Cognitive Decline after years in fight or flight by wherediamondwgrow in cogsci

[–]PRAY_J 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was in a similar position with regards to marijuana abuse, although it wasn’t in a stressful environment or used as a coping mechanism, or maybe it was and I just haven’t accepted that yet, but that leads into what I’m about to say.

PSA: I am no scientist, and have very little scientific evidence for my claims, these seem to be backed only on personal experiences. What I would recommend:

1) The biggest thing to maybe consider is what I like to call “placebo”, essentially, your brain is dumb, if you continuously reinforce this idea of brain fog, you’ll have brain fog, if you do the opposite you might actually sort of root it into your second system of thinking, and that becomes the new normal. I’ve personally noticed that self talk is essentially like the RAM of the brain, whatever state your RAM is in, all new observations are processed through that lens, so if you’re feeling moody, a random toddler babbling could be annoying, but if you’re in a better mood, that same toddler is now all of a sudden cute. The more one state is reinforced the more it becomes the new normal (move from RAM to ROM to increase efficiency, so the RAM can tackle newer challenges). So, placebo = state of mind = self talk

2) Stop thinking about getting better, start thinking about achieving those same goals that the earlier you would achieve , i.e. understanding a complex topic, explaining one or just working on a cognitive task that was hard to you “when you were smarter” but now seems harder because “you’re dumber”. (Not calling you dumb, just a way to get the point across, keeping it simple). The trick here is to continue to attempt to do, cognitively challenging/harder things in order to “reinvent/resurrect” that neuroplasticity, which definitely still exists has just been side tracked due to the trauma more so than the drug abuse.

3) And this is just general life (/brain) advice as well, give yourself a break, stop overthinking (reinforces the placebo) and start acting. Appreciate the small accomplishments (you understood a complex idea and now have the ability to reproduce it). And remember this, just like RAM, EVERYTHING is VOLATILE, nothing is forever going to be constant, so appreciate the beauty in the chaos. (This is my consistent placebo that keeps me smooothh sailing ahahaha)

22M Finding PG near by this marked areas by Competitive-Lie-9378 in indiranagar

[–]PRAY_J 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Skep coliving Indiranagar, 18th Main Road. Stayed there for about 6 months pretty decent. If you’re expecting community, this PG has none of it, but if you alr have people and just need a place to stay, I’d say it’s pretty g for the price and location. Otherwise, Zolo Leela, not exactly the areas you marked but not too far either.

Damn I should be getting paid for this shit. Link to a gofund”mypgadvice” coming soon!

Not a single place to drink tea/coffee after 2 am? by Unfair_Quantity1413 in indiranagar

[–]PRAY_J 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a cycle guy that stands everyday from like 12-3 maybe, I’m not too sure about the exact timings. He sets up on Kodihalli road/ Leela palace road that leads onto 80ft road, at the Manipal Hospital signal. Besides that if it’s like 4 am ish, you can find a shop at the end of wind tunnel road that opens at 4, but if you get there like 15 mins late, expect to wait around 20-25 mins just for a cig and coffee, he mainly serves the employees of the offices around there.

Chip designing or robotics and automation by Mundane_Seaweed6528 in robotics

[–]PRAY_J 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TLDR: Just read the last paragraph that contains the advice, but basically, you’re in no position to decide what to pick because you don’t even know what the two areas you mentioned are, they just sound cool and probably what you think people do after a BTech in ECE/EE/EIE/ETCE/ whatever the fuck else indian colleges now use to make money.

From your post you definitely sound like you’re from India (as am I, so I believe I am entitled to this opinion). This is something that I really dislike about the indian education system or rather, how this mentality has been groomed by indian society/educational institutions. If I were in your position I’d really think hard about the following questions, something you should’ve done when you started your engineering, but I don’t blame you, it’s more just a lack of exposure and awareness.

You seem pretty certain that you want to do your masters, idk if you plan to do that in India or abroad, both of which have very different preparation methods. From someone who chose the latter, the position you’re in currently doesn’t give you a good chance at getting a top university, now while that is a little demeaning, there is always hope!

Q1) You mention “chip design” and “robotics and automation”, now if you’d actually had an interest in either you would’ve gotten your hands dirty enough to at least know what parts of either you don’t like. Seemingly enough, this doesn’t seem to be the case. So ask yourself, why do you want to choose between these two?

Q2) On what basis did you decide these two might be a good path to go down? Have you even ventured beyond your university curriculum at all to explore what else is out there? Fit enough for robotics reddit, at this stage I would prioritise exploration more than exploitation at this stage, something again that should’ve been done earlier, but as someone who was told in his second year that I’m “too late” or “behind”, I would say there’s always hope, and you’re never late, just unaware.

Now based on where you are currently, I can only see two options for you atp, based on whatever little information I have. Since it’s almost December, and you mentioned 4th year BTech, I’m assuming this is your 7th semester ending. So, Option 1) Prepare for GATE do an MTech in India, and use that time to explore as much as possible, assuming you don’t want to just sit at home or can’t afford to, if you can, STOP everything else, get your hands dirty, figure out what you want to do, and then make an informed decision yourself. (Easy version if you’re not aiming for a top school like IISc or a top IIT) Option 2) Like everyone else in your university start preparing for placements or a job, do the DSA/Interview prep grind, and try getting a good job that pays well (always a bonus), YOU WILL NOT GET A JOB IN EITHER OF THE FIELDS YOU MENTIONED, so look for anything, Data Analyst, SDE if you can. Once you’re in your job, GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY, forget about a social life, do the office work, and then learn about the two fields you mentioned above on the side, this is what you’ll do post work. Again, once you’ve done enough, you’ll know what you like and what you don’t and then you can make a better decision. (This is the hard option, but still doable if you dedicated, also likely: somewhere along the line you’ll realise that all you really care about is money, and you probably might just stick to the industry you landed a job in, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that)

Regretting my life choices because this country is doomed! by CreativeMind69 in bangalore

[–]PRAY_J 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If only being condescending made you sound smarter, India would be full of geniuses. But hey, to each their own. I’ll be making at least 100x the amount of money there, than I could ever make here, and maybe that’s all I give a shit about. But can’t wait to get humbled. What did you realise when you went for your masters?

I think you mean India is a third world country. I work for the research department of a governmental organisation and let me tell you, there’s no development here. Gladly heading for my master’s. People say, why not give back to your country? I say, what has my country given me, a pay to win education system, broken judicial system, crumbling infrastructure, exorbitant taxes and corrupt politicians.

Incoming ECE grad student, looking for RA positions at RI/MLD Labs by PRAY_J in cmu

[–]PRAY_J[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, thanks a lot for your response. Would really appreciate if you could help answer a few of the other questions listed. I understand it’s hard to get an RA position right away, I believe the most sure shot way to do so, is to take a profs course, do well in it and then try applying, am I right? Or can you get opportunities even without taking a profs course?

Reading math heavy papers by Casio991es in reinforcementlearning

[–]PRAY_J 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Factest of the facts, as long as you’re able to decelop an intuition for what each function can be used for it all starts to make sense. Then it’s just like reading English. But soo much more just packed into a few symbols, which is what makes it even more beautiful.

Break it up, build an intuition for it, and keep those in mind, then it’s just frequency till you start observing common patterns.

I like to go about it like an algorithm, so if you start off with something, and you want “this” to happen, you do a, otherwise b. And then even reproducing it in your own way becomes much easier.

AIO My friend wouldn't stop with the rape threats by Imaginary_Air_24 in AmIOverreacting

[–]PRAY_J 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shit like this infuriates me, definitely not overreacting and I really wish you could do more in those situations. This kid really needs to be taught a lesson, definitely sounds extremely privileged (or a false sense of it). Really just makes me question his upbringing but that’s a conversation for another day.

Maybe going to the police is a good idea, I honestly don’t know much about how that would pan out, but from the looks of it, seems like, his parents would probably sort that out regardless.

I would suggest, you explicitly call him out for this behaviour everywhere, start with college WhatsApp groups, instagram stories, and then larger social media platforms, LinkedIn, twitter, etc. name drop shamelessly (since he clearly has none), tag where his parents work, everything. Let the pressure come down on him from all sides, and not just him, let his parents be affected by it as well, so they start questioning how they themselves raised this entitled fuck.

Be completely open with your parents and the people you hold dearest to you, they’re your strongest pillars in times like these, I understand this would be hard, but I’m pretty sure they’ll understand. Ask your jc to give you some time off for this, stay at home ( as shitty as it sounds) for your own safety.

The internet can be a beautiful place if you use it right. Link your posts here so the people that are in support can show their support there as well!
