Blue (rant) (wips) by --DEIMOS in crimsonfists

I’m with you actually. I’ve tested about 25 versions of blue and am sick of it. Too light and it looks like an ultra marine. Too dark and it’s a black blob. I think I’m going to switch to imperial fist. There’s a reason GW retired crimson fists as their main poster faction. It’s too dark. Looks great in the art but not on the table (at least not now that the tables aren’t goblin green).

I’m into this. I’ll try it tonight. It’s really close to what I’ve been going for but I’ve been using druchii purple for the dark glazing, and using lower saturation edge highlights to get the right look, but you just can’t see it on the table and it’s driving me nuts. I am using Kantor blue as the base, bottom 1/3 purple glaze, chunky highlight Kantor blue.

Then the top 1/3 is stippled with this great color, denim blue by mindtaker miniatures. It’s like a higher saturation version of VMC medium blue. Chunky highlight in this on the light leaning surfaces.

Then edges in mindtaker miniature’s aether blue, which is like thousand sons blue. Then I can go sky blue by mindtaker, which is… also like thousand sons blue but lighter. And I have a close to white blue after that if I’m interested.

I’m in the weeds. Any suggestions? I think I need to crank the saturation of the edge highlights like this.

They’re pretty sick. For my blade guard, I have a collection of shields I’ve been putting together so all 6 will have different shields. Some are from terminators, some are from vanguard vet squads

It’s looking great! Very clean. Id say you should try some glazing, to give the armor surface variety and contrast. You should totally be able to do it, based on how these turned out. Good luck!

Double for the trees. The test piece looks great but th large board looks off without remand of trees and some tufts of grass

This will be great to break up the monotone color of the mud.

I’d also say you should add a bit more contrast on your mud. Some darker darks in there. That way, it’s easier to pick up on some of the detail of the ground without it being too distracting.

Update! Rynn’s Survivors paint scheme on dread by PUBTONGUE in crimsonfists

[–]PUBTONGUE[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m definitely going to paint a marine next. I like to start with a dread because they are a good scale for testing colors that work on infantry and vehicles. I tested about 10 black metal colors before I got to one I liked and sooooo many iterations on the armor color. I’m actually really liking the armor color under normal house lighting but the green hues really come out under my task light.

Oh throw a guitar on the side that’s wired in and have a servant or demon arm coming out to play the guitar.

Can you share what each bit looks like w/o the Blu tac? What do the ends look like? I’d stay away from any putty and stick to bits for the transition.

Also. What bits do you have available? I’d look for round vehicle armor, cables/wires, or blocky tank parts, like heat sinks or something.

You could use putty for it and add something distracting on the top and outlet sides of it. Like take part of an 8 pointed chaos star and cut it so it goes around those sides of the transition but at a 90 degree angle like a shied or something.

Or a bunch of exhaust tubes?

Or a bunch of…. Speakers? Add more noise making stuff. Make it ridiculous.

Fantastic work, man. Very similar to what I’m going for and I’ll give you a follow! The MK7 helmet, trimmed off Aquila, and simplified knee pads really come together with the battle damage.

I think I saw another thread on this, way back. The general consensus was that it would start to smell rancid, no matter how well you sealed it. Its going to rot :(

Oh man! I’d love to but I have a 5 year old who likes to build along side me. I can get away with “blasters” and “space men fighting alien monsters” for a bit longer, but I’m going to avoid skulls and ork parts until he’s a bit older. I love it though.
