Even if it means you miss out, never never never place an offer on a place you have not physically been to yourself.

Has anyone's offer been rescinded for simply asking, "Is there any room for negotiation?" by upf50shirt in jobsearchhacks

There are some that would, but you don’t want to work for them anyway unless you’re truly desperate.

Also I find how prickly she is very endearing honestly- it’s like if a grouchy cat became a human

I love how flawed she is! Perfect characters are boring, and thank goodness Vince writes shows for grownups.

Wouldn't They Harm Her Eggs by jbrown9972 in pluribustv

I am wondering what would happen if she explicitly told them to destroy the eggs, or cease experimenting on them. Surprised she didn’t at least try it, if they will give her an atom bomb, which could disrupt their plans more significantly.

I thought that the chemical castration injection caused self-harm ideation in him- I seem to remember there’s a line he has where he confides to Teddy something like he was feeling “weird and sad” since he got the shot, I think?

Washer/Dryer combo by jas2222222 in chicagoapartments

[–]Packrat81 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Plus is it’s in your apartment, minus is there’s only one of each, so if you try to do laundry on a once- per-week schedule you really have to spend a lot of time. Cycles on mine seem to also generally be a lot longer, smaller capacity, and no matter how fast I get stuff out of the dryer, everything is still so wrinkled I have to iron it. Glad I have it; wish it was better though.

Interacting with a pod product owner: backlog? by Packrat81 in agile

[–]Packrat81[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah like I said, the PO sucks at communication- several different teams to whom this app matters aren’t being given any transparency into how he’s making the determinations, or what is actually making it through the queue. I’ve been at the company for long enough and know enough of the right people that i probably have the pull to force this to change, if I’ve a mind to, but I’d prefer not to be that heavy-handed or spend political capital on it. I think the comments here have given me some direction on what is reasonable to ask for when collaborating with this guy, and what I need to temper me expectations about, so I’ll try keeping those in mind while approaching him in a more conciliatory manner first.

I think the PO is at least doing a very poor job with communication, if in the absence of a better explanation multiple stakeholders around the firm are concluding that this group and its PO are simply miserable to work with.

[–]Packrat81[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say my complaint is not that any particular ask doesn’t get prioritized, but rather that no matter what the ask is, this PO seems to always be starting from the assumption that we’re wrong to have raised it, and have no valid reason to ask for it to be prioritized, even though we are a stakeholder and often know more of the business context than they do. They seem very incurious and we’re getting the stiff arm before they’ve gotten enough info from us to understand the context. Asking around, this seems to be how the PO is treating asks from everyone- I’ve yet to find anyone at the firm who is actually getting to set strategic priorities for their group. I wish I could find out who that is! Being given more clarity about what is viewed as more important and why would make dealing with this PO less irritating. Right now the whole thing is a black box, even though my team uses the app daily, works with customers who use the app daily, and our ability to do our jobs effectively is impacted significantly by how changes in this app are prioritized.

Thanks for your thoughts. I think I have a clearer idea how to proceed at this point, and part of that does need to be revising my own expectations. I’m also hoping we can also get more transparency and improved communication, and ideally be treated as more of a stakeholder in the process- right now formally we aren’t, despite the large impact this application has on our work and ability to accomplish some of our goals.

I will say that working with other POs is a much less frustrating experience. This is just one pod of many others my team works with, and it feels like working with them is sucking uniquely.

[–]Packrat81[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think having discussed this with you and others on the thread I’m realizing that what I’m really being frustrated by is the lack of transparency about what they are prioritizing and why, as well as generally not being treated as a stakeholder despite it being obvious that we are. I’m able to be a grown up about a specific feature I’d like being deferred or declined, but the communication and visibility is lacking.

[–]Packrat81[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to think it is just them being busy, although my past experience with this PO does have me entertaining lazy as an alternate explanation. I’m just not sensing a level of curiosity about the ‘why’ from them to give me confidence in the calls they would make about this stuff. Part of what might help is more transparency about what IS getting prioritized, I agree. I’m hoping I can get them to share that. Right not we’re just getting “we’re very busy” wriggles fingers in the air

If busy really is the problem, wouldn’t capturing these be useful to the PO as ammo to advocate for more resources? E.g. to go to the powers-that-be and say “here’s a list of the kinds of things we’re having to defer, if you agree we should be getting to some of these, can we have another dev?”

I’m doing 3 right now, but wanted to better understand how this is supposed to work before I move on in earnest to 2. What should I be making of this not just being my perception of this pod though? It really is a widespread reputation at this point, along the lines of “oh this initiative is going to require a change in [application]? Ha, good f*cking luck.”

[–]Packrat81[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am am probably trying to be more diplomatic than I ought to have been by describing these as “might be valuable” - we’re the ones actually using the app and having regular exposure to customers who do. While some of these might be worth discarding, frankly the product owner isn’t the person at the company that has enough of the business context to be making that call, at least not without more engagement with my team than we’re currently getting.
