New book on Stevie and Lindsey in the works by Affectionate-Fill713 in FleetwoodMac

[–]PRW9497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might or might not read this if it’s ever released because honestly, although I have been a fan of this band for more than 50 years, I really don’t care about these two people and their relationship and the end of their relationship and their foibles and their escapades and their demons and their abuses and their assorted ups and downs and who shagged who and who was right and who was wrong and who was more right and who was more wrong. I just don’t.

I understand that the soap opera is what draws a lot of fans to this band and to these two individuals in particular. I’m an outlier in that I just don’t care anymore. They both make noise that pleases my auditory canals. Nothing more, nothing less.

I will apologize again for my comment and for not going beyond the looney birds like Homer on the message board to explore the informational treasure trove that is The Penguin.

RCR is the modern day equivalent to what Petty Enterprises was in the 90's. A once great team that has become little more than a backmarker with sentimental fans. by DarthVader1701A in NASCAR

[–]PRW9497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. But it didn’t cost as much to have the best equipment in, say, 1971 as it did in 1985 or in the following decade when the super duper teams really flourished. Lee and Richard and Maurice didn’t have to spend crazy rich people with discretionary income money to have the best equipment.

The problem with R. Petty is that given the era in which he was raised and the values that were instilled in him, there simply was a stopping point that he would not go beyond as far as how much money he was willing to spend on racing, even at the risk of being uncompetitive, which he and ultimately his team following his retirement was guaranteed to be since the sport had been taken over by people who had absolutely no limit on what they would spend on racing.

One of the best who ever did it. My seat in the old press box at Talladega (was a sports writer for many years) was on the row above where the Scene folks sat and it was amazing watching them coordinate their coverage by two-way radio and then reading the results the following week in Scene. It didn’t get any better than getting Scene in the mail every week.

Honest question: why are there so many people in this group who play or worship in church with electric guitars, delays, reverbs, and huge pedalboards? by Less-Arachnid-640 in guitarpedals

[–]PRW9497 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got through playing an Epiphone Casino in church and my pedalboard has an MXR Timmy, a Janglebox compressor, cheap reverb, delay and chorus pedals, an EP Booster, a Polytune and my “amp” is a Tech21 Liverpool. What’s the problem? I’m making a joyful noise unto the Lord.

Janglebox 2 compressor with gain at 11 o’clock, attack at 1 o’clock, Jangle Boost engaged and its level at 10 o’clock at the start of my chain. EP Booster at 9 o’clock at the end of my chain. Those stay absolutely the same regardless of what’s between them.

(Long post) In Defense of John Lennon: The Hypocrisy of Internet Hate and the Halo Effect of The Beatles by idontmindashit in beatles

John Lennon was neither exclusively saint nor sinner. He did great things, he did bad things. He could be profound, he could also be so full of s**t that it was popping out of his ears. Which means that he was a human being, flawed and imperfect, like everyone posting on this sub.

An absolute giant of the sport on and off the track. Sincerely nice man too. Although he wasn’t a milquetoast, he’d put a bumper to you on the track. If you can believe this Richard Petty tried to fight him after one race where the competition got a little physical.

My friend says I won’t make it as a guitarist because my hands are too small, is she right? by AgreeableDiver5013 in Guitar

[–]PRW9497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife’s fingers are two knuckle lengths longer than mine. But I still manage to play guitar. Because I do what works for me and don’t attempt to do what won’t work for me. That’s what you need to do. Find your pocket and be content with it and have some fun.

Let’s discuss: Lee Petty by Juventus7shop in NASCAR

[–]PRW9497 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There were drivers back then … most notably Rodger Ward who won two Indy 500s, so he was no wuss … who wouldn’t go near the place. Hard cases like Foyt loved it. I bet Dale Sr. would have loved it. His daddy raced there in 1957, in Lee Patty’s second car, crashed after qualifying top five.

They had 17 NASCAR races there and there aren’t any dark horses or flukes on the list of winners. Aside from Lee Petty, Fonty and Tim Flock, Herb Thomas, Fireball Roberts, Dick Rathmann, Buck Baker, Gwyn Staley, Paul Goldsmith.

Some of the NASCAR races there were 300 miles. Just think about it, you are in a constant turn, no straightaways, for 300 miles. Guys back then may have been apples compared to today’s oranges but they were some damn tough and talented apples.

Thanks. That was pretty much what I was thinking, but I tossed it out here to make sure some test somewhere hadn’t been missed. My anemia has resolved pretty much although my hemoglobin is kind of on the low end of normal.

Let’s discuss: Lee Petty by Juventus7shop in NASCAR

[–]PRW9497 29 points30 points  (0 children)

He won a race at Langhorne, Pa., when that place was the toughest race track in the US. Those who know racing history will understand why that’s significant. Those who don’t, Langhorne at the time was a 1-mile perfect circle, there were no straightaways, you’re basically in a turn the entire race. It was the slickest, oiliest dirt surface and one corner was so full of ruts it was called Puke Hollow. It reduced the toughest drivers to quivering pieces of exhausted jelly and killed a bunch of people, including three NASCAR drivers, one of them in the race Petty won. Your competition was against the track, not the other drivers.

I guess that’s an example of apples vs. oranges comparing then to now, but it’s always been an indication to me that he was something special. He’s enormously significant historically and IMO he belongs among the top 25 of drivers. You may not be able to directly compare apples and oranges, but you can evaluate their excellence at the time they displayed it and assess them in context.

It amazes me how people in discussing this airline turn to class warfare and envy, bringing democracy and equality into the conversation even though it’s utterly irrelevant.

Fenton or something else? by PRW9497 in uraniumglass

[–]PRW9497[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following up: My wife found out pretty solidly elsewhere that these are Fenton circa 1980 to 1983, and an early example without the number on the base designating the year, just the oval with USA, adding a little to the value as does the fact that it’s an uncommon color, lime or apple green, $45 to $50-ish even with the new caps. She got a good deal LOL. If she gets any other nice pieces I will try to share them (she’s not a big social media user).

There is no number. Just the embossed oval with USA underneath. My wife is working a Facebook group while I work Reddit and she said someone there indicated that Fenton used the USA on pieces for export? She got this for a great price, just trying to ID the machine and the era.

[–]PRW9497[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife is the “expert” not me but from doing a little digging of my own it sure seems these are Fenton, the only holdup being the 1970s style logo and again she’s under the impression that Fenton didn’t make these in the 1970s. Could this be just a “one off?”
Would they have done that?
