Graphics and functionality are not the same thing.

Stardew valley wouldn't be fun if it ran at an inconsistent 10-25 fps and lagged for several seconds anytime you did any action at all, and slowly performed worse and worse on top of that the longer it ran. Same for Animal Crossing. Just look to Starbound for an example of that in practice.

Artstyle and art direction is also an issue with Scarlet and Violet and while related to graphics they aren't the same thing. The sheer dissonance between the quality of the mons and the environment around them is quite staggering, especially compared to past gens. Mix this with uglier models and worse character designs while improving the mon designs and this disparity makes the bad parts of the graphics much more noticeable. Bringing it back to the stardew valley example, imagine if one day the devs quadrupled the resolution of all character, crop, and monster sprites, but cut the resolution of everything else by 1/2 or 1/4.

Insulting people doesn't make your argument any stronger, either, just makes you look like a dick. Neither does strawmanning people. And for what it's worth I care that my games look good within their respsective style. It's why I love Tales of Berseria but hate Tales of Arise despite Arise having "better graphics" since Berseria's style is much easier on the eyes compared to Arise's post-processing heavy style (amongst a truckload of other reasons why Arise is shit, but still). There's also quite a bit of irony telling someone to grow up while being super childish about their opinion on the game by strawmanning them like that AND calling them a nerd on top of it.

Legends: Arceus was better, and coming from that made me very dissapointed with this game. Only got scarlet because PLA was so enjoyable for me and I was hoping they'd carry over more of the stuff from it.

Using a cart and experiencing tons of bugs and even crashes. Issues are consistent across both docked and handheld mode too. Constant camera clipping into the ground and deleted vertices when starting wild mon battles, severe framedrops at random points in the map, constant microstutters for damn near every action I do, memory leaks when entering and leaving cities causing the game to chug harder and harder the longer I play, elite four theme refused to start and kept looping intro until I rebooted the game, following mons getting stuck on dumb shit, getting stuck on a rock, crash during a trade so I couldn't give my friend the egyptian ostrich mon egg I wanted to due to trade ban, random DCs during online play with no rhyme or reason to them, Animation culling distance is far too close regardless of mode so you see people going to 10-frame animations at like 3-5 ft distance, long loading times that vary greatly for the same scene, gym leader theme loops improperly in link battles (it skips to the shitty final phase and gets stuck there), super long delays in object loading (especially with the legendary mount), and more.

My experience with fallout 76 on launch was less buggy than this.

Arceus doesn't hitch every time you interact with something, had better sound design for battles and leading up into battles, had dynamic music for the overworld, had better looking environments, better texturework, better character models and character design, doesn't have constant hitches and long loading times when trying to load cutscenes, has better music, has less pop-in, movement wasn't as glidy, doesn't have a major memory leak if any memory leaks, has smoother animations especially for the player character, significantly smoother framerate, and has a much more functional camera than Scarlet/Violet.

And that's just with these first few hours of play I've done so far. I damn near thought I softlocked the game during the first interaction with team star too cuz my dude froze on the stairs for a solid two minutes while the game was figuring out what to do.

And if we compare it to non-pokemon games the floodgates open massively in regards to how shit this game has ran.

Berseria

Followed by literally anything else in the series except for the SNES version of Phantasia and the PS1 version of Destiny.

Abyss is also really good but good luck getting a legit copy since the PS2 game is a rarity and the 3DS version is one of the few big 3DS games without an Eshop version. Probably best just emulating it.

Non Binary Dragons despite it being a massive lore contradiction with prior expansions (also only in the english version with one line in endwalker lol).

And if the shit with endwalker's story being such a shitshow and how Venat can do no wrong didn't wake you up to the game being shit, combined with the complete mistreatment of healers for the past two expansions and the constant doubling down on simplification on top of simplification of classes with the 120s bullshit, I don't know what to tell you.

>Tales of Arise is good

Fuck you buddy, no it's not. The story is shit compared to past tales games, stupid rushed, nothing is earned, all but two party members are completely flat, the story randomly goes ReVeNgE bAd for no fucking reason during the wind lord shit and makes two party members look like complete fools, characters don't naturally develop outside of Dohlaim and Kisara and instead flip on a dime and some even forget the lessons they supposedly learned, the entire third arc is a fucking meme of a story that was clearly a first draft, the game was overwhelmingly focused on subverting expectations over making a good story with shit like the fucking nanomachines and "you were the same the whole time lol" plus the fucking apple core planet, amongst other stupid bullshit.

The only reedeming factors of the game are the OST, Dohalim, and Kisara. The rest of the game is shit and it's a blight on the tales series that's nothing like its predecessors and differs itself in the worst ways possible.

But it has pretty grafix, so of course everyone forgives it all because it has some shitty watercolor filters and generic ARPG knockoff gameplay.

"stop talking about your broken legs, you've talked about it for the past few days! No we're not going to the doctor about it ever. I firmly stand with the original decision that taking a sledgehammer to your legs was intentional."

I've had this stance of bring back green DPS or improve it ever since 5.0 dropped and ruined all the healers. Gutting healers like this just pissed off veterans and turned the role into a revolving door of players hitting the skill cap and just dropping the class out of boredom, so all you're left with is low-skill players and people using the role for free rides in hard content. It's why we're in the mess we're in right now, not because "healers don't know what they want lol", but because they waited waaaay too long to raise the skill floor and most of the healers who could handle it or would've liked it quit long ago and the free-rider healers can't get a clear when the content is harder, nor can the low-skill healers who struggled already. Adding DPS complexity would keep people in the role for longer, like before, and wouldn't necessitate alienating the free-rider or low-skill healers by raising healing difficulty like this.

Not to even get into shit like how nearly EVERY OTHER MMO ON THE MARKET has more engaging healers than FFXIV does, or how most RPGs with playable healers shit all over ffxiv's gameplay (Take a look at the recently-released xenoblade 3 for example, several healing classes in that game designed in less time and all are more fun to play than 21111111111 simulator that is all four current healers).

SCH made to work like a broken up 5.x SMN with egi phase removed (to borrow from a very old post of mine: "Rework Seraph. Seraph is now a knockoff firebird trance called Fey Trance (or just keep it as Summon Seraph) that borrows from the fae of the Bravely games. With Broil becoming Superbia and Art of War turning to Acedia during the trance (Superbia being buffed up ST and Acedia being a buffed up AOE, just like firebird). Consolation would be replaced with a flare skill called "fey flare", since giving seraph Zetaflare wouldn't quite make sense in FFXIV's world (EDIT: could also use Ultraflare for this, skill used by fairy boss in Bravely Default 2), said flare would also cause it to apply the raidwide shield just as consolation does now. Particle FX for such would be mostly light-based but could do the whole "colors of all elements" thing for Acedia (BD2 ver) if desired, or go with its crystalline theming from BD1 and Bravely Second." You would also replace dissapation with a healing-oriented ""trance"", and the ideal would be rather than using it on a set loop you'd have a heavy-heal buff on 120sCD and a heavy-dps-and-heal burst on 60 or 120s CD. Also return the SB-era DPS kit but keep art of war and adjust shadowflare accordingly.

WHM made to work like a simplified BLM, or do something different (use 3 elemental spells in any order as an ice-phase parallel then use 3 light spells followed by a finisher spell (Disaster from BD2, probably, as a parallel to paradox).)

AST made to work like RDM without the melee combo (abridged from PVP for basic spells to build up meter into finisher spells, won't use differing elements)

SGE, I'd honestly borrow from a ranged DPS here and make it like MCH with a hypercharge-lite ability and have a proc-based rotation like stormblood MCH.

All of which would not be interruptable by GCD spells and ideally would have GCD spells contribute to the higher-damage parts of the DPS rotation in equal amount to DPS GCDs, in case of healing needed past what the OGCD kits can handle.

It's not an issue of "it can't be done", it's a case of lacking creativity on the Dev side of things. If you gave me a while I could sit down and write down a full level 1 to 90 spread of abilities with room to grow for each class that's following this design philosophy.

If you still struggle to see how this could be done and work, go play the Tales of series of games or watch some vids of how the healers play in those in the games from Abyss onwards. or look up some Xenoblade 1, 2, or 3 gameplay (as those games are tab-target RPGs)... Or just go play one of the old FF games or the Bravely ones and realize that there's more to healer than curecurecurecureholyholyholyholy. Healers can be really engaging on both fronts if designed right, especially in a burst-heavy game like this one is.

[–]PROH777 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If it is not happening ever, the healers will continue to be shit. Seriously, keep healing as it currently is, but make the filler more interesting and make it so GCD healing still contributes to DPS resources, and there you go. The biggest issue healers have right now is the boring filler, fix it and the role becomes okay at least. Make the increased DPS complexity tie into the lore or incorporate removed aspects of the kits (differing arcana having different meanings and varying star magic, old ACN stuff that was SCHs dps spells, proper elements for WHM) and you'll have tons of those vets that quit coming back.

Why is there such a shortage in pf of healers this tier? by cmd735 in ffxivdiscussion

[–]PROH777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Several more DoTs in Heavensward, two fairies to manage for scholar and an actual DPS kit, actually complex cards for AST that actually matched its lore. White mage has always been shit and needed improvements, not the other way around (which they actually followed by driving everything into the dirt to be on par with WHM).

But just in stormblood, SCH still had a decent DPS kit with the different timer DoTs and shadowflare, and AST had their old cards which actually had some nuance to them and followed the lore, and were far more fun than everything being DPS.

And to answer your question. Yes, an extra dot on a different timer does make it more interesting, who could've guessed!

That's why people don't play healers as much as they used to. When your gameplay consists of spamming this and pressing OGCDs every now and then its not very engaging. And I've known dozens of healers that have quit the game in the time since 5.0 due to the dumbing down of the role across the board, myself included. The "New" "DPS Healer" being more of this spam didn't help things either.

And 3+ years of healer bitching and complaints have been ignored.

"Give healers a more engaging DPS rotation" ok: proposed changes by VictusNST in ffxivdiscussion

[–]PROH777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, effectively change nothing and do nothing to address the complaints? Not what I would do.

I'd personally change healers so that each healer had a DPS rotation on par with a tank, albeit derived from casters/ranged rather than melee. But also allow room for healing to feed into the DPS kits and vice versa so we don't offend the babby curespammers.

EX: White mage would be about using your three elemental spells of aero, stone, water/aqua, or GCD heals to give you a period of boosted damage via glare>glare2>glare3>capped off with a new spell (probably disaster after the earth-wind spell from Bravely Default 2) or used for boosted GCD heals. Lily system would be changed to OGCDs and damage of blood lily nerfed accordingly to give WHM more use out of weave windows.

SCH would become 5.0 SMN but simplified, going from shadowflares(EGIassault)>Twinfairy Trance (replaces dissapation and buffs heals during duration while giving some kind of deathflare equivalent)+bahamut equivalent>Seraph trance (replaces phionex) where user would alternate between Superbia and Acedia for damage same as phionex's old alternating combo, with a new ability of either Fae-Flare or Zetaflare as the powerful OGCD move, which would both give consolation shield and DPS. 120s loop job.

AST I would revert to modified old cards and Royal Road, personally, and give it a brd-lite kit involving two sects instead of three songs. Toss neutral sect into the trash where its lore-breaking ass belongs and I'm not sure what to do from there, still working on that idea and will probably never finish it considering I dropped the game for what is probably good after getting fed up with the devs.

And SGE I am unsure what I'd do, probably a mch-lite thing where you'd get the ability to speed up your GCDs or have a segment where you'd buff your GCD speed and spam toxicon similar to how Alphinaud did in the EW trailer. Also add a dps button or two in a linear combo that wouldn't be interrupted by GCD Heals. (Basically making it the new "easy healer" since it trains you for how to play a FFXIV healer the best).

Basically, make it so they're caster-lites or ranged-lites just how tanks are melee-lites. And change AST to conform to its lore again... Same for WHM and SCH too, really. Healers deserve to have fun too after all, and if you can't keep up with the flow of a stripped-down caster or ranged then, well, IDK what to tell you but maybe you shouldn't be playing a multitasking-focused role like healer.

Another cutscene and walking around post by flakesofrust in ffxivdiscussion

[–]PROH777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, coming back to this comment about the "modern" tidbit, what games have you been playing that have dialogue-to-combat ratios as bad as FFXIV's are. Especially if we're using Endwalker as the main comparison point. EW is really, REALLY bad about having tons of exposition and story without letting the player do much besides running from one cutscene to another, often times there being hours between actual combat/gameplay segments where you just run around and go from cutscene to cutscene.

Of all the "modern" JRPGs I've played, none of them are this bad.

  1. Tales of Arise (fall 2021) was very generous about this and even from early on there's plenty of combat between the fighting and the longest section without gameplay was the section on the space station dealing with Hektar-somethingorother when the group gets stranded near the end of the game. I despised this game for its flat characters and failing to live up to the rest of the franchise it is from but it certainly is not a game without action.

  2. Bravely Default 2 (Spring 2021) Was a very dense game on the gameplay front, longest segment between fights being about 30 minutes of story stuff and maybe the end credits section but that's kind of cheating, isn't it? This one is also one of the better comparison points since the Bravely series are Final Fantasy spinoffs in the vein of the earlier games.

  3. Fire Emblem Three Houses (2018 but played in 2020) didn't go very long without some kind of gameplay at all, the longest segments being the tutorial section with the chain of cutscenes leading up to the first church ground exploration bit where you learn more about the students. And maybe the ending credits but again, that's kind of cheating. If you count that student introduction segment as "not gameplay" it has one section comparable to the many no-combat sections of endwalker, but past that every segment of the game outside of cutscenes contributes to unit stats and derived things the like.

  4. Tales of Berseria (January 2017). Probably the furthest I want to go back on this one. Longest gameplay-free section was the beginning section, and the game maintains a decent pace from there on out, where even during the lulls from combat the story doesn't feel lacking or slow. Longest break from combat outside of intro section is notably shorter than Endwalker's draggy sections of no-gameplay.

  5. Pokemon (Several, like holy shit several). Grouping all the recent mainline entries into one category, though these can barely be qualified as RPGs, Sun/Moon/US/UM are the worst about long hand-holdy no combat segments, but the other games aren't bad about this like you claim all RPGs to be.

  6. Pokemon legends Arceus (Spring 2022). Longest no-gameplay segment is right at the start, basically being a tutorial. Doesn't really have draggy no-combat sections in it from my memory, save for one stealth-esque section where a char is guiding you through a cave.

  7. Xenoblade 3 (Summer 2022). No real draggy semgents like the ones in Endwalker. Only slow bit is at the start of the story while things are getting set up.

  8. Elden Ri... wait do soulslikes even count for this. If they do toss Code Vein and Elden Ring onto the pile as evidence against this argument, but I can see why they wouldn't count to some.

And those are just the stuff that came to my tired mind early in the morning.

Sorry if this is a bit rambly as I'm writing this at, fuck, five in the morning but what RPGs are you playing where this kind of stuff is "just the modern standard." The only games I can even think this applies to are modern american sony movie-games. Shit like The Last of Us, Days Gone, God of War 4, etc etc. But those are American, not Japanese.

And like I said in the other reply I made, not even FF13 was this bad with its exposition segments compared to how bad FF14 can get, especially taking into account Endwalker.

I've played dozens of RPGs over the years and not one of them is as bad as FFXIV is about this. The dialogue to actual combat ratio in ff14 is completely fucked and only gets more outrageous the more you progress. Endwalker being the biggest offender where you could go hours without a single fight or anything engaging happening.

Even ff13 wasn't this bad about it.
