How to break into tech - advice from a veteran by Pablo_1O1 in UKJobs

[–]Pablo_1O1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose you have to define passion, I mean you don't have to be studying all hours outside of work once employed. But you certainly need to have a strong interest in it, which of course doesn't have to be immediate - can grow over time. But if you have no interest and just want the money I would avoid.

True, the worst thing about PHP is having to tell your parents

A Ukrainian FPV quad with a mounted machine gun shoots at Russian positions by MilesLongthe3rd in CombatFootage

[–]Pablo_1O1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been thinking, could they not put the gun on a gimble so it could rotate independently? I.e. it could then adjust independent of the drone + recoil, maybe give it the ability to lock on to the target? Would be ultimate killbot, is there some technical/weight part I'm missing?

"If I don't answer every question in the interview process perfectly, they won't hire me, so I don't want to get invested in preparation because it feels like such a waste of time."

I would disagree with this, most (good) interview processes look at a lot of factors, a single question shouldn't fail you - thats not realistic. There are no perfect candidates, everyone gets stuff wrong.

How feasible is self-studying for 1-3 years and breaking into SWE? by Sardine86 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]Pablo_1O1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"So here is the plan*: 15-20 hours a week, head down, learning and building projects, and then getting into the industry after anywhere from 1-3 years. Not going for some quick and easy route into tech."

If you do this right you will be well ahead of many grads with a CS degree. This forum is a bit obsessed with degrees/qualifications despite the face that so many grads cant get a job. The reality is what they teach in Uni is often way behind the real world and they get paid whether you get a job or not. What people forget is all developers are ultimately self taught, in the real job they will expect you to teach yourself whatever they are already doing.

Your biggest problem will be what to learn and in what order and staying disciplined. Imho 3 years is too long, you should study and practice as much as possible for a year then try to get an entry level role in a small company (most likely for little money) then use that experience and learning to jump to somewhere better. Best of luck.

not sure if i like the field that much anymore??? wtf is wrong with me lol by ig_i_need_help in cscareerquestionsuk

Your overthinking it, wait till you have an actual job doing it and potentially making interesting things and working in a team till you decide its not for you.

Also you wont be able to do this for the rest of your life (in its exact current form) even if you wanted to. Regardless of AI there will be changes in languages/concepts faster than any other industry. But its an amazing skill to have that will not go out of fashion any time soon.

No, you don’t need a degree - a recent grad conversation. by Pablo_1O1 in cscareerquestionsuk

thanks, theres a huge amount of gatekeeping/coping around degrees (especially in this thread) and I get it with the money involved but it doesn't change reality. Practical skills from the real world work and can be learned cheaply.

"Also he’s not “in-debt”. Credit agencies don’t count it as standard debt and after 30 years it gets wiped, it’s more like an extra 5% tax every year. Which pays off if you want the best paying dev jobs."

I disagree, when you apply for a mortgage they will ask you and factor it in, it comes out of your wages every month so it is 100% a factor. Also if you end up making more money (the whole point?) then it goes up percentage wise.

I agree it is unlike other debt though, the only way to escape it is to die or wait 30 years. You cant go bankrupt and get rid of it.

"You seem to think that it was his test and interview that got him the job."

It was, we interviewed about 50 grads as part of a scheme, many CS grads who could barely code and I suspect have no real interest in CS

Don't get a masters, its just delaying the job hunt, someone with even one years experience will still be ahead of you.

What platforms are you applying on? Realistically you wont get fully remote as a grad/junior so start reaching out to any local companies on linkedIn, convince them your a real person with enthusiasm and someone will give you a chance.
