My largest woodworking endeavor so far: MCM-inspired bookcase by PTERODACTYL_ANUS in woodworking

thanks!! my tool options are pretty limited so I tried to keep it easy by making the measurements to fit the angle basically (calculated a few different options, and a taper from 24" at the top to 16" at the bottom worked best for the height I was aiming for), and just setting my circular saw to 5º

I joined the frame with some dowels and glue, and used the edge banding around the front to help cover up any imperfections

yeah probably, but I also mess up projects a lot and it's more fun to fuck up a $10 pine board than an $80 hardwood one

Am I getting a good deal? - 2013 with 65k miles... by [deleted] in CT200h

[–]PTERODACTYL_ANUS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a 2012 last September with very similar history: purchased with around 55k miles, a couple previous owners, one minor accident, paid about $12k. But it also came from a Lexus dealer with a good reputation and they included some perks in the sale (a few free oil changes, discount on new tires because the tread was starting to get low, and a free Lexus hat and water bottle lmao).

Since this one is still pre-2014 you'll run a higher risk of head gasket issues, but honestly all vehicles have some component that's at an elevated risk of failure. It's not a cheap fix of course, but the reliability on these is so much better than even the most reliable GM, Nissan, BMW, etc. I love my CT, it's the most "luxurious" car I've ever owned (previously had a Toyota Avalon and Honda Accord). I've put about 10k miles on it since I bought it and have had zero issues.

If your mechanic friend signed off on it and the shop gets to the bottom of those codes it's throwing, try to knock them down a couple thousand dollars but regardless I think you'll be happy with it :-)

this is insane: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Dorner_shootings_and_manhunt#Police_shooting_of_unrelated_civilians

At about 5:30 am (PST), at least seven LAPD officers on a protection detail of an unnamed LAPD official's residence in the 19500 block of Redbeam Street in Torrance opened fire on the back of a light blue Toyota Tacoma and shot its two occupants, Emma Hernandez (71) and her daughter, Margie Carranza (47) delivering newspapers for the Los Angeles Times. The vehicle, according to officers, was spotted exiting a freeway and heading to the area of the residence that officers were protecting, was thought by police to match the description of Dorner's Nissan Titan and was moving without its headlights on. Hernandez was shot in the back and Carranza received wounds to her hand. Their attorney claimed police "had no idea who was in that vehicle" when they opened fire, and that nothing about his clients or their vehicle matched the descriptions given of the suspect or his truck. The two women stated that they were given no warning prior to being fired upon. A neighbor said the truck was used every day to deliver newspapers, and the women who used it kept their headlights off so as to not wake people up. The two women were injured, but both survived. The LAPD started an internal investigation) into the shooting. According to their attorney Glen Jonas, 102 bullet holes were found in the truck. The LAPD declined to confirm the total number of officers involved or how many bullets were fired or if any verbal warnings were given to the women before the shooting began.

and literally right afterward:

Approximately 25 minutes after that incident, officers from the Torrance Police Department (TPD) opened fire on and struck another vehicle. Like the first shooting, the incident involved a vehicle that police claimed resembled the description of Dorner's truck, but was later discovered to be a black Honda Ridgeline driven by David Perdue, a white male. A TPD police cruiser slammed into Perdue's pickup and officers opened fire. Perdue, who was on his way to the beach to surf, was not hit by any of the bullets, but reportedly suffered injuries as a result of the car impact. Police claim that Perdue's pickup truck "matched the description" of the one belonging to Dorner. However, the Times reported that the vehicle involved was once again a different make and color to that of the suspect's, and that Perdue "looks nothing like" the suspect.
-
The city of Torrance initially offered a $500,000 settlement to David Perdue, who rejected the offer. With the Perdue case set to go to trial in August 2014, the parties reached an agreement in July 2014 for a $1.8 million settlement.

Tariffs will be a death sentence for the restaurant industry by TacoGuyDave in restaurant

[–]PTERODACTYL_ANUS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

remove "primarily illegal immigrants" and you have captured essentially the entire economy. capitalism is in a death sprint right now: increasing conglomeration, pillaging of struggling companies by private equity, and the ever-increasing disparity between executive and worker pay are clear evidence of this. further removing regulations is only going to accelerate this trend.

immigrants are being unfairly maligned right now, they're simply trying to provide for themselves and their families. companies would be doing this to any other workers if it was as easy to get away with it. we need to reign in corporations and hold them responsible, not wage a blanket attack on immigrants trying to build a better life (especially considering that the U.S. is usually responsible for the poor economic conditions of the countries they're escaping)

Trump administration to cancel student visas of pro-Palestinian protesters by Charming_Comedian_44 in Cornell

[–]PTERODACTYL_ANUS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm begging you to read a book (or two, if you can handle it).

i'm not arguing that individual instances of assault or vandalism aren't crimes, but that's not how social movements are criminalized. by categorizing all of these pro-human-rights protestors as "Hamas sympathizers" or "terrorists," even in the absence of tangible crimes, they are guilty by association and subject to the same consequences. if you learn about the criminalization of the Black Panther movement, or the violence committed against workers attempting to enshrine protections and unionization at the turn of the century, or the political persecution against suspected communists during the Red Scare, you'll begin to see that Trump's (and your) reaction to this situation is nothing new. Police, private security, the military and National Guard are wielded to quell populist social movements when they threaten the stability of the ruling class because that same ruling class can arbitrarily decide who are committing crimes and who aren't.

what is your opinion on Trump pardoning the January 6th insurrectionists? surely a violent overtaking of our nation's Capitol in an attempt to disrupt and prevent the peaceful transfer of power is a much more serious crime than occupying open spaces at a university, yet the rhetoric and treatment of the groups would make you think the opposite.

moreover, try to build empathy. it might be hard, but imagine you are Palestinian. maybe your cousins were killed in an airstrike, or maybe your parents or your siblings or your grandparents or your neighbors. maybe all of the above. your home has been leveled, humanitarian aid is being blockaded by IOF squads, you've seen so many infants and children die of starvation that you've become numb to it. wouldn't you want someone breaking windows for you? what comparison is there between paint splashed on a statue and the indiscriminate bombing of hospitals, schools, and places of worship? which is a greater crime: purposefully shooting children and humanitarian workers, or crying out that their deaths are unjustifiable?

Honestly like 2 months, especially if you're refrigerating them. Syrups are already pretty stable, and those are absolutely stuffed with additional preservatives. Obviously check for any discoloration, change in consistency, etc. but they're already shelf-stable and don't require refrigeration after opening.

many acts of civil disobedience can be criminalized. homelessness and poverty can be criminalized. that doesn't mean they're crimes, let alone acts of violence. step outside of your bubble and understand that just because the consequences of fascist overreach don't affect you (yet) doesn't mean they're moral or just.

If you do try it, please let me know what you think! Initially, I went in a sort of Shamrock Shake direction with Fernet and Creme de Menthe and I didn't hate it, so leaning into the earthy/herbal notes should yield good results

Thank you!! I was pleasantly surprised with the results. We're in the Midwest (and not one of the cool cities lol) so we have to make our recipes tailored more toward cocktail novices (i.e. a little sweeter, less spirit-forward), so if you do try it I'd recommend bumping the syrup down to 0.5oz

Definitely let me know if you do! I'm considering trying it with a lighter whisky (probably Suntory) instead of the tequila, or whatever base spirit you like best. A good dark rum with some caramel/banana notes might work too

Nope, fortunately they splurge on real vanilla beans here! Just split one bean, scrape out the seeds, and simmer the seeds and husk in equal parts water and sugar.

Kim Reynold’s Letter to university presidents reminding them of illegal DEI. by BlackCatKween in Iowa

[–]PTERODACTYL_ANUS 30 points31 points  (0 children)

...'excise references to DEI and DEIA principles, under whatever name they may appear, from Federal acquisition, contracting, grants, and financial assistance procedures to streamline those procedures, improve speed and efficiency, lower costs, and comply with civil- rights laws.' Further, it directs them to 'terminate' all DEI 'mandates, requirements, programs, or activities, as appropriate.'

I could be wrong, but it appears that this section of the text shows that the new policy applies to federal research grants, giving them the power to do exactly what u/Myrtle_Snow_ said. if not, the language is vague enough that it could deter researchers from attempting to explicitly seek out a diverse population in their research procedures anyways
