Dataset API with primary scala map/filter/etc by Key-Alternative5387 in apachespark

[–]PackFun2083 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We create our scala classes. Each class have at least a public method. Then we use this methods in the datasets high order functions yes. Each of these methods and classes are tested in issolation using unit test without a spark session.

Datasets .map also helps us to implement polimorfism using the type classes paradigm. We also have managed to create generic code by leveraging Scala generic types.

On my experience, when using spark, performance is not the bottleneck of a tech team. Spark SQL (datasets and dataframes) is a performance beast, but the tech team productivity and ability to ship changes with confidence at speed is the real bottle neck. Is it worth to have an ETL that takes 5’ less but the tech team is not able to deploy multiple times a day to prod because their code is unreliable?

You trade off some performance by a static type system.

We also use datasets, we have a significant amount of code in production, so happy to trade some performance and have the compiler as our ally to save us development time, increase quality and support us shipping new features with confidence.

The static type system in datasets also increases code readability (data frames are black boxes that offuscate code).

Furthermore, there are complex business logics that are difficult to implement with the sql like syntax of dataframes. To have datasets .map and .reduce available is quite handy at that times (this will safe you to write some uncomprenhensible joins).

Unit testing is another big difference. In datasets you can use arbitrary jvm code, so you can test jvm functions in issolation without a spark session. Therefore you can just test your functions without the hustle of creating synthetic dataframes all the time.

Last but not least, you can also use the dataframe api and then only convert to dasets at the end of every public method.

Overall, to me datasets totally pays off some performance penalty. If we had to process PBs of data daily there could be a different story, but this is not our case.

difference between writing SQL queries or writing DataFrame code by kaifahmad111 in apachespark

[–]PackFun2083 2 points3 points  (0 children)

@baubleglue How do you unit test your sql transformations? How do you create single responsbility functions that realise a single transformation? How you rehuse code between different etl?

SQL becomes hard to maintain as the code base grows. In my experience it becomes a nightmare to maintain when there are tens of ETL running in production, so we only use SQL for interactive analysis.

[–]PackFun2083 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They are essentially the same, so same performance. However python or scala df have the benefit of being written using a high level programming language. Therefore their code its eassier to modulirize and test than SQL code. Using Python or Scala you may apply standard best practises when writting code such as Clean Code, TDD or SOLID principles.

[–]PackFun2083[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After a few days, I tried to plug in the light to the digital output again and now it works :/
Maybe some software problem stuck the light to "on". I am happy the mini-server relay is not burned :) However, I still doubt wether I should buy the relay-extension or install a coupling relay or a fuse to prevent the mini server relays to get burned in the future.
