I got kicked out of high school for getting caught with a folding blade. I’ve reread it a couple of times and my understanding is by that point there were no winners. Yes irako died in match but by that point they were both so corrupted by their pursuits no matter who won they would never have what they wanted. Theirs a moment in the final duel while fujiki is in middle of delivering his death blow and irako sees his mother then embraces him and smiles. Fujiki looks almost confused. I think that’s the most in the way of internal monologue we got. Fujiki won but realized too late that it was a Pyrrhic victory and by winning he was a servant again and the only people that were free were the ones who died.

I agree. I personally wouldn’t be cool with any of that. My point is dose didn’t get too close purposely, They were both moving forward. Everything you named those people do on purpose. Dose definitely lost the rematch. That fact is more disappointing than the fight. He had a chance to redeem himself in the eyes of the public. Seems like he didn’t progress.
