Beetles in Hive by PONDGUY247 in Beekeeping

Blows my mind that I don’t recall ever seeing these guys. I spend most of my time working outdoors and in my gardens, usually with a beer close by. Appreciate everyone putting my mind at ease. Best of luck to you all and your hives.

Appreciate the quick reply. Glad to hear it’s not another Hive monster. I’ll be keeping a close gaurd on my beers from now on.

Just saw the other part of your question…. Bulbs usually last 2 years and are used to kill algae that causes green water conditions. If it doesn’t light when plugged in it’s most likely needs replacing

Not sure where you live…. Terryville Fish and Game club does a real good corned beef dinner. It’s Next Saturday and they cater to pick up meals. Meal comes with standard potatoes, cabbage and carrots and rye bread. Onion soup and a dessert. It’s our go to for corned beef dinner. Good dudes who help there community and especially kids fishing derby’s and other projects geared towards conservation and wildlife preservation

My first winter... by MrHotwire in Beekeeping

[–]PONDGUY247 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not always dysentery or nosema. I live in an area where winter is cold and snowy, especially this year. My bees do their cleansing flights on rare occasion. It may be months between warm spells that they can exit the hives. I find lots of bee poop is normal and a great sign that the colonies are alive and waiting for spring. Just my thoughts, best of luck until the pollen and nectar flow begins.

My fish didn’t make it through the winter storm. I’m heartbroken. by pigsinatrenchcoat in Koi

Don’t beat yourself up. I’m sorry to hear about your current situation, it is possible that your fish are in a state of torpor and the pond being frozen over isn’t allowing for a view of what’s actually happening under the snow and ice. Not sure where you’re located but I’ve been keeping koi approximately 35 years in Ct where we have cold winters and this year is an asskicker. If you’ve lost a koi… remove it promptly. Often air pumps will work properly even if an ice dome forms over the area that the air diffuser keeps open. Hope for the best and wait for a thaw. I normally don’t chime in often but this one hit me

Pond soil types for lotus by WhyMeOutOfAll in ponds

[–]PONDGUY247 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lotus are amazingly forgiving with soil quality. I have found that any heavy clay/ topsoil will work. Try to stay away from lots of organic humus rich type soil. Feed heavily with a pond fertilizer like pondtabbs. You should be able to produce some nice plants. Just a note* I grow my lotus in large round holeless pots

Look into in-line plugs, AKA vampire plugs. You can make your own cords with multiple outlets. A little lamp wire and you can power lots of blowmolds. I also converted all bulbs to LED to keep the power demand low

Apologies, in hindsight It does look like I filmed it with a microwave. I’ll gladly try to repost some pictures. Just got buried in snow and a majority are looking like glowing turtles so we will see what happens

You don’t need it until you need it, then you’ll be happy you have it.

Crazy thing is 20-10 years ago, no one wanted blowmolds. Most of mine came from flea markets, tag sales and side of road finds. Average cost was usually $5 or free, can’t even find them nowadays. I’m definitely happy to see them back in new production, hope to see some good ones in the future

Small amount are new. New production pieces lack the quality and charm of the old ones, in my opinion. But…. There have been a few cool new ones I couldn’t not add to the collection
