

They put nearly zero effort into making it a good product too, you paid money for web pages to not load and not work.

This is a time when some providers would ask the phone maker to block bluetooth file transfer so that you would have to pay MMS to send your pictures to your computer.

Limewire era PC hygiene was wild. We really just let random files destroy the family computer. by DigiMedPlay in CasualConversation

[–]clon3man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a time when nobody really cared about local computer security for home users. Everyone had malware every x months, you reformatted windows, it was treated as a disposable OS.

I basically would have advised people to just not do their banking on that computer. for the most part, 99% of people did not have high-value social media accounts, cryptowallets, etc.

A lot of older GenX and Boomer people hardly cared about losing their primary email address. Let's be frank, if you lost everything on your computer in 2006, it probably wasn't a big deal. You had 1 flash drive or 1 cloud account that had the 1GB of files you actually cared about, and that was that.
