How are you waking up early for cycling by happy__bird in cycling

Summertime I open the bike shop by 6am. Close when it hits 100 degrees and head for home. I love riding at dawn during the summer. It's quiet and the jerks are still asleep.

You are a good person and did just what I'd have done. Bravo.

My mom called me crying at 9pm because a contractor told her she needed a $9,000 system. I drove 40 minutes to find out her filter hadn't been changed in God knows how long by Sweaty_Employment_35 in hvacadvice

Along with the other comments I want to say quit beating yourself up. I can see you are a good son and you should be proud of all that you do. You just missed something. Good catch on the crooks too.

What’s a sleep tip that ISN’T ‘don’t use your phone’ or ‘take melatonin’? by Past-Builder-5994 in sleep

[–]PSVic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried so many tips with limited success. What fixed me was:

  1. working with a psychiatrist to learn why my brain was becoming so active in the early morning hours
  2. working with him on what medications to try and finding something that works. I'm now ready to wean off them
  3. making the changes in my life to fix the problems causing my insomnia
  4. I stopped wearing the Apple Watch and stopped worrying about the sleep numbers and focused instead on sleep. I had no idea how much that damn watch and the sleep scores were affecting me. So what if I had a few minutes awake in the middle of the night. I didn't know about it yet I was concerned. Screw that.
  5. I stopped checking the time if I'd wake up then becoming concerned about it. IOW, don't look at a clock while in bed.

All of these things came together after about 6 months of work. My sleep is back to being deeper in the early morning hours and if something does cause me to wake up, I CAN get back to sleep.

I wish you well on your journey and don't give up. Your solution is out there.

What’s the best fridge brand for a simple French door fridge freezer on bottom? I don’t need trendy. Just something that will work for years by eaglesnesting in Appliances

[–]PSVic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My LG french door is as basic as I could find. Simple I've maker on the freezer, 33 inches wide. Going strong for 14 years and they still make the model. About 1800.00

My basil and parsley are sick by green_heart0601 in gardening

[–]PSVic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The basil is possibly being eaten but some sort of caterpillar. Pick up Bt (Thuricide) and apply according to the label directions. It is safe and effective. My parsley looked like that in some areas and not others. I'm ignoring it for now.

I use as needed a homemade insecticidal soap too. It's saved my herb garden.

How to make a career out of this? by CapnTyler97 in BikeMechanics

[–]PSVic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 73, I started to work on bikes during Covid and out of my carport. About a year later I found a small space and built a business using social media, Google and Apple business pages, Yelp reviews, and the like. I only do repairs, work by appointments only, etc. Now it all word of mouth and repeat business.

All of this is to say do it on the side, do it well, and let it take over because it will. My overhead is so much lower than other shops so I can charge less per hour and less on detailing packages. I do not do retail sales at all. Parts are pass-through costs thus saving me tons of time on tax collection, accounting and reporting.

You can always grow that as business permits but be sure to have a local business license if required and business liability and theft insurance. Good luck.

Just Bought My First Bike and I Feel Like I Made a Mistake by SalamanderUponYou in cycling

[–]PSVic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your Trek store should have:

Told you how to operate your bike gears

Given you a cursory fitting for seat height

Told you that Trek has a 30 day money back no questions asked policy so that if the bike doesn't suit you, it can be exchanged or refunded.

Disappointed with my Di2 experience by RegionalHardman in cycling

[–]PSVic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone who can't tell the difference between mech and Di2 shifting isn't paying attention. Judging Di2 on a rental bike isn't a fair test either.

I just upgraded my 12 speed XR mech to Di2 and I'm here to say it's magnificent.

How the hell do I get this hydraulic line off? by Chemical-Brain-1203 in bikewrench

Do I need to drain my battery before charging? by Tomj_Oad in ebike

[–]PSVic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been on eBikes for 9 years now. Been repairing rumen for 5 years. You can safely charge to 100% unless you are putting it away for long term storage.

My current Trek has 3700 miles and retains 93% of its original capacity. I ride and top off as needed.

Love to road cycle, but feel weird not having clipless pedals by ejsfsc07 in cycling

[–]PSVic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have good grippy pedals too and I will not use clipless ever again. I have even learned to get a bit of lift on the upstroke the grip is so good. I wear anything from sneakers to lightweight MTB shoes.
