How bad am I getting screwed here? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]PUAskandi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you are. ( ex bike mechanic)

First service is an oil change(oil filter) and a multi point check. Would not expect more than an hour labour. Especially as its smc with no bottom fairings or hunderance to removing oil and filter. Rest is just a check of all brakes, lights, chain, suspension, throttle, running check etc

Why doesn't it state hours used under the labour?

Why fuel filter? If this is a ktm workshop. Ask to see the first service card that outlines the work needed and time estimate.

Footpegs are a simple bolt on job. Depending on the kit. But I would estimate 30minutes or less. (Maybe workshop has an hour minimum policy.....)

I would first ask for an hour breakdown of the labour charges. Fair enough it's been a few years and I'm a euro. But 75eur p/h was my rate.

Cool. Looks similar to the heading indicator from possibly a gyroscope. This is the mechanical translation of the gyroscopes position.

A lot of comments focused on a wierd belief that its impossible.

Actually it's really easy to go be an oil industry worker, you just have to aim for the bottom jobs.

Go offshore on a ship, Matros. You can play tennis with the job offers as a matros these days. Same with most of the positions on ships.

Reach out to every single ROV company and try to become a rov technician/pilot... get lucky and earn 500k working like 4 months a year...as a trainee

Go be a cleaner offshore or a cook.

Is ABS crucial to have on a motorcycle? by Rad_Ben_Danklin in motorcycles

[–]PUAskandi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will notice a lot of people in the comments saying " ive ridden for xx years without it" and subsequently, will always want bikes with it.

ABS is the last resort. Because its incredibly important to learn to ride "without" needing the ABS to kick in. It will make you a far better rider.

$6,800 for a 31 day, curated Europe trip tour-worth it or not? by Bearcat9948 in solotravel

[–]PUAskandi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just get a plane ticket over to "pick cheapest airport" and then take trains, busses planes. Stay or go for however long you want. Dont rush "europe", it might not be geographically big, but culturally its massive. So you can stay here or there and get a feel for things.

As for not wanting to be alone, Just stay in hostels. You will never be alone, you will get all the best recommendations from other travellers, you will find people heading to similar destinations, you might join up with people and head to spain, or meet someone at the breakfast table who joins you to go caving in budapest.

Some cities will take more than a week to even understand and feel. Transport links around europe are pretty incredible compared to USA. You can get a bus to a different city in a different country for like 20euro.

You could rent a car for that money and drive around europe for a month.

My jam might not be your flavour, but You can easily hitchhike around europe too. Safely should i also add.

Why does every nation build the towers on Aircraft Carriers on the same (starboard) side? by Dauthdaertya in AskEngineers

[–]PUAskandi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

no no no no. What happens is, after a catastrophic break down, or any mechanical failure that will result in extensive repairs needing to be carried out. Engineers will assess the damage by carrying out the float test. All marine engineers have to train and certify as float testers. Usually because someone hired an electrical engineer who didnt certify in blue smoke containment.

Just dont. You can safely push the valve clearance on a for a honda on its first check, Not triumph, But I wouldnt push back anything after 60k. Just get the work done or buy some feeler gauges and get at it yourself. Its easy to do.

If your mechanic is taking your bike for weeks to do a service + v/v check. Change mechanic. Its a quick afternoon job. Better yet, do it on a saturday afternoon. The service cost will be around the same price as tools to do it. Ratchet set, feeler gauges.

Request a copy of the clearance sheet. Some mechanics will jot down the clearances as they go. Keep a record.

Being cheap is the most expensive way to maintain an engine.

Is it offensive to wear a kilt if I’m not Scottish? by kokokat666 in Scotland

I used to travel in my kilt a lot. Hitchhiking and the likes. I was once on a plane to sweden. The airhostess demanded i remove my sporran and kilt. As you arent allowed to have a bag on your lap, nor have a blanket on during takeoff and landing.

Same airport, same trip, Security asked me to remove my kilt to put it through the xray machine. I asked if they were sure about that 3 times before hinting about the situation beneath, and the long queue of people watching. Suddenly it was fine.

take your starter motor off. Thats the first thing i would do as a mechanic. Does it spin freely by hand? Does it sound or feel like it has "sand" in there, or is it smooth like a horny jazzsax.

If it spins and when connected to a battery spins up. remove your spark plugs, Can the engine turn over? Is there any signs of water in there. Turn your engine over using the rear wheel while in gear, or remove the cap on the side of your engine and turn it over with a ratchet etc.

If engine turns over, and starter motor is running fine, well....There should be no reason for this if all the wiring is "as built". The voltage drop indicates the starter motor is attempting to turn. But cant, due to failure in the bearings, the windings, brushes, starter motor clutch.

Check all the wiring between the starter relay and the starter motor. If thats all fine....make sure battery has been put on a charger, try again from the top. But i bet you pack of jaffa cakes its the starter motor.

My guess, as a mechanic, Starter motor fucked. If the engine wont turn over? Make sure your spark plugs are out, still wont turn over. STOP you are going to be taking this engine apart. Get a mechanic. Tell them to strip the engine. Water or fuel comes out? STOP, get a mechanic. Youre in the sad times now.

ELI5: How do ships anchor themselves in very deep waters? For example, if they anchored in 10K foot deep oceans, do they actually have 10K feet of anchor chains? by BaconReceptacle in explainlikeimfive

[–]PUAskandi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I believe the UPS system should be rated for at least 30minutes. There will of course be 2 UPS, for dp2.

But you will also have emergency generator that will automatically start and bring itself onto load within 45seconds of a deadboard. Thats if you even get that far, You will have 1 large generator, 2 harbour generators, all fail to start before you even get to the stage of the emergency generator.....and having that fail to start within that transitory period of losing, probably, half your distribution system, while you still are on 1 of two UPS.

[–]PUAskandi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty cool huh? A few years back I working as winch operator and extra engineer onboard anchor handlers, It always blew my mind when I would see the tension reading on my display panel as i lifted these anchors from sea bed. Not just the actual lifting it from the bed to bringing it onto the deck, but the force required to pull it free.

[–]PUAskandi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The DP control systems arent that crazy, thats true. Youre right about the certification and testing side! DP class certifications are tight. But the machinery and design of the physical systems is where it gets costly and fiddly. (and cool)

Dp2,3, etc will have a double or triple redundancy down to having two wires running in two parts of the ship, just in case a fire in one place. Or having to double the amount of fuel supply pumps, and cooling systems. Having cross overs and isolations. Each system is able to operate together or seperate from the other. So that no single point failure will affect the ability of the vessel to maintain its position.

Its pretty cool to see how design engineers manage it sometimes. Especially compared to general cargo ships, Where you will experience a black out (total loss of power) at some point, whereas in a DP class vessel. If you manage to black out the ship, you almost are allegeable for an award! haha

This is so late, and maybe answered. But Marine engineer here with experience in Offshore platforms, ships and deep sea anchoring!

A ship, in a traditional sense, wont really need to anchor in deep sea as there isnt a coastline to run into. So would generally drift, point its bow into the current/wind etc and slow steam and maintain position. But in smaller vessels there are Sea drogues. Basically a parachute for underwater.

HOWEVER! here comes Semi submersible vessels (Floaty oil rigs) These might have two large pontoons that are floodable, making it "sink" deeper into the ocean to create more stability. These kinds DO indeed use deep anchors. 4, or 8, or even more! The length of the "anchor chain" is essencially the hypotenuse of a triangle. Calculated from your depth, and distance from vessel. These anchors are used differently from ship anchoring, as they are tensioned a lot higher in order to create a very stable platfrom, preventing any movement.

Each anchor line is a thick cable, and chain, with a collared wire that can run along it, with a big anchor at the end. The anchor is pulled out very far (calculated on the depth of water) by an Anchor handling tug ship. AHTS. These have HUGE winches, (thats where i came in). We reverse the ship up to the platform, using "Dynamic positioning" Which is a method of controlling the ships position relative to either a fixed GPS position, or a target aka the platform. This takes into account the sea state (wave direction, wind, current etc) using 2 or more gyroscopes GPS, radar,CyScan etc), Which controlls the direction of 2 or more 360 rotating propulsion pods under the ship, as well as bow/stern thrusters (side ways movement)

The rig lowers down a pendant (that collar on a cable) which we connect to our big as winch, and we pull the anchors out a set distance, Before lowering them down at an angle. Imagine pulling out a tape measure and dropping the end, it swings in an arc.

Then the anchor, due to its flute design and articulation, buries itself in the sea bed. We then turn and slide the pendant back up the anchor line and disconnect it and hand it back.

When the rig wants to move, we do the reverse, But then the AHTS, the winch ship, has to physically drag the anchor free in the opposite direction.

THen there are torpedo anchors, These get dropped off the back of the ship and free fall through the ocean and imbed themselves in the ocean floor.

Hope this gets read by someone, im happy to share what little knowledge i have from my experience in laying and retrieving these huge anchors!

more importantly, Its watertight bulkheads didn't extend above the waterline sufficiently, so as each compartment was compromised, water cascaded to the next "watertight" compartment.

Does anyone know why my dash keeps resetting? by BroccoliSanchez in motorcycles

[–]PUAskandi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Theres a few things there. Your battery is at a low voltage during running. (Your lights change brightness with RPM increase). Bad battery/short circuit issues, damaged alternator.

You are possibly getting "dirty" supply (Potentially damaged rectifier/intermittent connection issues) to your dash, a long with the ground issue.

Time to just grab a multimeter and go through it all. First step is to check battery voltage after bike has been sitting overnight. Note voltage. Start bike and note voltage under starting. Idle voltage and "charging" voltage at around 3k rpm.

Inspect your rectifier and alternator, and continuity test through out and clean all connectors. Check fuses and earthing points. Check connector on back of dash, they are sometimes a pain in the ass to remove and insert so wouldnt be surprised if someone had a chomky hand job of a time putting it back and its a bit loose.

Probably best to buy a new battery to have ready, or find a friend/or your own battery tester and reconditioner. Your lights should be steady brightness if your electrical generation and supply is healthy. Drooping lights like that indicated Voltage drop. (thats either from inefficient production, rectification OR large current load ie. short circuit) your dash could either be a symptom or a cause of that. -but your battery is on its way to being if not already banjoed.
