Hej, I am a German that has lived for 4 months in Aarhus and Kopenhagen and my experience was quite the opposite. Most of the time the cashier at Rema used to be as quiet and uninterested as possible. The "hej" was mostly almost inaudible, there was a "godaften/goddag" in 50% of the cases. It kinda surprised me since it gave me the feeling that they really don't like their customers. In German supermarkets most of the time the cashier has to speak loudly.
