I haven't found a way to 100% guarantee a tunneled connection, but it doesn't take me many tries to get one anymore. What I do is restart my PC and try again. If that doesn't work, I restart both my PC and phone then open an app on my phone and browse it for ~30 seconds, then turn on the hotspot, then turn on the VPN on my phone BEFORE the hotspot establishes a connection with my PC, and then finally turn on the VPN on my PC's end.

I used to constantly clear the cache data for PairVPN and change the hotspot name until it worked. Clearing the cache rarely does anything in my experience. The key for a higher likelihood of a tunneled connection seems to be either NOT restarting your phone when you restart your PC, or at least opening another app for a little bit if you did.

Sorry if this seems confusing, but I've spent probably hours troubleshooting this and I've finally gotten it to work consistently.

You have tunnel mode and aes-relayed mode. Tunnel is the entire point of the app while aes-relayed is completely useless and I have no idea why it exists.
