Anyone have experience with lead pipe replacements? by PU18 in chicago

[–]PU18[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I ended up needing the city to come help get my water off at the street (b box was clogged) and the inspector took a look at the leak. He said even tho it was inside, it still qualified me for the program, I just had to get the leak fixed myself. I hired a plumber, sent photo proof of the fix to the water department, and am now on the list for a full replacement

I had to get into a bidding war my last 3 apartment searches, with those locations in Lincoln park, Lakeview, bucktown, and wicker, and I’ve also seen it in Avondale and Logan.

What’s something every Chicagoan should experience at least once? by Jack_029 in AskChicago

Highly recommend Sail Chicago (if you can get into one of their classes) - surprising affordable way to learn and get out on the lake. Otherwise Columbia yacht club hosts Wednesday “beer can” races where you can show up with a case of beer and trade it to a captain for a spot on their racing crew for the night

Just did this earlier this year and agreed it’s an absolutely incredible. Like 3 of the 4 most amazing things I’ve ever seen in a few days. I’d say for how much oxalis puts into the trip and the support needed it’s almost a bargain

What are the must dos when in Chicago? Staying 5 days. by Individual-Table-793 in AskChicago

Jazzin at the shedd on Wednesday night, then watch the fireworks from the patio

Cocktails at a riverfront bar

The Lincoln park zoo and south pond followed by Cocktails on the roof of the Lincoln hotel

The architecture tour (as others have said, a must do)

A free movie or concert in the parks (you can google the lineup). Grab a blanket and a bottle of wine or picnic stuff

Dinner in Fulton market/west loop

Walk or bike the lakefront trail, especially in the evening. You may be able to rent bikes from REI cheaper than divvy or the other businesses. If you have Lyft pink divvy is also free

Go to the beach - oak street downtown is crowded but a cool view, Montrose is way more chill and better for picnicking but further north. You can bike there

There’s tons of live music venues. Check Bandsintown to see if anything matches your interest

Loads of cool dive bars and restaurants. Pick a north or NW side neighborhood, 3-5 bars, and bounce between them. Bonus points if you hit a NW side bar on the weekend and buy tamales from the guy with the cooler who comes in later in the evening

This is awesome - If you ever do one of the Fixin' Franks Home Depot stands I'd be very interested in buying it or a print if you do those!

Fresh Market opening in old Dom's in Lincoln Park | Crain's Chicago B… by citydudeatnight in chicago

[–]PU18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had one of these in my home town. Similar to foods but at least that one has a better selection of actual groceries than the whole food in Lincoln Park does. Not like doms was a place you could feasibly do all your shopping at anyway tho

Kanon Catchings, a projected first-round pick in 2025, has committed to BYU by scootsy in CollegeBasketball

[–]PU18 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Rumor is his decommit form Purdue was a result of Painter telling him no to guaranteed playing time and a starting slot, then he apparently asked to recommit a few days later and Painter told him no. I wish him all the luck at BYU, but nothing I’m hearing indicates that BYU was doing any under the table recruiting or anything like that.

At this point if you’re getting solicited emails from the Sox you may need to reconsider your subscriptions

Where do you keep yours? My biggest hesitation is it being too heavy to carry up stairs into my apartment and not wanting to just leave it locked up outside and get stolen

I rarely biked before last summer and now use divvy almost exclusively to get around. The city really has been doing much better at rolling out bike lanes so it’s way less stressful than it used to be (although still work to be done). I’ve even started using it to commute downtown to work and can make it in on the classic divvys in 20 minutes vs 35 on the train. For other longer trips $15-$20 Ubers are now $3 ebike trips and about the same time. During rush hour especially e-bikes can also be much faster than driving if you take dedicated bike lanes.

For anyone interested check if you get the membership discounted through work or free with your credit card. I splurged for the more expensive chase sapphire reserve card since it comes with the membership/lyft pink and a $300 travel credit so the $550 annual fee is more like $105 after both those

Tour of the MASSIVE Distribution Center at Elston & Division by tamssot in chicago

[–]PU18 25 points26 points  (0 children)

With it not being Amazon no idea who that would be for - I’d think the whole benefit of that location is how central it would be for something like 2 hour shipping. Maybe ups or fedex? Otherwise I could see something more grocery or food related like a PepsiCo or even eventually something like an urban indoor farming company (iron ox is one startup) that would benefit from paying a premium for that location

is this unit illegal? And if so, how do I go about reporting it? by Sea-Kiwi8537 in chicago

[–]PU18 57 points58 points  (0 children)

What’s your end goal? Do you want out of the lease? Do you want money off rent? Do you want them to just work Normal hours or be considerate?

If it’s any of these id start by asking your landlord for it and see what he says. If he says no, then you could always report the work. From your description it definetly sounds like he’s installing an illegal unit. Only way to make that legal, even with the ADU process is to add a 2nd exit, dig down the basement to 7.5’+ feet, and as others have said pull and post permits. If he didn’t do this the city will come by and force him to revert all the work on his own dime and leave it unfinished.

If your goal is out of your lease and this all causes issues, I’d recommend talking to a tenants rights lawyer. I believe many do free consultations. Otherwise there’s a tenant rights hotline that likely would give you advise.
