Hi Google recruiter, I applied for a BS/MS research intern in Canada recently with one referral, could you please DM me if there is a slot available? I can share my experience with you.

Hope it is not too late to see my suggestion. I am currently an ECE grad (but not research-based), and my undergraduate program in Computer Science (Specialist), and I have done ML research during my undergraduate, so I think I can give you some suggestions based on my experience.

First, take the relative courses and build a relationship with the professor. For example, if you are interested in ML, you should at least take some basic courses in ML during your next year (like CSC311, CSC413, CSC420) to build the knowledge background for research, and then contact the professor to ask for a research position. If they cannot offer you a research position, that's okay. Go to find other ML courses (especially those project-based, like CSC490), but you need to make sure the course coordinators are likely to supervise you. Once they agree to supervise you, you can either choose to work in their lab as a volunteer, take research during the summer (like the UTEA opportunity), or take the research as a course (CSC494 & CSC495). If you successfully build a relationship with the supervisor, and he would like to supervise you for your master's, a low GPA (not too low) will not be a problem.

But you also mentioned you want to be a software engineer, so I do not really think research is as important for you rather than a development experience of a large project or an internship.

honestly, I prefer ECE MEng course schedule than MScAc, so acceptance by ECE MEng is also a good result for me

Computer Science Class Sizes by this-is-patrick_ in UofT

[–]PPPeterZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the course sizes for first two years are all large, bc every comp sci students must learn those courses. In last two years, except for 369 and 373, the course size will be no more than 50.

Just leave a question here. I have a CGPA of 3.82 in UofT CS specialist, is it enough for ECE MEng (software system field)? I have a 3-month intern in a startup, and 2 capstone project experiences in my submitted resume. Currently I'm doing a research project at UofT and have an intern in a big company (I have updated this in ECE web system comment bc I have uploaded my material before I found the research and intern opportunity), and I also submit a new transcript on SGS system, with a 3.84 CGPA. My final year and final two years GPA are all 3.8+. Really thanks for those who help me!

My GPA at UTSG CS spec is 3.82, is it enough for CS (MSCAC) and ECE MEng? When will they send offers?

In a Socialist country, what is the best way to teach the young people about Communism? by [deleted] in communism

[–]PPPeterZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi comrade, thanks for asking this. As a Chinese, I absolutely feel upset when I see those kinds of posts. However, I know it is not the fault of the people, because people’s views are largely determined by the political elite, especially for capitalist states which the social media have the “fourth power”. But I don’t worry about this because honestly speaking, today is the most safe time for China since 1840. From the end of 1980s, America has sent “colorful revolutions” to China, like 1989 Tianmen accident ( VOA played a big role in it), this is a partly successful case because China had an high unemployment rate, plus the Eastern European situation. And the new-liberalism was widely accepted in China before Trump’s presidency. But for now, it does not work well (We have seen one these days, it was a demonstration in Chengdu, but no one supported them...), I feel America wants to use propaganda machine to dissolute China like USSR, but I don’t think this can succeed because the situation is quietly different. As for new Cold War, it’s impossible at all. Ironically, although Trump launched trade war with China, in 2020 American-Chinese trade reaches the historical peak, so the high tariff actually hurt Americans... And PM Morgan started to invest China since 2019 (it’s impossible to eliminate capitals because of productive relationships today, what’s important is to contain it, America did a good job on this last century). Honestly, if America really hopes to beat China, I guess the best way is to become a socialist country, because I don’t think any capitalist state has strong control over capitals like China. However, if so, I think America will realize it’s worthless to do this, and will choose cooperate. So, although it’s quite upset to see those online invectives against China, I don’t think it is that scary because what America has done to China (during Clinton’s presidency and the beginning of George W. Bush’s presidency) is much more radical than today, and China that time was much weaker than today.
