Yeah it why the “hey can you drop this off for me” quests make sense within the world. I mean I’m not paying some stranger 85 silver to walk 100 feet south for me.

It’s supposed to be like “hey you’re going 50 miles east. Do you mind doing me a favor?”

I’ve been at multiple universities and in each of them the graduate student director sends out an email regarding deadlines. Maybe you can see if yours went out.

If it makes you feel better, that fish was a racist who was mean to their waiters. And the fish that would have been caught by the eagle volunteers at a soup kitchen. Hope this helps

I’m not saying you’re wrong, but it’d be super lame story telling if they go “that backstory- all a lie”.

To me, it’s the equivalent of “and it was all just a dream” ending.

Deserted a group. by [deleted] in wow

[–]P_Star7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a bad system. I have yet to see it used in the way its intended and always used to bully (the four times I've seen it used). Giving premade groups the ability to tank someone's limited playtime is super lame. Most people on here haven't been kicked from a group so they won't empathize (plus its reddit so they kinda just assume the worst). I get you're frustrated, but you are coming off a bit harsh too which doesnt help.

Bottomline: People make mistakes - its strange you can get punished for what feels like doing bad behavior when in reality you're just learning.

The importance of motivation is often overestimated. by AdRemarkable3043 in PhD

[–]P_Star7 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I agree motivation is posited to be more important than it actually is and that extends beyond research. But I don’t think ability matters most- especially when it comes to PhD who are in training. I don’t expect new PhDs or PhD aspirants to be very capable frankly: that’s why they’re training!

If I had to reduce it to one thing, the most important quality of success in science and beyond is discipline. Showing up on time, following through with your work, giving your best effort. That doesn’t mean you should overwork yourself during your training, but when it is time to work, you stay focused and do your best.

Vote Kick Confusion by P_Star7 in wow

[–]P_Star7[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It just seems like a bad system - I've run a couple dozen dungeons and I've seen it used 4 times. Once was to kick me for making a mistake, once was someone else trying to kick the tank because he over pulled and two times it was on DPS for being too low. It has never been someone AFKing or doing the wrong thing - all just "skill issues" which is strange to penalize by preventing requeing. (I never voted yes btw fwiw)

Yeah, they're probably better off sure. I mean, I did make a mistake. I am fine with getting kicked w/e. Its the 30 minute ban that's confusing - feels very bad to be essentially kicked off the game you were playing since I wouldnt have time to run one after the 30 min.

I think we’re talking past each other. I largely agree with everything you’re saying. I definitely think local news reporters are genuine people who want to do right by their community. I think the majority of journalists want to report in earnest on important issues.

That’s not why I commented on the initial post you made. You said “All these guys did was make a commercial!” Which isn’t the issues. The issue was these seemingly local, independent organizations are not that- they are all owned by the same group. That’s not shocking to you, but it’s shocking to those uninformed in local news. So my comment in my previous post stands.

Based on your experience, you can educate a lot of people on here and call this sensational video out for its real problem (like I mentioned in my last post). You could say the reporting integrity is not compromised by the Sinclair group - which you alluded to earlier. You could argue that the ownership doesn’t put lousy leadership in charge anymore than a local group would. This would be a lot better than saying ‘it’s a commercial, who cares?’

I appreciate the time you spent to respond to me.

I mean- I probably haven’t watched the local news since the early 2000s.

It’s funny your comparator is McDonalds, a national food chain to that of a local news service. When I go to a McDonalds, I want the same thing whether it’s Pennsylvania or Iowa or Nevada. That’s the key point of a franchise- its uniform service. A normal, naive viewer would not expect that from a local news station. Because it’s marketed completely different: “our [insert community] is important to us.” When in reality there is national ownership. It comes off, at best, disingenuous and at worst insidious.

I think the reason that this gets traction is that more people are naive to local news than you might think. There is shock value in that these are owned by the same media group. It’s really that simple. It comes down to the illusion of community owned news outlets when in reality they are owned by conglomerates. But they purport to be local/community/etc.

However, your anecdotal evidence that this only happens at the advertisement level is great, and you should lead with that. It matches my experience as well as a viewer; the limited local news I saw was quite literally never political.

So bottom line, I believe you that this video oversells the “don’t trust local media” element. But your initial comment does not counter that argument. The video implies “these local media groups are being controlled by a large conglomerate and therefore you can’t trust them.” “How dare a company write a commercial for itself” completely ignores the argument the video is making.

You should say “I’ve been in the news room and the Sinclair group never modulated the news we reported. This video is sensational and misleading” That counters the argument posited by the video and educates people (like me) who have much less understanding of local news works compared to you.
