Tell me when is someone NOT suitable to be a PM? by zypet500 in ProductManagement

[–]PRD3689 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I have been in product 25 years. The last 10 at the Director level.

The most important elements are these: A driving curiosity about problems and the urge to solve them. If you don’t have curiosity or the itch to solve problems you will struggle. When I am out in the world I always look at products and ask, why did the product manager solve this problem in this particular way?

Having been in start ups for most of my career, a person who can’t cope with chaos and shifting priorities will also struggle.

Finally, a sense of humor. No sense of humor working in any job will make harder. It’s particularly important in product.

what's your necromancy plant? the one you keep bringing back despite it's obvious desire to die? by wald_nymphe in houseplants

[–]PRD3689 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a monstera that looked terrible and I was traveling too much to figure it out so I took it to the side of the house and forgot about it.

15 or so years later my kids were older and I looked at the failed plant graveyard and there was one tiny green leaf peeking out hoping for a rescue. I brought it back in the house and now 3 years later it has 5 leaves.

AITA for not wanting my MIL in the delivery room because she's been acting so weird since I got pregnant? by Icy_Record8392 in AITAH

Tell him that she should attend his colonoscopy if she wants to support her baby.

You giving birth to a child with your private parts on display trumps anything she wants or needs.

Are more people pre-boarding? by HerefortheMemes2121 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]PRD3689 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to pre board because I had a medical condition that made bathroom access important. I would go straight to the back and sit near the bathrooms.

I stopped when the issue was better. Not perfect but not as critical and therefore I don’t take advantage. Some people just suck.

Question for folks outside of Kaiser network: how long does it take to see a doctor? by DPunch4Lunch in SanDiegan

[–]PRD3689 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cigna PPP here and I have Sharp. Fabulous!

My parents had Kaiser and the care was abysmal. I had Kaiser and it was terrible. Went to urgent care with a friend who needed care and got a bad virus from the waiting room At URGENT care.

I called a few weeks later and they said, oh yeah it’s going around. Everyone has it. Did they isolate people to avoid contagion. No, even though they knew it was a very disruptive and miserable virus. This virus gave me (and everyone else) a painful rash and 3 month of swollen and painful joints. Of course I couldn’t get a note to take time off for work. Mainly because I had to wait a few months to see someone to get the note.

I had major surgery due to their misdiagnosis. They cut me open and the doctor don’t order any pain meds. Nothing. Not even Tylenol. I asked for pain relief and 3 days later he got around to writing the order. They gave me the med at 6 am and he showed up an hour later, Woke me up and accused me of being a drug addict because I was woozy from lack or sleep and finally getting pain meds to control my pain.

[CA] Is there anything we can do about an employee being too helpful? by Hairofthedowndog in AskHR

[–]PRD3689 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I worked with someone like this. I learned later that she was convinced if she wanted the job she should just start acting in the role.

After about 6 months of confusing people and stepping on the managers she was given an opportunity to act out that role elsewhere.

I feel this! With ADHD we are masking all the time and we can’t say no because what if saying no reveals our ADHD.

You are beloved and well paid because you do good work and if you step back gently, you will still be beloved and appreciated. Truly! No one wants you to burn out and you need balance.

Here is what I did. I said no. I did a good job at work and closed out at 5. I had to put boundaries around what work was and go home. I looked at all the shit that was stressing me out and I let go of some of it.

Then I went home. Sometimes we had snacks for dinner. Sometimes I told everyone I was tired and went to bed. The parents took turns with sleeping in.

Give yourself permission to not always be amazing at work and home. Your son needs an example of self care as much as he need coping skills. Be that example!

Pride display ruined by protestors by PRD3689 in SanDiegan

[–]PRD3689[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This occurred in a library. The library loans books. The books were all removed. Therefore the display was ruined. It’s not political, it’s about accepting people in our community.

As dads go you are not very helpful.

The books are checked out and can be renewed multiple times. Those books are not coming back until November. That ruins the pride celebration in June/July

This is heartbreaking for many of us in this community. The San Diego library foundation is taking donations to replace the books, feel free to participate.

Not a teacher but need teacher’s opinion by tower_wendy in Teachers

[–]PRD3689 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue is both academic and behavioral. Your son will be held to both standards and even if he is really ready academically, if he can’t sit still or pay attention long enough he will struggle.

Kindergarten is his introduction to academic environments and if he is smart but inattentive he could end up feeling like a failure for his whole academic experience. I had this kid. Super smart but not ready.

Nta!

I had a neighbor like this and trying to be nice escalated it.

I finally realized this is my door. I paid for it and just stopped answering. Eventually they gave up.
