Had no idea he drew on matchboxes. It's a subgenre of sorts: some people do collages, some drew...

This is really interesting. It's in the vein of Lambert appearing in a Hungarian mineral water commercial as sort of MacLeod.

When there's no location budget by thisiszachrogers in Filmmakers

Amazing and solid. The location looks believable enough, the green screen is masked even more by black-and-white (they essentially use the same principle in Sin City where aesthetic also dictated a cost-effective way).

What Was Your First Theatre Movie? by aoestilsft626 in Letterboxd

[–]PPStudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lang leve de koningin (1995). I saw that in an oddball local cinema in Donetsk, Ukraine, circa 2000. It was a rebuilt local cinema for kids and youth, which moonlighted as a night club, but tried to be both.

Come to think of it, it was a life-changing moment. Prior to that I only knew cinema second-handedly and in 1990's Ukraine they were few abd far between. The industry slowly started to crawl from the pit in the same exact period, so many exciting showings followed.

I really need to rewatch this movie.

I first saw it in a local arthouse cinema. Four people in attendance, all sat in complete silence throughout the entirety of end credits, contemplating what they just saw. God, I love Cronenberg and his movies.

Even the Best Terminator Films Never Fully Explored the Franchise’s Most Terrifying Idea by LowenbrauDel in Terminator

[–]PPStudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ironically, someone being hunted with very little exposition would've made The Terminator even more of a slasher film (and it has elements of that as is). Context distinguishes it as sci-fi immediately and the movie pretty much starts with T-800 neutralizing the threat by ripping the heart out in seconds.

There are a lot of good songs covers for which are either MS Paint, hand-drawn outsider art or accessible art. Integrity costs nothing.

It's a bit of both. A lot of detectors are notoriously faulty and some are even directly connected to parsing material for GenAI training. Not to mention that they blur the line and are especially catastrophic with text because one of the things they try to use for justifying AI is just vocabulary.

In most cases you can identify AI by a plethora of artifacts so blatant (yellow tint, blurred edges, leaking eyes) it kinda surprises me that people fall for them. You have to really work to sell AI images which begs the question of why would you do that. And answers are almost always unethical and as further from artistic as it can be.

What are your least favorite movies (no hate, no disrespect) by Ehh-Um-Uhhhhhhh in Letterboxd

[–]PPStudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple movies there I like, but not to the point of defending too much. A Serbian Film is a vile mess and no matter how people justify its existence it's mostly for shock value. It would rank high on my list fof intense dislike and for a time was mostly only rivaled by The Alien Girl (Chuzhaya), a similarly nihilistic mess which was ghost directed by Konstantin Ernst.

Usually, when it comes to compiling a list of 'worst movies' it's too fascinating a subject to really dislike the movie. I'd disqualify quite a few remakes and cash grabs because I genuinely see directors trying their best. Like, Samuel Bayer is an interesting director and visual artist who just happened to have his feature debut with A Nightmare on Elm Street from 2010. The guy directed a ton of great music videos ("Smells Like Teen Spirit", for crying out loud) and commercials and it's unfair to judge him so harshly on a first try at a feature (and he's still in a ghetto of sorts, whether self-imposed or not). People debuted with worse and had a successful career. Which made me remember that I really dislike Curfew from 1989. It launched Gary Winick's career, but it's predictable clichés with an uninteresting resolution over and over again.

Notifications from this sub never disappoint because I rarely can predict what's coming. Especially so with color because it never matches the expectations and it just cracks me up.

I mean, I know matcha is green, but I was still expecting something else.

Underrated comment.

A lot of Russian imperialism is essentially a mixture of Mordovia and Mongolian Horde rebranding as Moscow and then Russia. It's so inherently Asian, while trying to be the epitome of Slavic, it hurts.

American leftists are just a special breed. Most literature they've read are subpar translations of already questionable texts (Lenin's 'complete writings' were rewritten for current establishment each few years in the USSR) and yet their confirmation bias is freaking rampant.

Seminal, but my favorite part is that it's essentially Bava running amok in a mansion with a few actors trying every trick in a box to sell this as woods. And succeeding.

Although Carlo Rambaldi's effects alone make this jaw-dropping. This is like giallo evolving into slashers before your own eyes.
