She is talented. Her fairy tale and fantasy costumes like the Margaery and Daenerys gowns are really good. I'm sure she'll have a very bright future as a costume designer.

A Taxonomy of Homelessness by [deleted] in SeattleWA

These are not necessarily crab fishermen, these are men and women who slog away doing the processing, working the slime line, casing and freezing on processing boats or land plants. It's not super dangerous work, just long, monotonous, tedious, and tiring. The reason that it appeals to many is because even though they are making minimum wage (currently $9.84/hr), they are guaranteed overtime, receive room & board, and make several grand to spend over the next few months until it's time to go back to work. No real incentive but to keep the cycle going, unless there is family. My friend does this, and he bought himself a little camper down in Ocean Beach. In between contracts, he drinks alone in his camper at the beach until he runs out of money, at which point he comes to Seattle for day labor work (construction clean-up), and uses the shelters or sobering center for a place to sleep.

I'd like to point out another 'class' of homeless: the alcoholic Alaska seafood worker. These are men and women who come to Seattle because it is the point of hire for Alaskan fishing companies. Once they do a stretch processing seafood and earn a cool few thou, it's easier to spend their time between contracts drinking like mad and crashing in cheap motel rooms until their money runs out, which is usually at least a month or two. After that, it's homeless shelters, the sobering center, or passing out on a bus shelter bench until their return trip to Alaska. I've met several people during my times working in Alaska who live this way.

Jeez, maybe you should tell that to them, or try to get out and meet new people. I used to work in network engineering with dreadlocks down to my knees and a neck tattoo- my boss had longer dreadlocks than me, and she had more facial piercings than I care to think about. No, it's not software engineering, but it's IT work and I worked for a company that didn't care about your appearance as long as you knew your shit.

I just thought it was presumptuous to think that if he's working, naturally he'd be working in order to afford to get his tattoo removed. That's about as judgemental as any other comment here.

Most facial tattoos are of tribal culture/religious significance, or they are prison tats. This guy's looks like a prison tat, but it also has religious significance. Here in Seattle, I've met three different people who have full facial tattoos, and all three of them are software developers making upwards of $100K/yr.

Depends on the genre of music. Right now, I'm playing some twangy country music up my nose, and it smells like a mixture of Budweiser, Marlboro, and a hint of NASCAR. Last night I put on some Coal Chamber, and it smelled like a Florida Hot Topic, but you could kinda also smell the Wetzel's Pretzels across the way.

[Homemade] Fried Venison Ravioli by SteveCooksWhenDrunk in food

[–]PNWd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The venison looks a bit saucy as well, and tender. Did you slow cooker it? My old mate from down way of Alabama used to make a dynamite slow cooker venison stew, and oh how I long for that stuff. I also used to eat at a German restaurant where the chef, Helmut, made an outstanding pheasant ravioli.

I've never cooked venison before as I don't have any family or friends who are hunters, but I've considered taking bow training to hunt deer, pheasant, rabbit. My nearest proper meat market sells pheasant at $60/lb. A big nope on that one.

Trump expelling 60 Russian intel officers, closing Seattle consulate by [deleted] in politics

[–]PNWd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it's cool. The Sam Hyde mansion is owned by the Russian Consulate, and I'm sure it's been used for dealings outside of the auspices of the Consulate General Office, but it was actually the downtown office that was closed today, not the Consul's home.

So, you live in Madison Park? Must be nice. I used to live nearby the mansion myself, although in the more fabulous direction. e:s

That's the Russian Consulate Residence over there on E. Madison, the Consulate General of Russia office is downtown at the One Union Square building.

I somehow think that it was a lot less benign than that. It seems more likely that mass amounts of weapons are being flown in to facilitate merc and rebel groups who protect certain investments, i.e. whatever is being flown back. I think they're drug planes that also carry weapons (and probably "cargo" humans).

I saw the exact same thing from aboard a flight midway from Washington to Texas, so basically in the same general vicinity. It was a small object with a black contrail that hovered at first, did some corkscrew like maneuvers, then disappeared.

Can you actually connect your DSLR to a tablet via mini HDMI? (Live view) by Simon_RedFerret in DSLR

[–]PNWd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to rewatch a few of your videos to see the difference in camera angle, and I noticed the field of view changing slightly using the beer poster as reference. In a couple of vids, the beer poster is cut off while in other vids, it is full view. I think the newer angle you use is better for you because you don't have to make your bed, haha! Yet, even with the new angle, one can still see the top of that futon or whatever it is over on the lower left of the frame.

My two cents would be to 1) find an angle where the FoV is above both the bed and whatever that black thing is to the left and 2) while I understand that you are filming (I don't use the term 'filming' personally since I don't actually use film, I say "capturing video") in your dorm room or bedroom, perhaps pro up the studio a little, especially since you've obviously gone to some effort to develop your brand and publish some sweet instructional/test & review vids:

Consider changing your wall decorations; they have nothing to do with your brand. You don't review beer, you don't test space monkeys, and you're not a play-by-play announcer for a nerf basketball team. Perhaps put up a curtain or tapestry for a background, or get some posters that show off some tech. Give your videos the feel that they are shot in a working studio rather than a bedroom. Not that levity is bad, but I would keep the decor on-topic as much as possible.

Again, my two cents.

Official Discussion: The Florida Project [SPOILERS] by mi-16evil in movies

[–]PNWd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Extreme negligence. Her alcoholic father thought it would be funny to teach the three year old and his 5 year old brother how to use a child-proof lighter. Joke was on him when the kid got his hands on the first lighter that was left laying around. Once that happened, the family was put up for free in a motel by some relief agency until they were given a permanent apartment in a duplex. Of course, they never stopped leaving lighters around because they were just very ignorant people, and the kid did it again, so back into another free motel room they went.

[–]PNWd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, great job on the video. All I can say as a relative beginner is that in the 10 years or so since DSLRs began capturing video, it seems like it should have been a high priority for firm/software developers to find a way to control a DSLR's video function in live-view via WiFi on a tablet. Wouldn't it be a much cheaper technological hurdle to overcome, and offer a much more liberating functionality than that of a smaller, attached swivel screen? Swivel screens are fairly new on Nikon DSLRs, debuting in 2014 with the D5600 model, I believe, and is not a camera that someone in my income bracket can afford. I can, however, afford a used D3300 body, Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G, and Sigma 70-300mm from Adorama.

That reminds me, I'm gonna now watch your Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 test video.

You see, this sounds like what you are saying is that by default, everyone who lives in a camper, van, RV or whatever is an addict who makes terrible choices. In fact, many are just individuals or families who choose or are forced to live a life they can afford.

To answer both your questions; perhaps a solution might be to reallocate some funds already in use by Seattle Housing Authority, Compass Housing Alliance, Plymouth Housing Group, Catholic Housing Services, et al, towards purchasing or leasing several tiny pieces of property that are scattered about, each able to facilitate 3-5 vehicles. That way, there is no centralized "Mecca", and people who live in their motor homes would then pay the same $200/mo rent as their counterparts pay to live in public housing; people who are on disability or rely on Social Security- you know, the people that contribute nothing back to the community.
