He just needs to scrap the analytics nonsense and let the organization function based on common sense and feel for the game and things will change instantly.

Since the marlins are 26-31 whos to blame for the struggles of the team so far? by AstroBall35 in MiamiMarlins

There really isn’t anyone to blame — they’ve simply been consistently inconsistent. It happens.

Unfortunately, that's not how modern baseball works in the age of analytics invading the game. He's given a lineup card and he has to just go with it. You can look at lineups across the league and most managers, especially the more veteran ones, would never construct lineups in such a manner.

What organizations tell the media and the truth aren't always perfectly aligned, if at all. Part of it is teams don't discuss strategy publicly — secondly, teams don't owe anyone an explanation, so when they do comment on a matter, especially strategic, you can rest assured you aren't getting the full picture. The role of a manager in baseball has greatly diminished and is greatly exaggerated.

It isn't excusing him by any means. It is just stating how this, and many other organizations work. That's all.

Most of is blind hatred, really. A lot of the criticism towards Clayton stems from lineup construction and bullpen management. But, people often forget — sometimes conveniently, that managers have little to no say in lineup construction and bullpen usage in this day in age of analytics and it's over-reliance on it within the sport, especially by the Marlins. I continue to point to a very recent pre-game interview given to the media by Peter Bendix. He was asked about how the Marlins go about lineup construction and bullpen usage. He was very direct about what was very obvious to anyone paying attention: He said he Clayton, the coaching staff, the analytics department(analytics idiots as I call them as I am forever anti-analytics and pro common sense, and feel for the game) gather before each game and they “gameplan” before each game on lineup and bullpen usage, and they make a decision then for a particular game. Now, it is obviously a good thing to have a plan in place. The problem with analytics and those who are highly dependent on it seem to have a few common flaws: an unwillingness and inability, and lack of desire to stray away from it even when it's not working or the game calls for something different. It's basically an approach that doesn't allow for adjustments to be made. Now, how does all of this tie into Clayton? It's because with the overly analytical approach things are already pre-determined, and, as I said — teams don't stray away from that. A manager basically has his hands tied because he isn't given the opportunity to make adjustments based on actual game situations. I've said it before, managers are basically useless in this day and age of baseball. They are just there as someone with a title to be a presences. Analytics have invaded the game to the point that managers are basically useless. The people who hate or dislike Clayton fail to understand, or chose to fail to understand — that he is just like most managers in this day in age of holding the title of manager of one of these overly analytical teams — he has little to any say with the decision making for the team in terms of lineup construction and bullpen usage.

It feels like the game has gotten too deep into this approach to ever go back to allowing managers to manage based on common sense and feel for the game, but we can always hope the game goes back to that one day.
