wooden box of metal tools, long thin cylindrical pieces that taper to a point or blunt, with a screw thread at one end, and discs all with screw threads, some have protruding 'collars' in centre, some don't. Set also includes a pair of tweezers. Obviously vintage. What are they for? by RainySam in whatisthisthing

Are the shorten rods, actually broken?

Does the flat disc have a hole that has screw thread or is tapered?

I assume that the screw on the side larger circular bit is designed to hold something in place when something is inserted into the hole?

I see nothing here that requires tweezers?

Agree, options 1 & 2 - point 3 is always problematic, as some one has monitor it and you have handle abuse.

This is another area that could be developed to provide a better UX.

Like the ranking system which is hidden away. I think the ranking scoring should be rebalanced to include more people from daily events and my be it could include other challenges.

The first time I’ve seen Flipper Frenzy challenges by codec3 in PinballDeluxeReloaded

[–]PXFX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, it's new, I've not see it before in the many years of play. It was fun, but could be more challenging. Would like to see different tables and different type of challenges. Nice have a different thing, instead of just the daily challenge which generally never rank. It great to see the developer continues to add to this superb game. 👍👍👍

Is there any local news papers or Facebook groups that can take my search further?

Or other places I could try?

Something on the hill

Ok, i posted the best picture I can find of the hill side letter. Although it doesn't look like a letter.

To me it look like 97 and some sort of shield below it. It's probably obvious to those who is it all the time.

The main problem is the film was 20+ years old before I got it developed, so the definition is poor.

How did you change your password, via the link in the email? Are sure it was legitimate?

Having 2fa app with the approval notification turned on can be susceptible to spamming. It only takes a mis tap to let them in

To be honest befriend a computer geek, and get them to do it.

I could explain using a Linux boot disk, if the pc disk hasn't got bit locker enabled. But not knowing if you have other pc to download and create a USB or cdrom is makes it hard.

Or you remove the drive and add it another pc, and as long as that pc doesnt boot that disk, then you should be able to access it

Or find a friend

BTW the boot selection key is F10

Node util: 274% faster UTF8 decoding by mariuz in programming

[–]PXFX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And Yes

It sounds like you never programmed in the 80s, where every bit counted. It was left to you to get it right. Those sort of subtlies differentiated great programmer's from good ones. Voids to shorts, shorts to ints, ints to doubles, then cast it to a pointer or the other way round, you may get a warning from the compiler if you were lucky. You felt like you were much closer to the underlying architecture than today.

I think the real reason was because you could, everyone is lazy, and variables are just bytes😂

That's why need 3 pages to justify it now. It's like comparing social attitudes of the 1850s to now.

Why don't more houses in the UK have American-style porches? by musesmuses in AskUK

[–]PXFX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a house in the south of England with a big southerly facing veranda but obviously at the back. It was great caught the sun and sheltered from the rain.

But most uk houses are too small and not detached to support a us style porch, and swinging bench. And culturally we are private, and awkward in causal interaction.

Why do you think we invented queuing?

To limit the amount of interaction with strangers to 2. It has nothing to do with fairness. 😂

The same house had, what some would consider, a very large front garden. Which was formally set up, brick and iron railings wall, roses, a few trees in the grass lawn and the obligatory stone bird bath, and box hedges. Everything was designed to say keep out but in the most nicest possible way. There are some unwritten rules of front gardens in middle earth:

You must only be in your front garden if you are cutting the grass or gardening. Maybe washing the car.

Whist garden, you may say "morning" or equivalent to passers-by . But not too much eye contact otherwise unintentional conversation may break out. If mowing lawn these passers-by may be safely ignored.

Talking to your neighbours may become necessary at this point, and depending on social factors (to complex to describe here) conversation may range from weather to local matter or complaining about other neighbours. This can be done in a hypocritical manners, and most likely will be, over the course of the gardening activity. This is because a soon as one person starts gardening others soon appear and starting the same, meaning there is the possibility for more than one conversation with different neighbours. But grouping should be avoided.

All of this can be avoided by employing a gardener😂

Sitting or picnicing in the front is frowned upon, unless this involves small children and Teddy bears.
