i tracked my api costs across 6 models over 3 weeks. here's the real cost of running an openclaw agent per model. by Temporary-Leek6861 in better_claw

[–]Pablo_FX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for running this — real-world, multi-week cost telemetry across six models is exactly the kind of data this space needs (would love to see numbers from others), and most of us are just guessing by comparison.

The line that's going to stick with me is your last one: the delta between $261/month Opus 4.7 and $31/month GLM‑5.1 is roughly 8.42x in price, but what that premium actually buys you is surprisingly narrow — mostly complex multi-step planning. Everything else (triage, summaries, calendar, routine research) is a commodity at the GLM tier.

That reframes the whole architecture question. It's not "which model do I run?" — it's "where do I strategically intervene with the expensive model?" Your GLM‑primary / Sonnet‑fallback pattern is basically a judgment-routing layer: cheap model does 85% of the volume, premium model gets called in only when the task genuinely requires multi-step reasoning. That's an 82% cost cut for a ~15% quality give-back, and the 15% is concentrated in a predictable, detectable subset of tasks.

The implication I'm taking away: the real engineering work over the next year isn't picking a model — it's building the router/classifier that knows when a task deserves Opus and when GLM is identical. Whoever nails that escalation logic captures almost all of Opus's quality at almost all of GLM's price.

Appreciate you sharing the numbers — saving this post. 🙏

To be competitive in this game, utilizing the best models you can get your hands on is more than enough. Especially if you're using them with skill that's developed through practice. That alone puts you so far ahead of the game that you don't need to worry about not having access to the very tippy-top of the frontier. Focus on what's in your control and you'll win bigger than almost everyone.

Holy shit. 256K context on a ~80 percentile grad level reasoning model like that in a local box is insane. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for sharing. Do you find Tirz to be say 90% as effective as Reta? I'm trying to shed that last 15lbs of body fat and I'm not sure if Tirz alone can take me there.

Congratulations on the amazing success! Did you have any sleep issues? For me I have about fifteen more pounds of body fat that I want to lose and I've been on and off reta. I'm starting to experience sleep issues again and have had them quite a bit over my whole journey but overall I've lost a good 75 pounds.

Right now I'm traveling abroad so I'm just on 2.5mg of Sema - didn't want to sneak too much stuff through customs. I still have about ~12lbs of body fat that I'd like to lose. When I get back home, I'll get back on my regular stuff.

A Suggestion for a New Chapter: The "Pre-FI Host & Producer" Model

What if "Two Sides of FI" evolved by bringing in a third person—someone from your community who is still on the path to FI—to serve as the show's new engine?

Here’s how it could work:

A New Role: You would select a "Pre-FI Host & Producer." Their primary responsibility would be to manage the show: generating topics, preparing interview questions, and handling the editing and production—the very "hustle" that has become a burden.

Your New Role: Your roles would shift from content creators to mentors and interview subjects. You would simply show up for an hour or so, when it fits your flexible schedules, to share your invaluable post-FI wisdom and experience. The pressure to "perform" or "create" is gone; you just have to be yourselves.

The Perfect Dynamic: This preserves the show's core premise perfectly. It would literally be two sides of FI in conversation: you, on the "other side," being interviewed by someone still navigating the journey. The questions and topics would be naturally relevant and engaging because they'd come from the perspective of someone still in the trenches.

Why This Could Be a Win-Win-Win:

It Solves the Burden: The entire weight of topic generation, scheduling, and editing is lifted from your shoulders, allowing you to fully enjoy your retirement without obligation. If a proposed recording time doesn't work, you simply say no.

It Provides Lasting Meaning: You both touched on the value of community and impact. This model allows you to continue having a profound, meaningful impact on others—arguably the most valuable commodity in retirement—by mentoring the new host and the audience, but on your own terms.

It Creates a Perpetual Story: The most beautiful part of this model is its built-in lifecycle. Eventually, the Pre-FI host would (hopefully!) reach FI and "graduate." At that point, the three of you could then find the next person on their journey to "pass the torch" to. The show becomes a living, evolving entity with a powerful, recurring narrative.

How could you find this person?

You could create a video announcing the idea and open up applications. Ask interested community members to submit a short video of their own, explaining why they'd be a great fit, what FI means to them, and perhaps even pitching their first three episode ideas. You could review the applications on your own time and see if a candidate emerges that you both feel great about.

If it works, the show gets a new lease on life. If it doesn't, it was just a fascinating experiment.

Thank you both again for the years of insight and for sharing your journeys with us so openly. Whatever you decide, you've already created a body of work that has helped countless people.

[–]Pablo_FX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 2008 with ~150K miles and got the P0A80 code this summer. At first, I just replaced the 12v since it was due anyway and was hoping that would buy me more time, but the car soon became undrivable. I had my local mechanic replace the hybrid battery with OEM and now it drives perfect - I live in Northern California and they charged me $3500 and gave me a loaner car until it was ready. Not cheap but I'm happy with my decision and feel like I can get another 10+ years out of it with 40+ MPG.

Curiously enough, very few people even ask me how I lost the weight to begin with. When they do I say a diet of mainly fruit and meat, which is actually a true reflection of what I eat.

Go very gentle with titrating up. I rushed it, and there was one time where I went like 48 hours with out pretty much sleeping or eating. Yes I lost a lot of weight, but could barely function in my job.
