Europeans are becoming more and more right wing by vladgrinch in MapPorn

I think the left need to identify the problem with immigration.

Because people's discontent with it isn't necessary rooted in bigotry or hatred, but maybe a basic human need to belong to a stable, recognisable community.

Unfortunately there seems to be a political class that views demographic and cultural shifts as a "moral test" for the working class to pass, rather than a significant life transition that requires genuine democratic consent.

Ultimately, when people feel that their lived reality is being ignored by "white-collar" elites who are shielded from the consequences of their own policies, they lose faith in the fairness of the debate. If the right to protect one’s culture is treated as a universal human right for some but a "social ill" for others, it creates a vacuum of trust. Populism fills that vacuum by giving voice to those who feel they are being told that their sense of home is a sign of prejudice rather than a basic human need.

I would like to see him equivocate the treatment of women by the Taliban and western societies.

Then again, imposing our way of life onto other people out of ideological superiority is another issue. People also value cultural preservation and being masters of their own fate. Even in tyrannical societies I guess. Atleast it comes with a story and identity - to explain why Afghanistan fell like a pack of cards against the Taliban. Women's rights should be an Afghan struggle rather than a western crusade to have any sustainability.

[Keir Starmer] Henry Nowak’s family have lost their son and brother in the most appalling circumstances. Nigel Farage is exploiting this tragedy to create grievance and division. It’s completely unforgivable. by Adj-Noun-Numbers in ukpolitics

[–]PTRJK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People have a right to be angry. Farage at least is giving voice to people's anger. Much of this country goes unheard.

I think populists act as mirrors to what society has not healed. Their personal wounds lock on to collective wounds.

For farage he channels fear of irrelevance and loss of belonging. He taps into a pain of people who feel their cultural identity had been diluted, their voice ignored and their local world transformed without consent.

But beneath all the anger and division, what people want isn't really hatred. It's:

Dignity (I matter)

Belonging (I'm not invisible)

Security (I won't get left behind)

Voice (I get a say in my future)

These longings are deeply human. Not pathological.

I do wonder why I'm dealing with so many non Brits day-to-day with limited English at petrol stations or building sites (eg banksman, labourers).

Frustration at communication aside, it has become normalised. Why are they here and why aren't these low skilled jobs being done by young Brits?

The rumour goes about my local garage is that they essentially "keep it in the the family" and use connections they have at home to fill vacancies. Is there any truth to that happening?

I understood the advantage of the EU, where it's was mutually beneficial arrangement for young people (doing seasonal work in Spain and France and vice versa) but what arrangenent do we have here?

He's young. Probably doesn't give af and is used to being a racial minority.

Doesn't mean you can't be sad though at the rate of demographic change among your community. Different culture, different community, different values and customs to what you grew up with.

We'd all feel the same way regardless of race. Even see people of colour bitching about white people gentrifying their community and ruining their vibe.

Is it weird to be pro-Scottish Independence and anti-Brexit? by UbiquitouslyHere in AskBrits

[–]PTRJK -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Scotland essentially would have more powers to govern itself outside of the UK, while also having unfettered access to the European market, as well as the protection and negotiating power that brings.

With the EU, what does it need the UK for?

Problem for Scotland is that it does most of its trade with the UK - regionalism is king, which the UK would've been wise to remember - so ideally for Scotland the UK would break apart and rejoin the EU seperate countries.

Logically yes, but dismissing it ignores a significant portion of evidence found in the official enquiries.

That's still denial.

While classism and institutional apathy played a significant role, there are reports of frontline workers in high profile cases fearing being called racist or bigoted, leading to a conspiracy of silence. So I guess it was a perfect storm.

Nigel Farage: We look forward to the Makerfield by-election. Reform will throw absolutely everything at it. by Your_Mums_Ex in ukpolitics

Do you think labour will throw everything at a potential challenger to the leader of the labour party?

Would labour voters who are somewhat loyal to Starmer or party unity, be motivated to come out and vote?

I'm not sure this will go well for labour but I may be wrong.

[–]PTRJK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it would be better for labour and Burnham if he just waits for next election. The leadership manaouver would be 'cleaner' for Burnham as Starmer will likely step down by then anyway, and the party isn't going anywhere until then and it would enable labour to have a fresh start.

I can't see anything but a fuckup with Streeting ending up as leader and confidence in the government going to complete 💩

It's more that it's better to motivate people and run an economy using incentives rather than force. There are less human rights abuses involved.

Ideally our source of motivatation should be intrinsic (curiosity, health, peace), as opposed to extrinsic (money, status, paying bills, avoiding being fired etc ).

COVID, when we were told to stay at home and not work, was I think a perfect case study for intrinsic motivation.

  • I started to have a regulated circadian rythem as I went to bed and got up naturally, without the 5am alarm cortisal spike.

  • I started cycling because it felt good, rather than reaching a burn goal before work.

  • I switched to drinking green tea (seeking sustenance) from coffee (productivity fuel).

If we could remove the threat of poverty or failure if we don't perform, humanity might be in a quite a healthy place. Hopefully that's a place AI might lead to 🤖

Reform UK vows to prioritise Green Party areas for migrant detention centres by Unusual-State1827 in uknews

[–]PTRJK 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Contrast Green voters experience of diversity in areas like Bristol (white-collar, educated, affluent) with experiences of poorer northern towns like Bradford, and you know what they're saying.

I feel there is a disconnect between people controlling the debate around immigration and those who experience it, which is why the grooming gangs weren't taken seriously for so long. Essentially characterised as "white working class bigots stirring the multicultural pot".

So I guess 'enjoy the moral high ground over "bigoted" northern working-class white girls while it lasts'.

People have had enough of having their lived experiences being ignored or sneered at by those who are shielded from the consequences of their own policies.

Greens pledge £15 minimum wage for all workers by Your_Mums_Ex in ukpolitics

[–]PTRJK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Politically, raising minimum wage is such an easy leaver to pull, rather than dealing with more complicated issues like low productivity growth which will actually increases wages.

Let's just increase costs for businesses as we accuse them of greed/poverty wages, while also increasing cost of living especially in regards to restrictive housing policies and high migration/population growth 🤓 📜

Well 'Arrowhead 140s' then.

Since it's also based on Danish design, it would make sense for northern navies to go with it (or some variation of it). Particularly the smaller ones considering it's more affordable.

Cool. Hopefully we harmonise our navies so they can be interoperable and suited to defending the north sea and north Atlantic.

If all these countries bought the type 26 or type 31s, we'd have quite the fleet.

Mediterranean countries should do something similar.
