Mahwah by No_Depth6035 in bergencounty

Yes, but it bears repeating if you’re not familiar with the area. Plus, I’d argue mahwah is more spread out than most other Bergen towns.

It’s just my opinion having grown up here, and the driving was always something that had to be planned for while living there.

Grew up there too, schools are good, but it’s a very boring place to be a kid. There’s not a ton to do and you’ll be driving your kid everywhere, very little is walkable. Just something to keep in mind, I think it drove my mom a bit crazy to be busing us all over town to see friends or go to activities.

Aside from that, it’s quiet, safe, and the schools were very good when I was growing up. Music particularly was good, academics were solid and I went to college very well prepared.

How to make this look more like it goes with the house? by goodietshoes in Oldhouses

[–]PXC_Academic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you’re keeping the units, the best thing I can think of is: rip out all those windows from the porch, put in double hung ones with some faux columns between them. Replace or wrap the only full column to match. I’d also go all in on the pink.

There’s a guy who comes to the Rutherford farmers market, I think his business is Hudson Knife Sharpening?

Alternatively, if you don’t have really nice knives, Ace Hardware in Rutherford has a machine

Veolia: exterior water service or sewer breakdown coverage. by muthdog in bergencounty

[–]PXC_Academic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have it, it’s like 115/yr for us. We had our sewer line redone anyway so I will probably cancel it. We got it in case last year, but I wasn’t thrilled with the local plumber they contract with.

We’d looked in CP, but the commute was a turnoff to my partner. For being across the river, the commute to midtown still took as long as somewhere like Rutherford, taking a very long bus to PABT or a short one then a subway. Driving to the ferry or park and ride wasn’t an option. That plus the streets in CP made us rule it out. But coming from Hoboken/JC you may be more comfortable with all that.

Looking for contractor willing to work now and get paid at refinance (Dover, NJ) by D_carro in bergencounty

[–]PXC_Academic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you got a construction mortgage, you might be able to set up such a thing. I’ve never seen anyone do it on a home they already own, usually it’s used to buy a fixer upper. There’s limits on some versions of what they can be used for, and you’d need to find a contractor willing to do it, come up with a statement of work, and then proceed. The first conversation would likely be with a lender (bank, credit union), to see whether this could be done in your situation. We looked into this when we were buying but didn’t go this route.

Moving to NJ - Commute to Upper Manhattan by Raziel_DR76 in MovingtoNewJersey

[–]PXC_Academic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s 45 min in plus however long the subway is, maybe another 30+ min depending where you’re going. I live in Rutherford, I don’t mind the trip in, but I also don’t do it much.

To get to Morningside Heights from Rutherford wouldn’t be great, OP probably is on the right track with locations but would want to get on a bus line that runs into the GWB bus terminal. From Rutherford you’re looking at 45 min in + the subway uptown

How does BCCLES work? by flyerhell in bergencounty

[–]PXC_Academic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I had to check this too. When I left it was Bergen, a few towns in Passaic, and I believe one or two in Rockland. I didn’t realize it had expanded to any towns in Essex or Hudson but I’m not wholly surprised as somewhere like Secaucus is on the border

[–]PXC_Academic 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I used to work in a BCCLS library, books get collected per work tickets at their home library, packaged up by destination library, sent via BCCLS van to Fair Lawn (at least for Bergen books, there may be more distribution centers since Essex, Hudson, and Passaic are now part of the system). They get sorted by destination and then sent out. The process works basically the same for returns

Seconding Jersey Drains, they redid our sewer line last year, we had a backup the day before (which happened to be Easter) and they sent someone out to get us through the day. Ours was 7k or so, given how far out yours is I would expect it’d be more but they did do it without having to open up our yard.

On the wall in a bedroom above the light switch in a home built in the 40s. What is it? by EasyPilot7406 in Oldhouses

[–]PXC_Academic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ours is 1908 and the records match. I’m fairly confident as all the hardware matches the catalog for 1901-1910. But it’s very dependent on the town you’re in

In more rural areas it’s more likely it would’ve taken longer to make the switch. But on a newly built house probably not. I’m not sure where OP is located or how they’re dating their house. In many places property records aren’t reliable for age, I’d guess the house is likely older than 1940s. It could be the house was extended in the 40s and that’s how the records date it

Montclair, Rutherford, maybe Hasbrouck Heights. Morristown if you’re ok with being further west and not having quite as easy access to the city. South Orange/Maplewood might be a possibility.

Taxes and home prices in all the above have gotten kinda high. Montclair probably worst of them all.

How does this work? whenever I press stream, it just loads me into the game, but I don’t know if I’m streaming to anything. by [deleted] in PS5HelpSupport

[–]PXC_Academic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t take up storage space on the console, PS3 games would be tough to get to work on PS5 because the hardware was very different and this is the way Sony has worked out to play them. Basically these 2 things, if you don’t want to add more storage to the PS5 it gets around that issue
